i20N - Reviews, General Discussion & Info

Decent balanced review in my opinion.

So which am I getting to replace my I30N?

Gone for the Polo GTI. As I need an auto for a couple of years, waiting on an op on my left knee (so you can imagine what the NHS waiting list is like!)). Not as hard core as either the Fist or the I20N but still a half decent steer. It should have hopefully been built in South Africa last week. Did think about another I30N with DSG, but sadly out of my price range now!!

They aren't wrong - as a pure driving machine, yeah the FiST is the better car, but as a full time ownership proposition the Hyundai trumps it (and the VW) in so many metrics it's hard to argue against it - cheaper to buy, cheaper to run, best warranty, stronger residuals, most practical, most standard equipment, best noise. It literally ticks every box needed for a genuinely usable daily family car that can also monster a B-road or track day.

But, the very fact a Fiesta ST can be pushing 28K and a Polo GTI 30K is criminal... that was Focus ST/Golf GTI money only 1 generation ago!

Yep, agree entirely.

The Polo GTI is pretty much costing me what the I30N cost me 2+ years ago! Luckily I got in before this years price rise and also managed to get a half decent discount (at least by current standards). Plus I've been "guaranteed" a cracking trade in on the I30N (which is mint / low miles). If they offered an auto box in the I20N, then I would have jumped at it.

Prices for new cars are only going one way. What with increasing cost of energy and transport. I wonder how much the cost of shipping a car from South Africa to the UK has jumped in price?

PS. The only thing that I'm surprised at, is Hyundai has not yet bumped the cost of the I20N up! Probably will come sometime soon me thinks.

To be fair, they essentially have by scrapping the deposit contribution - £1500 (+the added interest) isn't a small chunk of change and definitely made a big difference to my purchase decision.

But yeah, you're right - considering where the only real competition is, pricing wise, it does look like a bargain in comparison and I suspect it's only because Hyundai are producing them in such small volumes and the order/waiting list is so long that they haven't already added a grand or 2 to the RRP!

Exactly and I'm sure they put the price up by £500 only a couple of months ago didnt they? As you say if they were able to churn tons of them out then they would probably put the price up! But at the moment i20n's are as rare as magical unicorns!

Fantastic torture test review. Don't like the look of the oil drain contents, but hey - I've seen worse 😅

And now for a completely different subject, is it possible to disable the engine stop/start function?
I just push the button on the dashboard every time I start the car. It soon becomes an automatic reflex to push the button. I also do the same with the rev matching button so it’s on in Normal mode even if you switch back from N mode or one of the Custom modes.

Same here and not only on this car. I think it's deliberately not meant to be permanently turned off. I just manually do it every time. Actually so far (at about 18000 km) I have not yet have it activate (stop the engine) :)

Ok that's great, same as our Ateca. But I leave rev matching permanently active on my 370Z.

Does anybody know if, when customizing the n button on the steering wheel, it is possible to change the graphics of the dials? (Standard, sport and N)

I've still not found an N to match what I want to pay (some dealers taking the p*** with ramped up prices) and the spec. As for the clutch, is this an issue? I can't recall the clutch bite point being an issue in the one I test drove.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with the clutch whether you are crawling along in heavy traffic or blasting along country lanes changing the gears fast and frequently. I drive the i20N and 2 other cars (VW & Skoda) regularly and find them all equally good and easy to use without even thinkin.

Same. No different from other manuals I drive or have driven.

No it's not a problem, compared to my previous cars I still found it special the first few weeks. Have since gotten used to it or it is gone. In any case, no flaw.

I believe they gonna push up the price now in 2023, they have to.

Here in Spain they selling them between 27-28k. If you give an old car you can get it for 26400.
