Issues with 5th/6th gear (and 1st/2nd)

You're lucky, I've only ever got an i10 with about 50bhp from my dealer when my car went in twice for alarm issues!!

When it came to 1st service time I didn't even bother asking for a car, just got them to drive me to/from work instead 😆

UPDATE:
Got the car back today, went to pick it up after work. The i20 did the job for 2 days. Car feels good on the initial drive, gear changes are also more fluid or smooth i would say. They said the cables were calibrated correctly so only the gearbox had a minor surgery. Attaching what was changed bellow on the pic ✌ 😁 Also hope this is the end of the gearbox issues

They replaced an awful lot of parts, 3/4 gears, shift forks, 5/6 gears, synchro rings, the works.
Hope it fixes it permanently for you.
I know i remember the first time the list was maybe 4-5 parts long now i was like holy shit this would have been expensive if i had to pay for it. Thank god for warranty 😁

I have my i30N since almost a week and also noticed the issue with shifting from 5th to 6th gear. I will monitor it for a little bit and if it does not go away, contact my nearest dealer.
My car is from Feb 2020.

My FastBack N has already been one week in for 1st service and reported 6th gear had issue shifting into gear and Hyundai had confirmed the issue is in fact true and they offer to replace the WHOLE transmission gear-box (will take 6-7 weeks due to shipment from S-Korea to Melbourne. Plus the squeaky noise from steering column I've informed the dealer 3 times still remains outstanding. Other issues not so important but will definitely annoy you are excessive noise from wipers and front right body fender misalignment (which they also agrees to take in a body penal shop for repair). All in all, I may not see my car in 7-8 weeks.

I love my FastBack N but I'm beginning to feel whether I have made the right decision, Just an unpleasant purchase with Hyundai 1st time.

Must admit that after being more than a bit unhappy with the gear change in my I30N to start with, it appeared to be loosening up as the miles piled on.

Unluckily... it appears to have pretty much regressed back to what it was originally. IE. CRAP
WTF... just can't understand this!

First gear difficult to engage (needing to pull it back into 2nd gear first). 1st to 2nd can also be a nightmare, requiring a HUGE yank to get it in. Come to that, non of the other gear changes are that great (5th to 6th probably being the worst).

Totally inconsistent though, sometimes when warmed up, it's not too bad. But other times, even warmed up, it's terrible.

No way at the moment though can I afford to manage without a car (live in a very rural area with little to no public transport). Plus already spoken to the garage and no way (COVID19 and all that) are they allowing a loan car. So no real option but to leave it a couple more months and see how it goes.

And to those out there that have implied that there are no real issues here and it's a new car and needs to loosen up more. I say RUBBISH. I've bought countless new cars over more than 40 years of motoring and never ever encountered problems like this.

Shame really, as it's a nice car to drive, just somewhat tarnished in my case by this issue.

Try the cable adjustment first, it's in the how to section. I reckon the cables stretch as they settle in, takes about 45 mins to do.

Sounds like it might be going down the same path as my fastback gearbox replacement,, dealer provide standard auto i30 loan car and rather filthy inside spending 1/2hr with disinfect wipes every time they provide the car. It is terrible felling stepping back from being Audi and Mercedes owner. Hyundai still got a long way when it comes to service deliveries.

To somewhat extend, if my a brand new car is away for 2 months for major defects fixing, the owner should be compensated in some way. We bought the N because we wanted to drive the crazy bang every day, not having access to the N and proving you with a dirty vanilla drive i30 just makes the whole Hyundai experience worse.

My car also has the same issue with 6th gear. I have an appointment with the dealer scheduled for tomorrow. I have a list of minor issues to be reported but this 6th gear thing is really hard to replicate.

I've read last 10 pages of this topic and it seems that no one can replicate it on demand. Has any one got any suggestion in which conditions this issue happens the most?

My car is from april 2020 with 4,5k km driven. I experienced this issue after first 1000 km. Once it happened during hard accceleration and my hand slipped into 4 but fortunately I did not engaged clutch cos I felt that something is wrong.

What i found out over the time i was driving and i had the issue is, low RPMs either 4th into 5th or 5th into 6th and i was in Custom mode almost all the time. I think it never happened when i was in Normal and driving slowly, maybe it would be heavy to ingage into 5/6th but it would go in. Also almost everytime the car was driven normaly, so 1/4 of throttle or so and driving like a normal driver on the road. I never got the issue while going fast in the car. Hope that helps. I described it like this to my dealer, and somehow idk if they replicated the issue while driving because 1 technician did go for a short drive and i think he was ingaging 5/6th many times to see if he can get it to repeat, and they said he repeated the issue and then we ordered parts which u can see abit back in the thread when i posted what was changed. Right now im clear of the issue but only time will tell ✌

Mine's going in for replacement of the 5th and 6th gears next week after reporting issues with it at the previous services. The mechanic who took it for the test drive confirmed it.

I've just got back my Fastback-N 2 days ago with a completely new gear-box replaced !! Must say.... quite a big difference compare with the original gear-box with 6th gear issues. The dealer also restarted the warranty from the date with the new gearbox installed. The N drives so smooth now , every gear is so precise . Loving it !!

This gearbox thing is a weird one, how can some cars be affected and others like mine have a knife through butter one especially with the same manufacturing process and parts, usually if a car has a fundamental problem it is found in all cars not just some of them also wasn't the problem supposed to be fixed for cars after a certain build date yet some owners are still having problems with later cars, would be interested to know what percentage wise of total cars sold are problematic.

At first i thought it was just the first half a year of sales or so but now i see people with Fastback N's have it aswell so idk, maybe there was a batch of trasmissions that was made at a certain date or something like that and they had stock of them... 🤷‍♂️ 🤷‍♂️

Or another idea is that maybe they make transmission in 2-3 different areas, where as 1 of the 2-3 is the one making faulty ones... All i know is, if the recent replacement of parts they put into my transmission will turn in the same result i will request nothing less than a new transmission...It's the only thing that makes me irritated :/
