My i20N

I don't want to start a new discussion, but would a turbo upgrade offer much with the current limitations on the ECU?
Never mind, how much does this cost? Do you send your old turbo in exchange? (Turbo upgrade is still on my list! :D)

I’ll have to get back to you on the torque but the Bhp is just over 300.

This turbo is exclusive to Courtenay Sport and they are able to tune the ECU to work with it - I already have their stage 2 tune (255 bhp). This is the stock turbo that has been machined and uprated. They take your old turbo and you pay £2K - they install the new one and tune the car.

I'm gonna be going this route once appropriate tunes become available down here. Hoping it won't be long.

That sounds amazing keep us updated please, by the way getting my I20 N back this coming week (from the Insurance after that crash ) I cannot wait to start driving a real car again, stuck with an Audi Q2 one litre lol but at least it’s a manual ( had some Mazda SUV that was auto) When you leave the country for holidays you have to give them back until you return

Courtenay got 416nm on their own development car but I suspect you will be limited to how much the rods can take. Will be interesting to see what the Car Jackals can get out of their fully strengthened internals.

I think Courtenay intentionally limit torque even on my current ‘stage 2’ tune. This seems an excellent decision as it makes life easier for the clutch, gearbox and engine - even taking these mechanical considerations out of the equation there is a very finite amount of grip available from a light weight front engine car and I can already overcome that grip quite easily even now!

Car Audio Day Today

When I ordered my car I intentionally did so without the Bose option as I knew I would be fitting an aftermarket system - and so I did. I had a Hertz and Audison component system installed and this has true active operation with all the crossovers handled by DSP (digital signal precessing). This kind of system allows vast levels of adjustment and calibration via a laptop. Recently, my erstwhile friend Dave and I have been playing with all those settings with the intention of improving on the tune done by the installers. Now I should point out that both of us are long time experienced with this kind of audio DIY so we aren’t starting entirely from scratch. One thing we have discovered is that the system installer hadn’t set any time alignment for the drive units. To explain, to get proper stereo focus you need the sound from all the speakers to reach you at the same time. But, obviously, in a car all the the speakers are at wildly different distances from the driver and so you delay the signal from the closer speakers so that it arrives at the same time as sound from the furthest speaker. One thing you need to achieve all this is a measuring microphone - thankfully we already had one of those (Dave built it years ago).
Anyway, so far the results are very promising and the sound is much more focussed. Weather permitting we are going to have another go tomorrow.….

So, we have had more than one more go at ‘tuning’ the DSP of my car audio and I must say Dave has worked wonders. Still a few unresolved issues though - in particular the phase seems to flip-flop weirdly at different frequencies and we think this is the result of pre-programmed all-pass filters in the head unit.

In more pressing news, tomorrow is the day my car gets the turbo uprated by Courtenay Sport - and this means heading out about 4:30am in the morning! Obviously I’ll post as things develop.

All has gone well (so far at least). The long journey to Courtenay Sport went without a hitch and the car arrived safely and on time. What CS do is to remove the old turbo and replace it. The old one gets reconditioned and entirely rebuilt for a future customer. Here is a picture of the actual turbo that is being fitted to my car:

I’m currently at a very nice local hotel and CS are hard at work changing the turbo, changing the oil and running their dyno…. More updates to follow….
