i30 N Steering Noise / Creaking

Thanks ialexpw. My local dealership said the same thing being 2020 build, didn’t seem to interested in completing any diagnostics - sounds like I’ll be going down the silicon route aswell

It's supposedly in the Hyundai system, but only for models before ours (mine is also late 2020) so they pretend like it cannot happen.

In the end they offered to take it in for a week and allow the engineer use it as his daily driver to/from work - I didn't really like the sound of that, so used to the silicon spray instead (although it had already stopped after ~1-2 weeks).

I have just had the Michelin PS4's fitted at 25,000 km and feel they are a great tyre as most have reported. When reversing out my driveway with some lock on the steering the car always produced a startling "clunk" as it rolled over the gutter ramp. I came to realise this was most likely one tyre slipping over the concrete ramp and the LSD producing the aforementioned "clunk". The "french" tyres don't seem to have this problem and the clunk I have heard for 2 and a half years has gone it would seem. Maybe it will return once the PS4s wear down a bit.
:cool::)

Hi all, first time post.

I picked up a brand new hatchback (facelift) just last Thursday (12/8) and the creaking and knocking in the steering column started on Saturday (14/8). fast-forward till today (18/8 and 298km on the clock), I dropped it into the service centre this morning and just had a phone call to say its a warranty job of about $12k AUS and a 6-8 week wait for the parts. Ill give an update on the exact details when I pick it up this afternoon for all those interested.

Will be interested to hear more from the update! The noise has come back slightly on my 2020 model as well as a creak in the rear suspension, so I'm looking at booking it back in again soon. See if they will be more interested in it than they were last time.

Update:

after speaking to the mechanic yesterday and service centre manager we have refused to take the car back based on the expected wait time on parts and severity/extent of work that needs to be completed and the estimated time frame involved in rectifying the issue. the repair involves a complete steering rack replacement due to an "insufficient amount of grease being applied to the pinion bearing of the steering rack". At this stage I cannot comment much further as this may result in myself rejecting the vehicle due to a major defect and as a result in either refund or replacement of the vehicle.

also, thanks to everyone who has previously posted about steering rack issues with the older model as that gave myself and indication of what to expect dropping the car off to get diagnosed yesterday.

Have you tried using silicon grease spray at the bottom of the steering column, inside and outside on the rubber grommet?
It's significant that only RH drive cars are affected. I think it's due to the columns proximity to the exhaust.

Crap! I have the same issue with my i30N DCT FL. From about week one the steering start making the knocking/creaking noise which I thought sounded like it was coming from the suspension as it does it when not moving the wheel as well.

I'm booked in next week so the dealer can take a look but I don't want to go through extensive repairs on a brand new Car.

I only just had Tinting done plus a speaker upgrade so how can I get this paid for if they replace the car?

Crap, Crap Crap...

Ermmm.....I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say no flipping chance. Unless you have the dealership of the century looking after you?!

Can't believe they are still coming out the factory like this. Sucks for the FL owners :(

All the affected cars are RH drive. It's the rubber grommet at the bottom of the steering column. Get some good silicon spray and lubricate this from inside and underneath. It takes 5 minutes Max. Cured mine nearly 3 years ago.
Just get underneath and do it.

I had the same issue in my AU spec N DCT, I had it fixed during the first 1 month check/service - it was the steering shaft rubbing on the heat shield, the heat shield was adjusted and its all good now.

Update, It went in today to get the re-greasing etc and has not fixed the problem. they still have the car and will be assessing it further tomorrow to try and determine what the cause is although its looking as though it will be a whole steering rack replacement. @DASNN you made a good point. I might ring them first thing in the morning just to ask if they have checked that as the possible problem, glad to hear yours was a quick fix.

@glennbot have you had your problem resolved yet?

Hello everyone,

Reopening this topic. From the messages I have been reading, I think my issue is a bit different. Whenever I acces my parking, which has a small ramp to go over the side walk, I hear a squeaking noise like if something was bending in the column steer or inside the dashboard (drivers side). It doesn't matter if I acces fromnthe right or the left and doesn't matter if it is in N mode or Normal mode. Any idea what it could be?

My first tip would be one of the suspension components, everything stock there or are you running lowering springs?

As per now, everything stock. Only change in that area is the anti-torque powerflex (i think it is called that way).
