Issues with 5th/6th gear (and 1st/2nd)

At first i thought it was just the first half a year of sales or so but now i see people with Fastback N's have it aswell so idk, maybe there was a batch of trasmissions that was made at a certain date or something like that and they had stock of them... 🤷‍♂️ 🤷‍♂️
Pretty daft to fit parts that have had a history of problems especially as this seems to be still an ongoing problem, like I said it's very strange how some cars are affected and not others.

Mine's been notchy (about 50% of the time) going into 6th since I got it. Every other gear is fine; it goes in with a little bit more pressure; and I'm never in a rush to select 6th so I'm leaving it to see if it loosens up (now on 1,400 miles). If it's still doing it in November, I'll ask them to sort it out at the first service. I got the car brand new in November 2019.

Hope this doesn't seem a daft question but do you attempt to select 6th with the gearstick as far over to the right as it will go holding it over and straight down? as it is spring loaded and has a tendency to find the centre i.e. go left a bit. if you just let it loosely come out of 5th without holding it over to the right try that and let me know how you get on.

Is specifically gets stuck while keeping a bit of pressure to the right. I actually manage to get it in 6th more often, by letting it drift a hair to the left

I find that 1st to second can sometimes be better if you put slight pressure to the left, thought it might work in reverse for 5th to 6th oh! Well.

Not a daft question. :)

The rest of the gears go in so easily that I often forget that 6th is sometimes a problem until I get there. I've tried all kinds of different ways; the only one that seems to make a difference is going back up to the middle of the gate and then coming back down to 6th with more pressure compared to that required for other gears.

I'll try what you suggested and let you know.

I think you could be onto something here. I tried 5th to 6th as I normally would (with the expected outcome, i.e. intermittent notchiness/resistance). I then tried it again the way you suggested. Pushing it slightly to the right while moving across the gate resulted in a much smoother shift without any notchiness. I tried it several times in succession just to check. The result was the same every time.

Thanks very much. :)

Reporting updates after 3 weeks on my replacement gearbox due to 6th gear issue, shifting every gears are sharp and spot on, particular 6th gear which completely eliminated the issue I had from day 1 receiving the N. I have also find the feel in each gear is better then the old gear box, quite noticeable. I'm sure anyone purchased the N would know how to shift gears properly, if you are in doubt, get your dealer to check it out like i did and you may be surprise your concern was in fact a real issue.

Cheers,

Hi all, I've noticed this issue since i got the car, but last time i checked i swear my care was not within the affected VIN range.

My car is a JUL18 build with VIN ending in J0056**

I asked my local dealership to look at this issue 18+ months ago and they couldnt find any issue, i'm not convinced they checked for the TSB. Does anyone know if they haev to fault the car before they will fix it, even when there is an active TSB?

It is written as, if the customer complains on the issue 5/6th have to be changed.

But that only refers to the vehicles in the affected VIN range as far as I understand.
Hmm ye of that im not sure. Either way if the take it for a drive and the issue happens they still have to replace it under warranty...

Thanks guys, just slightly confused because my VIN is a slightly different format, TMAHC51ALJJ0056**

Does anyone know how to confirm the transmission number?

You can see it by looking at the top of the gearbox, get a torch and shine it between the battery and the engine looking directly down.

Mine was more than a bit notchy when new and engaging 1st gear very difficult at times . Now after only some 700 miles it's starting to loosen up nicely. When warm, I would say it's pretty good now. I was initially a bit concerned but other forum members said "give it some time" and they were right :)

Same here. 1st and 2nd were much better after 3000km.

Last week car went to dealer for fix 5th&6th issue. After that 5th&6th much better, but 1st and 2nd bit notchy again? What happened?🤔

While mine has continued to improve with age. Like a lot of people I've not been doing much mileage this year due to the Covid situation, so only done some 4.5k miles so far. It's now just 2nd gear now that can sometimes (not consistent even when warm) that can still catch me out and needs an extra yank to get it in. I'll give it a few more miles and see how it goes. Due its first service next January. SO I'll review the situation when the time comes to book it in.

Besides that, the car has been great. Things I'd change if I had been on the design team though. But that's just personal choice as to how I would have set the car up. Be more than interested to have a test drive in the updated model when it comes out.

PS. Question. Do you know what they did to sort 5/6th gear? If it was just adjusting the gear linkage. then might they possibly have sorted one thing, but knocked another one out? Only guessing here, I'm no mechanic.

Well I think the gearbox is not good even people keep saying it. I have read and heard so many who have been left with the problem the few first gears are not working and dealer or hyundai say it working properly. 20k behind and not really happy with the car anymore.
