My i20N

As I live very close to that area (as Snapper knows) I will definately give that route a try as soon as we are blessed with some dry weather!

Here is some more tyre info….

The conclusion here is in line with that of Auto Express, all our favourites are considered excellent but the ‘winner’ is the Pirelli P Zero PZ5. Now the key point is that he reviews the new (8 months ago) PZ5 and lots of places are still selling the previous PZ4… Obviously the i20N comes with a variant of the P Zero - but it won’t be the PZ5 as that hadn’t been released. To further muddy the waters, I do think the standard tyres are fantastic - but only in warm conditions. I picked my car up in high summer and the grip and turn in feel were remarkable. But as soon as the temperature dropped into the low teens the tyre skip on full lock was horrendous and grip plummeted. Unfortunately that kind of poor weather accounts for about six months of the year here in the U.K. and makes this a very challenging tyre to run on a daily basis or even on a ‘hobby’ car. How the PZ5 compares to the stock tyre I don’t know…. (I suspect the stock tyre is simply a 215 width version of the earlier PZ4).

Yeah like you said the stock tyres were great in the hot but we just dont get that enough to warrant running them all the time so for my own laziness the compromise on tyres for better driveability all year round is better

😆, good point - but I am interested in hearing the results when you manage to source a turbo 👍🤗.
I just found that the updated turbo for the i20n comes in three versions. Data from the website are saying that the first stage turbo upgrade, does not need ecu modification while stage 2 and three need to be modified. "

Required conversions

When converting to Stage turbochargers, customization of the software is recommended, and even required for Stage 2 and above. To achieve the maximum power, which the turbocharger provides, we recommend depending on the vehicle and engine a larger Downpipe, possibly also entire exhaust system, a larger intercooler and a modified intake. Recommended for most engines is also to strengthen the engine."

In reality the only parameter you have to make sure its perfect for safety reasons, is the correct af/r, so as not to make the fuel too lean, and skyrocket the temps of the engine. So for stage 2 (280-290 hp) i strongly believe that the combo with the Dtuk box (which runs on the rich side) has many possibilities to work nicely.
Last but not least, they suggest a larger downpipe with an entire exhaust system, so as to lower the EGT temps, and not restrict the power figures.

My car has all those recommended mods, including the larger downpipe (3” diameter).

I have also read the same, or very similar, from turbo suppliers but I have to say I think a lot of what they state is rather speculative rather than based on actual first hand experience of adding a larger turbo to the i20N. What they say in that statement is very generic and applicable to any turbo upgrade situation.

As you say, the danger of increased forced air induction is that the fuel/air mix will be too lean without some sort of ECU intervention. If the DTUK box is able to achieve this then it may make adding a hybrid turbo much more accessible for many 👍. I look forward to your further findings 👍.

Yesterday I was pulling into a parking space at exactly the same time as a lady was pulling into the opposite space - it was as if we were synchronised 😆. Anyway, we got out of our cars and the very nice middle aged lady immediately set about telling me how nice my car was and even praised the ‘throaty’ sound it made! Obviously I was pleased, but also somewhat astonished - normally it’s just teenage boys who like my car 🥴🤣

I’m home - all done and running well. The only problem was the shocking weather and driving rain that persisted all day so I really haven’t had a chance to explore the performance. What I can show is the dyno results of my previous stage 2 tune and the new turbo and stage 3 tune:

View attachment 27265

The blue line is my previous CS stage 2 tune and a very respectable 255 bhp. The red line is the new turbo and tune and the final result is 298 bhp. Do you think we can call this 300 or is that too much of a reach?

I‘m now hoping for better weather so I can thrash this little beastie and stretch its legs a little 👍🤗.

No, sorry mate - weather has just been so poor and the few days it’s been okay I’ve had other stuff to do.

Not had much chance to test them but just from the journeys that I have done 1 much more comfortable on bumpy surfaces (all surfaces) 2 totally cured the side ways noise at low speed corners which had become very loud and uncomfortable ( when coming out of my garage and for quite a few corners every time I used the car Ackerman effect

Also having to be a little more careful as l recently suffered a very large bilateral Pulmonary Embolism and possibly an heart attack

Blimey mate. Very sorry to hear that. Sending all my best to you.
Makes us appreciate that having a great car is only ever secondary to the really important things in life.
Thanks for the response about the tyres. Appreciated.
Also, good news that you are happy with them so far.

Blimey mate, I’m very sorry to hear all of that! Please take it easy and be kind to yourself.

Regarding your 0-60 question, well looking at similarly powered, front wheel drive, hot hatches it would suggest that something like 5.2 seconds might be possible.

0-60 is not a proper measurement for such a powerfull car. Better 100-200 km.
I don’t disagree but there are a couple of problems with doing such a test. The first is that 200 KMH is about 124 MPH so way above the legal limit on any U.K. road (that being 70) and the second is that, even if one wanted to break the speed limit, congestion is so bad that such a run is difficult to achieve!

Thats why in Greece we do such a test after midnight :)

So here are a couple of bits I’ve just seen being sold on AliExpress:

The first is the wing that we all have - this seems to be a 1:1 copy so not much use to existing owners but probably of much more interest to N Line owners as originals are very hard to come by.

This second is three options of carbon fibre bonnet - one with a single central vent, one with dual rows of side vents and one with no vents (like the original).
