Issues with 5th/6th gear (and 1st/2nd)

Mine was more than a bit notchy when new and engaging 1st gear very difficult at times . Now after only some 700 miles it's starting to loosen up nicely. When warm, I would say it's pretty good now. I was initially a bit concerned but other forum members said "give it some time" and they were right :)

The clutch was fine but didn't like that the gears didn't engage smoothly.. Its like I had to force them in, losing revs in the process!! a real shame as would have shopped in the Golf R for it

Is this a common fault reported amongst other owners?

I drove a 2018 model with 6000miles has this been rectified in 2019?

Mine is a 68 plate bought brand new and the gearbox has been faultless, came from a Cupra 280 manual and this is a way better gearbox.

Mines the same can't fault it, strange how some like ours are fine and others on here are having such trouble, you would think if there was a fundamental flaw in the design they would all be the same.

Yeah. My bet is that many of them are not box issues, but rather poorly installed linkages. This is especially the case as several people on here have fitted the forge short shifter etc and suddenly gear issues were resolved.

Or both. My car's linkages decided to fail completely (resulting in terrible shift in all lower row gears) but the synchro issue was there from day 1. Since new linkage installation and replaced 5>6th synchros, it was been flawless to use gearbox wise.

Yeah, I’m not doubting the synchro issue at all. Clearly it’s real or else there wouldn’t be a TSB :)

Just that the part replacers read a TSB, see gear issue and decide rather than diagnose. The fact that it’s fixed could be really due to an actual synchro issue or simply that they adjust the linkages when putting the box back in.

My car is being looked at in a couple of weeks time for an occasional problem with 5th and 6th trouble is it only happens maybe once a week or so.
Any advice on what to ask them to check for as there are so many pages on here to read through

You should not be giving them any advice since they are meant to be clued up on their flagship car model...

That said, there should be a TSB which will tell them to replace 5 to 6th gear synchros. They won't replace the gears themselves though unless they have suffered damage from the above fault.

They did this on mine and has been buttery smooth since.

@Bu11eT wrote in another thread (I think) that the main problem is the way the gear linkings fit. On some cars the length isn't quite right and adjustments need to be made. Can also be done with a short shifter kit.

Yep, had now 3 guys in our group fixing the issue by adjusting the gear linkages. You don't necessarily need the short shifter kit. However I now bought one too, cause why not put it in, if you have to remove battery and ECU anyways to adjust them

Mounted my short shifter yesterday together with a mate.
We observed quite a big tolerance in gear linkage spacing. What I mean by "big"? Well, the gear linkage spacing for horizontal gear lever movement in my mate' N was exactly 1.3mm. In my N it was 1.1mm. We haven't even checked the vertical one yet, as we want to observe the change in shifting gears step by step.

Mine is also really smooth and always has been. Like any gearbox it needs to be warmed up properly.

Had a third guy where we've taken a look at the stock gap. He had a gap of 0.7, and he stated he never had 6th gear issues
