My i20N

My recent experience of the brake wear sensors.

On the i20N there are two brake wear sensors. One is on the drivers side front wheel and the other on the drivers side rear wheel. They are built into the inner pads and are of the sensor wire type.

However, I have Brembo calipers on the front of my car so the standard pads will not fit. The last couple of weeks I’ve found that every time I go into N mode a warning sounds and a message comes on the dash warning me to check my brake pads for wear before track driving! After some investigation I’ve found the front wear sensor has been cut off. I stripped off some insulation and tightly twisted the wires and wrapped in electrical tape - now there is no more warning. I’m soon replacing the discs and pads so this only has to be a temporary fix.
The electric wear sensor is overkill in my opinion, even race pads have the metallic protusion that will start making a sound when the pad is almost dead. If finding a pad with the hole to fit the wear sensor is limiting your choice I would just short-circuit the wires. Especially if you pay attention to the brakes regularly

I’ve actually bought the replacement pads already and they do have an electrical wear sensor - but in their particular case they are embedded in the pad so captive wires come out of the pad. I think I’m going to have to swop over the connector but that’s easy to do.

I‘ve changed out my gear knob for my alternative one. This one I’ve filled and sprayed the silver top trim ring and also wrapped the blue stripe in a metallic grey to match my cars paint. It feels surprisingly different in that, despite the two being the same diameter, the new ones feels considerably smaller than the carbon fibre one.
This gear knob came from AliExpress and I suspect it’s a fake - but it’s really an astonishingly good quality one. In fact there is only one giveaway that it may not be genuine and that is the way the shift pattern and N logo are printed on the back of the clear plastic dome on the top. It’s not the quality of the printing, it’s the clear plastic dome. On the original this is flat backed and so the dome acts as a convex lens and magnifies the printed image that is on the back. The fake has a curve on both sides of the lens and so the printed image is not magnified and appears flatter. Other than that the two are extremely close. Real perforated leather is used and the parts all fit together in the same way with all the same location pins.

Yesterday I had a play on a ‘power by tonne’ calculator. The big advantage of the i20N is its low weight and this is one of the main reasons I bought one over other options. So, when I typed in the weight of an i30N and it’s standard power I found my car (at 255 BHP) had a better power to weight ratio and almost exactly the same as a Golf R with 325 BHP! 300kg of extra weight makes a huge difference.

Watching the i20n keeping up with the i30n on track was what made me decide on the i20n and like you said power to weight my car is now faster than my old Mazda 3 MPS with its 256bhp and barge weight 😅

Yeah, I'd like to do that mod also, but not much point until someone local gets their act together with a proper tune.

Well I’ve paid the deposit so by the end of September the upgrade should be complete. My i20N will then have a power to weight ratio better than the newest Golf R and the Civic R! Hopefully nothing will go bang….

I’ve spoken with Jon at Courtenay Sport and there are three other customer cars booked in for this turbo mod before mine is done, so we should get a bit of feedback before mine is worked on. However, as mine is booked in for September 23rd (and 24th) there won’t be a great deal of depth to this feedback as all work will be very recent.
On another note, in a weeks time my car goes in for its third service and also its first MOT.

Edit: It is now also booked in for the fuel pump replacement that is the subject of the recent recall.

I’ve been playing with my sticker cutter again 🤓. You may have seen that some i20N owners have blacked out the front bumper area around the fog lights, so I thought I would have a go. As far as I know, everyone who has done this have either cut the vinyl wrap on the car or used knifeless tape. I’ve tried using knifeless tape and it didn't work at all for me so I thought that, ideally, I could cut a sticker thats the exact correct shape and just stick it on with no further cutting needed. So I took a couple of pictures and started making a paper template. I then copied this template into some CAD software I have (much easier said than done). Three templates later I had it cracked and I couldn’t be more pleased with the accuracy of this sticker!

I don’t know if I posted this before, but in honour of the Courtenay Sport stage 2 tune I did this 255 sticker for the back. Of course I’ll have to change this soon when I go stage 3….

I have now done the lower bumper section - this one was a pain to template. What do you think?

Took my car into my local Hyundai dealer today for its third year service, its first MOT and for the fuel pump replacement.
First I had a call to say the sun strip fitted to the inside of the windscreen would fail the MOT (something like 10mm too deep!) - so I had to authorise them to remove that.
Second, I had a call telling me it was strongly recommended I had the aircon regassed (£110.00).
Third, at 5:00pm when I was driving back to the dealership to pick up the car, I had a call to say it was failing the MOT emissions test - badly! I told them to let it come up to temperature and they said they would see what they could do.
Thankfully, when I arrived (after battling Sheffields rush hour traffic) it had passed its MOT! All in it’s been quite a stressful day!
