Yeah... but unfortunately the car is on warranty till December and I would prefer not to strip the gearbox. The warranty isn't the "OEM" one, the car is from a Porsche dealership (someone left it here in trade) and I can appeal for this warranty after the gearbox breaks down completely

It is attracted by a magnet. I believe that if it would be part of synchro or something else crucial there would be at least some issues with the gearbox, but there's none 🤔

Only way to be sure is to strip the gearbox

I just test-drove the car and only one thing that is bringing my attention - slowly accelerating in first gear produces humming but I guess every car does that cuz that's first gear. My GFs Citroen does it as well, my previous Abarth was doing that too.

Can you please tell me if your i30N is pretty noisy from the gearbox at 1st gear as well? 🙏

These are a lot better!

One side of it looks like the surface was axial grinding on an other part. It seems to have an other and a inner diameter, so it could be a part of a half-moon ring or synchro-body. It looks like cast material.

But how shure is your mechanic that this was dropped by your gearbox?

You have a six-speed manual?

Yes, six-speed manual and 100% sure that this was in gearbox oil

Worth to add that this could lay in the gearbox oil pan for up to 50k kms, because that was first time ever opened

Do a research on the internal parts of your gearbox, maybe you can puzzle it up. Modern gearboxes have a big magnet inside to prevent more damage, I guess this part was to big to get in contact with that magnet or the Hyundai gearboxes won't have it.

It was on the drain plug magnet actually, I believe that gearbox is pretty healthy, it did at least several thousand kilometers with it inside, no metal sheddings in the oil, little bit on the drain plug - normal amount I would say.

I'm not sure what should I do with it, from my understanding something broke but it can't be a critical part because the gearbox still works perfectly. Sad that my warranty covers it only when it breaks down completely :/

I haven't any knowledge about that Hyundai gearboxes, but the decision for sure is hard.

If there never was an event with very harsh shifting, noise or rumble once and it still seems to work perfectly, you could only change the gear oil from now on frequently every 10-15k kms and keep an eye on it and live with it.

A gearbox revision should be necessary anyway in the next 100-150k kms

Update: I was just on phone with really good gearbox specialist, I've only managed to say that's my car is i30N and i found metal in oil pan and the guy already told me that it's probably "round" on the outside and that's one of three synchro locks either on 5th or 6th gear. Gearbox will work just fine as there are 2 other locks on every synchro, very common failure, cause of most 5 and 6 gears issues. He said that it happens fairly often but magnet inside the gearbox is usually catching the pieces so owners doesn't even know about the failure.

He said that I can drive with it, it may hold up for another 100k kms or so, if it'll fail, gearbox will simply "grind" while putting damaged gear.

I'm gonna probably fix it, he proposed replacing four synchros on 3-6 gears for improved ones. 1-2 day of work and quoted 2000 PLN / 400 GBP / 480 EUR, so fairly cheap.

As I am always interested even if i30N problems won't belong to me directly. I tried to find synchro ring pictures of the i30N gearbox, and found a very interesting video.

It is very bad to see that Hyundai have used multiple bearings which work with plastic cages. I would advise to change all these bearings to metal cages ones, it is very simple to tell that problems which are yet known with the diff bearings also up to that plastic ones.

I really wonder how a manufacturer is able to build a huge massive gearbox and then using plastic caged bearings instead of metal ones. Probably 10-20€ more expensive per car.

Hi All,
has anybody ever had issues putting the car into 1st gear? It started like a month ago and does this like 1 in a 100 but still fairly annoying. I really have to play with the clutch before it lets me put it into 1st gear. Its a 2018 pfl hatch with 172k kms.
I don't have any info when the gearbox oil was changed.
