Exhaust- / Sound Discussion

I can't say much about the pops and bangs, because I don't do them every day. What I've noticed (or what I thought) when Ambient temperature is above 31 degrees, the exhaust sounds a bit louder. Below it's only loud. But no difference when engine / oil on 90 degrees. Except it's really cold outside.

Well, the exhaust sound when accelerating is really loud in Sport and Sport+, but I can´t say if it is louder with higher ambient temperature. Will listen to it closer.

I´ll check the bubble in Sport mode today.

Sounds like someone has their A/C fan turned up a notch or two. ;)

The ECM uses various temperature sensors to base nearly all calculations and adjustments from. Once the engine is at operating temperature, ambient temperature affecting the amount of fuel injected or timing retardation for exhibiting crackles is practically nil. I reckon it is possible that high ambient temperature could cause other fluid temperatures to surpass certain thresholds in certain maps, which could cause more fuel to be injected. Mostly theoretical until ECM access is achieved.

You could get a portable dB meter and do some testing if you prefer.

...

With 38 degrees ambient temperature it actually might be a bit more than that ;).

I set the temperature to 20 degrees, cuz I hate heat and the fan´s seem to be working full speed most of the time.
Maybe it´s just the fan noise that makes me feel the bang´s are quieter.

That's something I can't talk about. My car sounds except of 2 times (both times with my mechanic) exactly the same in normal and sport. When accelerating and hitting the throttle more than 50%, my car gets quieter than below. The loudest and best sounding things for all day Uses is custom with exhaust sport+ and engine normal for me. When I push @2000rpm to 2300 and release the pedal a bit, the car sounds brutal.

I know that hot air can´t be compressed as good as cold air, but is that something that would influence the exhaust sound, as the bang´s are generated by igniting nebulized fuel?
Technically, I think you have that the wrong way around. Cold air is denser and so cannot be compressed as much as hot air which starts off less dense. The turbocharger is driven by the exhaust and so its speed is determined by exhaust gas flow. The incoming air is compressed a certain amount, which is independent of ambient temperature. I would expect cool air to be compressed and able to ignite more fuel than warm air. How that is accounted for in the map will be a secret.
A very complex area of thermodynamics.

Yeah, you are right.

It's about the volume of the air, and as cold air is denser you can have a bigger amount (mass) of air in the combustion chamber.

@padigree

In Sport I have this nice bubbling (blubbern) if I lift the throttle.

In Sport+ you get the bangs when reving high enough.

Normal seems to be a good amount quieter then Sport.

But also if the air is less dense then there is less resistance to the turbocharger so it spins faster. And of course if you're activating the dump valve then it doesn't care what the intake density or temperature are, it activates at a certain boost pressure, so the charge pressure is unvaried by those other parameters. o_O

Today is the first cooler day since I had the car and the bangs are at least as loud as on a hot day but the burbles and pops are much louder now. Waiting at the dealer atm for an 'after run in peace of mind' oil change :)

Got 5-6 pops on the trott from first to second and second to third yesterday and it was 34 °c. Machine gun fire! Sounds great through the woods haha

Seems like it was me being paranoid.

Had the chance to drive around a bit in different ambient temps and everything was fine.

The pops and crackles are not there when you are at full throttle and under full load (e. driving up a mountain road) ... lower fuel density at higher temperatures may cause this to occur sooner ...

I noticed it after the 10k oil change in N-Mode and Custom Mode.

Maybe due to the Tucson which I drove for one day instead. You hear nothing but the radio in it:p

My rear muffler will fall a part too but much quicker than the rest of N-s because of aftermarket downpipe and lack of resonator. It is time to visit my exhaust workshop again because I got news that flaps just arrived :) It looks like oem rear box is not a high quality product :(

My car has only 2500km, but I think it makes little noise, and few bangs. Does it improve? Is it normal to be like that with a few km? Or will you have a problem?

Just to be sure. My experience is to get the most bangs/pops and great sound you need to do (at least) two things:

1. Engine-setting in Sport+
2. Exhaust-setting in Sport+

I am getting much less pops when I have everything in Normal except exhaust in Sport+.

Anyone to confirm/support or elaborate these findings?

I am glad someone has noticed this!

We’re on around 6500 miles and my wife’s (who drives the car far more than me) words yesterday when I got in the car were ‘what have you done to the car? The exhausts sounds louder’. And to be fair, it does sound louder. I’m feeling the colder weather MAY affect it but my wifeys not usually spot on with any differences in the car to be fair.

It would be interesting to measure if there is an audible difference? Also, you do hear of certain cars limiting boost or torque for the first x amount of miles so these modern ECU’s are really cool things so I wouldn’t be surprised if these cars make more power now...

I have exactly these settings in Custom mode. It looks like it's fickle, if you pull on the 2 gear, it makes more "bangs", but for example when I pull through 3 gear, it almost never does ...
