Winter Wheels & Tyres

the standard N tyres are 235 and they are only on a 8J wheel
 
Winter is coming and I know at the very least that winter tyres don't make sense on 19" wheels, but that's about all I know.

So if anyone give me some tips for choosing 18" wheels & tyres I'd appreciate it. Totally new to having to pick and I'm not really sure what all the numbers mean. :eek:

Yup, have done for last 4-5 years.

Was travelling up country regularly, leaving home at 0445, then heading home 2000-2200, so temps very often below 7°C.

Also, current job takes me on to edge of Dartmoor, so again, low temps and often untreated roads.

Whilst not Scandinavian levels of cold, snow & ice, I grant you, they've got me safely to work on multiple occasions when I'm pretty certain I wouldn't otherwise have made it. And for me... no workee, no payee!

Factor in also the cost of one prang, and the affect of salt on the diamond cut bits of standard alloys...

Each to their own I guess!

you may also check our insurance. In germany they dont pay if you arent using winter wheels.

That's fair enough I don't have a very big commute (I could walk if needed) its more of a pleasure thing for me. Plus I wouldn't have anywhere to store the wheels and the extra cost would hit me.

The extra cost is a bit of a kick initially, but you then save wear on the summer tyres, etc.

Lucky enough to have a basement where I can secrete spares if I do buy them for the i30!
 
Hey Guys,

Has anyone just changed their 19" summer tyres for 19" winter tyres?

I usually just swap tyres on my car, rather than wheels.

I can get some decent winter tyres for around £600, but it looks like I'd be looking at over £1200 for wheels and tyres with tpms.

I don't need to get winter wheel for where I live but I put some old rx8 series 1 rims on. Correct centre bore and et50 with some kuhmo 235 40 18 tires. The wheels are rough but I wont care about gutter rash. I got the rims for $190 for all 4.

Ok, so can someone explain this to me like to a dense person that I am, if I want to buy 18" rims for the manual recommended winter tyres (225/40), what is the implication for differenet ET's than stock ones? is there any recommended margin of greater/smaller ET, so the driving etc is not influenced?
