Exhaust- / Sound Discussion

My car just past 13000km and the pops and bangs is getting louder. I love it. Soon i will order downpipe with racecat and i belive the pops and bangs will get even louder

I had my first service today (1500km/1mth) and I reported to the dealer when I dropped it off that I felt the exhaust sound wasn't as loud as it should be (or as per the test driven car). The inspection revealed that the in cabin exhaust sound amplifier is not operating. This invoked two responses:
1. relief that my concern was validated and that I wasn't going to be eternally disappointed, and
2. disappointment that there was a fault with the car, and, being advised that it was a three week wait for a master technician to further diagnose and repair the issue.

I'm keen to hear from other owners if they have experienced a similar issue, because I was also advised that Hyundai Australia have no record of this being a systemic problem and I wanted to know if it is, or if it is 'just my luck'.

Any other exhaust faults either? Please feel free to comment because, sans amplification, my exhaust still does not sound as loud as all those youtube videos...

Cheers, AB

YES! HEY :D I don't know if it sounds right to say I'm happy that I'm not the only one with an exhaust problem! :D

I think this is really luck, because such problems are hardly known until now. I have the problem that I only have normal and Sport +. When I put the exhaust on sport, I notice no difference to normal and eco. Of course, the problem has stopped for 5 minutes to exist when I was at my dealer. after 4500km the first time I could hear my car in sport. Until I was off the parking lot again.
A defect of the flap, I can rule out, since it is open at idle and cleanly regulated in N-mode. I honestly do not know what the problem might be. The only thing I could imagine: A software problem. The hardware works. Tomorrow I have my 10,000km service and will address this issue today at the meeting.

I have read a few posts regarding the sound generator but they seemed to indicate that the generator was making an unusual noise and not the sort of noise it was designed to make. You mention yours is not working at all. To be really honest I don't know if mine is working or not. How can you tell?

It would be "simple to tell" if you already heard it one time not working. Another alternative to hear the difference is to make the Windshield noise fix and unplug the generator itself while doing this. That will be my next mod when i got my service tomorrow and maybe get a fixed generator. After it will be a switched generator where I'm able to enjoy the pure exhaust sound..

How can you tell?

Because it sounds boring, it feels disappointing, and the exhaust is noticeably louder with the windows down. If you aren’t experiencing all three then I’d say you’re safe.

I’m going through all the stages of grief and now I’m at anger because I’ve spent a month pussyfooting the car around and not enjoyed any snap crackle or pop... I was under the assumption that I wasn’t hearing the niceties because the car was just being driven underwhelmingly below 3000rpm and now I’ve found out that I have missed out on the advertised fun.

Is it an "exhaust fault"?
I would happily bin my ESG for the truth.
Why don't you just put a recording of a V8 on? If all your fun comes from the ESG why not see if you can get one retrofitted to a 1.0 l and save a heap of fuel cash at the same time?
Sorry that sounds a bit bitter, no offence intended, but I don't get the love for the ESG. Each to their own.

I can see your point @speedking. The "fake" noise seems insincere to some extent. Many modern engines no longer produce a sound that many of us associate with performance engines. This issue is not isolated to road cars however. F1 cars get bad press anytime the regulations reduce the sound of the cars. The Formula E popularity too, seems hampered IMO by the lack of engine noises.
Manufacturers seem to have gone the route of "fake" augmentation to the engine sound as the next best thing to actual howling intakes and exhausts. Welcome to 2018.

For me it just brings a little of the outside inside when it’s too bloody hot or cold to have your windows down (and FYI, it was both too hot and too cold on two consecutive days here in Adelaide).

As for ‘fake’ sound, it’s just an amplification of the actual exhaust so it’s nothing at all similar to ‘playing a recording’ of a V8 in a Daihatsu Charade.

My wife tells me she can hear my car from well down the street when I leave for work in the morning. All I want for is to experience that from within my car.

Finally, if it’s not your cup of tea, it’s pretty easy to disconnect.

All four windows down + N mode engaged + pushing accelerator pedal through the carpet + smashing gears = RSG (Real Sound Generator). All i need....
Just remember it is freezing cold in the northern hemisphere. I am thinking driving around with all four windows down in Germany or Scotland this time of year is like asking for frostbite. A large price to pay for listening to exhaust noises. Territorians only have to worry about wildlife bounding through open windows. ;)

Right you are, and point taken. Guess i take a few things for granted living up here. You know, things like peak hour traffic congestion being rare as a sub-30 degree day with less than 90% humidity and all.

Don't take the NT for granted. I have been to the territory and to Darwin in particular several times and love the place. My wife lived up there for 4 years before we were married. Must get back up there one day.

So if it has worked faultlessly since day one, or has never worked at all, then not so "simple to tell".

The only windshield noise I get is when the wipers are on a too dry screen and they squeal, I can fix that? JK. No noise, so no need to fix something that ain't broke.

In the middle of your windscreens downside.

Take a look @ 2:17

OK, so you take the cover off, and I see what looks like a wire heading up from about the R in Turbo, to past the T, and it is attached to something that obviously is like a speaker in the centre of the dash inside, right at the front, correct?

Can it be removed from there, in order to see if it is working? If I put my finger on it, does it vibrate? If I stick my phone next to it, can I record the sound? Does it only work in some modes, so I can test it? Or is it on all the time, but with different levels?

Can I splice a switch into the line (under the front cover) to be able to manually turn on or off the ICFENSG (in car fake engine noise sound generator)?

Can I swap out the generator for a 6 x 9 speaker and add an amplifier and sub woofer to improve the fake sound? LOL that may be a bit too far (for some).

I am currently buying an I30n performance (68 plate with less than 100 miles) and I have been made aware that the older models have a different exhaust that cracks more than the newer ones. This was said to my Dad ( car salesman at a Hyundai/Vauxhall garage ) whilst he was on a course. Does anyone know why this has changed ?

If this is the case then it’s the fitting of a GPF, gasoline particulate filter. This changed on the newer models, but I think the forum as as whole has gone through this and decided it’s either nothing to worry about or it’s still chuffing loud when it pops.

Mine was picked up in October and it’s nice and noisy enough, burbles through car parks just right and pops under hard acceleration all the time (approx 5k revs)

I don’t think this is the case. There’s lots of good information on the forum regarding the newer builds having a filter to comply with EU regulations on emissions I believe.

I’m sure the exhaust note is still as raucous though but I’ll do some digging.
