i30 N Steering Noise / Creaking

Mines currently in for this, dropped it at 8:45 this morning and just waiting to hear back as I haven't had an update as of yet (either from them or their web updates). Tried to call and got "our service guys are all on calls, they'll call you back" about 30 minutes ago.

Hopefully will all be sorted tonight so I don't have to keep the courtesy car any longer.

Edit;

Kind of what I expected, they have said they cannot recreate the issue. I told them it was intermittent and it's a known issue to Hyundai, and she said they cannot normally go down that route under warranty if they cannot recreate it themselves first.

I told them that it normally happens when the car is warmed up and slightly twitching the wheel, so they have gone off to try again, but I'm not holding out much hope...

Get a tin of silicon grease and spray at the bottom of the column inside the car and repeat underneath. Did mine nearly two years ago and it's been silent ever since.

Thanks, I think I'll go ahead and do it myself. When I picked it up last night they suggested keeping it for a week where the mechanic can use it as "his car" going to work and back to try and recreate it, although I wasn't too keen on that.

For future reference, the issue which is logged with Hyundai does not cover the latest model (this year) as they checked my VIN and said that it does not apply, even though the issue is still present.

It appears to be only rh drive cars that are affected, too close to the turbo downpipe I think.

Hello guys i've noticed this sound:

I've gone to Hyundai and they told me it's a faulty steering column, they've ordered it and we are awaiting it.

Sound is only present when turning to the right.

Also sorry for the sewage sounds, its in the underground parking lot.

Anyone had this?

Generally, bad the steering column bearing/s, joint assemblies, bad clock spring, a bent shaft. Such a noise can also be from a dry CV joint popping, with the noise transferring thru the steering column. :)

if it not the column itself, after they replace it. I will most definately be a dry CV joint. It can happen when a CV boot cracks and allows water and other debris to enter the boot. Grease is flung out of the opening from centrifugal force and the joint becomes dry causing the pop.

Considering you are sitting still, the; steering column, possibly the CV Joint. If moving, one or both struts are failing.

Had car for a few months, done 2500kms and got this steering wheel noise. They diagnosed it as a known fault and said I needed a new washer and grease and its an all day job. Picked car up yesterday and so far so good, hopefully does not come back and need steering rack replaced etc. Mine only made the noise after driving the car for 10-15 minutes but obviously was not a heat shield problem etc.

So this noise started on my car today. Would you say this is rack?

Ill give it ago tomorrow if it stops raining lol

It's tipping down with rain so wont get much chance today but i have sprayed the top mounts with plenty of wd40 and no noise. I shall raise this at my next service to get them looked at.

New i30n owner here, late 2020 fastback with 2500km on the clock, based in Australia with right hand steering. Is this the type of noise people experienced who had the issue prior to the grease or heat shield fix? My sound appears after 5-10 minutes of driving. Thanks!

Creaky steering i30N fastback 2020

That's the exact noise that I had - when I took it in last year they told me the noise only happened on previous models and couldn't be happening on mine, by the time they would look at it the noise actually stopped on its own so I ended up using some silicon spray as advised in this thread and haven't heard it since.
