Issues with 5th/6th gear (and 1st/2nd)

Update on the forge shifter for anyone who maybe interested. After setting the gap on both cables to 1.8mm I found the change was sticky going from 5th to 4th gear, it didn't slot over to the 3rd/4th gear plane cleanly, I was getting frustrated now and decided to get stuck in and really look at the issue, ever since I installed the short shifter the changes, although shorter were not smooth in acion and felt notchy and lacking in feel, if you know what I mean.

I studied the workshop manual and finally worked out the adjustment method, there are two ways to achieve this, one involves removing the floor console completely and using an U shaped piece of steel with one of the U legs being much shorter than the other. It needs to be about 4.5mm diameter, you put the gearbox in 4th gear, the tool then slides into holes in the shifter mechanism to lock the shifter and selector actuators in position. Once done head over to the gearbox end and release the cables from the box, slide the spring down the cable and pop out the pink clip leaving the cable adjustment completely loose, (easier to do if you press on the reverse side of the pink clip with a finger to release it) then just pop them onto their pins and press the pink clip in, slide the spring back over and job done.
The PDF shows the U shaped adjusment tool, in section 7 of the PDF.

The way I did it was to pop off the gear lever gaiter and use a 4.5mm drill bit to lock the lever into 4th gear position, I've attached a couple of pics to show what I mean. Then do the same procedure explained above with the cable end adjustment. The cable tie around the drill bit is in case I drop it.

The idea is that with the gearbox in 4th and the lever locked into 4th position the cables should be adjusted so the they drop onto the linkage without effort and then are locked into position.

I've now removed the forge shifter and reverted to the OEM linkage and the change has never been sweeter, the drill bit method takes minutes to do once you've exposed the gearbox cable ends by removing the battery, ECU and battery tray.

So you aren't bothering with the Forge kit now?

No, I've spent the last week or so thinking about how to get the forge shifter working to my liking and yesterday I thought f**k it, it was only an experiment on my part to see if the reduction in movement suited me, it didn't. The change never felt as nice as the original as far as slickness and feel went.
It required less movement but at the expense of loss of feel and notchiness.

Dumb question alert!

Would somebody just sitting in car selecting 4th gear and just holding it there do the same thing as locking it with the drill bit? Or would there be too much slack still?

errrm.......asking for a friend ;)

The gear lever will probably move once the cables are off the gearbox, it took me about 5mins to pop off the gaiter and put the drill bit in, it can't move then.

I forgot to mention, i will sell the short shifter kit on eBay unless anyone here is interested.
How much for the shifter? Depends on shipping cost for the USA as it might make more sense to just buy new for more than 100 but worth a shot right?

Ok so 1-2nd and 5-6th gears didnt work properly with my car when changing gears. About 2 months ago phoned to dealer and said i had problems with 2nd, 5th and 6th gears going in smoothly everytime. They said they will ask about the problem with hyundai. Then the dealer wanted to test drive it so they could diagnose the problem. They had the same problems i had complained about and they ordered new syncros etc for the gearbox. Let see if it will get fixed after the maintenance booked next month. Now i will get my first test of how good the guarantee truly is. Will post more after the fix is done.
So now i got the car back from the dealer and everything seems to be good the 1st - 2nd and 5th - 6th gears moves slick and nicely. Huge difference to what it was before. 3rd and 4th gears are the same as before and funny how those definetly feel slugish compared to the ones that got syncros changed.
Overall im happy with the result and cant wait for summer and fun driving.

Does your car fall into the range outlined in the service bulletin on page 4 of this forum? What year is your car?
 
Dont know what you mean about service bulletin vin range? English is my 3rd language so not sure what do you want to know? 🧐
Look at page 4 in this thread, read the bulletin on that page, it lists affected cars by chassis number. Is your car in that range of numbers.

No its not in the range
Edit. The last digits are but the first part of the vin is not the same.

So it appears to be in the range of affected cars, you can check the serial number on the transmission to be certain. It's visible from the engine bay looking down from just inside the battery, from that position it's upside down.
