The gear engages about half way. So when you then release the clutch you can really really hear the grinding, obviously. So I am not entirely sure. I'll just give the dealer a try, it's my first visit so I am not sure how good they really are...
Ahh I've never lifted the clutch when the gear hasn't fully engaged. But the way a synchro operates I'd expect to hear a noise of some sort when moving the gear lever even with the clutch depressed. Show them this topic, there's no reason for them not to do the repairs. I even pushed it that far that they printed out my maintenance history to give me some sort of paperwork to keep. You never know if the first N becomes as legendary as a first generation Golf and buyers in 15 years want to know what has been changed on the car ;-).I took my car to Hyundai for a service and told them my 6th gear sticks they reported back nothing wrong with 6th gear then out driving and guess what 6th gear sticks all the bloody time. Hyundai stance on this matter as far as I am concerned is I am imagining 6th gear is sticking when it bloody well is sticking to high heaven going to take it back and demand they look at it.
Yeah 5th feels sooo much smoother. 6th doesn't feel any different besides it's not getting stuck anymore.Just had my synchro rings for 5th and 6th replaced. 5th is a lot lot better now, not convinced 6th is any better but only done about 60 miles with the new synchros so maybe a bit too early to say.

It does sound like you have a more serious issue. Mine was a bit stiff going into 6th until the car loosened up but the gear change has always been very crisp - the car is renowned for having a great gear change (latest Type R is better though I've read). My gearbox is a joy to use especially when hammering through the gears on track so the fact yours is so notchy in 6th and doesn't feel that great suggests you have an issue.Hi everyone, glad I found this thread and forum from a Google search!

What I do is change back to 5th and then to 6th, or into neutral, let the clutch out, put the clutch back in, and then change to 6th.
Some days it doesn't happen at all, other days it might be once, other days it can happen several times.
I bought the car ex-demo with 1500 miles on it so I'm a bit narked to see this appears to be a well known fault! (I've put over 2000 miles on it since then and the problem doesn't seem to be getting any better or worse.)
It's at the point now where I feel a bit nervous about my first change into 6th each day, as that's when it's most likely to happen. (When driving the car a bit harder and/or when it's been driven a few miles, it doesn't seem to happen as much.)
TBH it's not the best gearbox in the world as it is (feels a long way removed from the box in my FK2 Type-R, and even my Focus ST had a better box), so this really is the icing on the cake!
Back to the dealers I suppose.....
It does seem strange that they haven't sorted the issue with 6th on new cars as it's been an issue on many cars over the last year and a half so there must be updated parts used to manufacture it by now.Oh don't get me wrong it's not an awful gearbox, and I guess the issue with 6th is colouring my opinion towards it as a whole. I just found the ST had a bit of a smoother box overall and the FK2 Type-R had the best manual box I've ever used, but as a car wasn't a good daily driver.
I really like the i30N, and I love the Jekyll and Hyde it can do with N and N Custom for proper drives, and Normal for when pootling around.
For the record the only gear I have a genuine problem with is 6th, all the others are fine, but the box as a whole doesn't blow me away.
Surprised they haven't fixed this issue for newer models...i have a 2018 February build which does this. Its getting fixed in 3 weeks time. Its actually the 2nd time going back to the dealer. They aknowledged the fault and after having it for 3 days only adjusted the gear cables...they completely ignored everything i told them about the problem and what was needed to fix it...i was pretty annoyed and the day i picked it up, i had trouble getting it into 6th again..So i sent a email to them and cc hyundai australia into it. With a copy of paperwork i found on here with effected vin range..i received a call the next day with hyundai approving the syncro replacementHi everyone, glad I found this thread and forum from a Google search!

I feel the same way. When engine and gearbox are cold basically every time I try 6th it get's stuck. The only thing that helps for me is not trying to press the shift knob to the right and down while going 5th to 6th but rather trying to pull it just straight down as you would from 3rd to 4th, like in a straight line. Might risk accidentally slipping into 4th tho.
Never had issues with 5th tho, only 6th.
You're wrong; the gearlever is sprung towards the centre, i.e. the 3-4 channel. Changing between gears 1 and 2 requires pressure to the left, and between 5 and 6 requires pressure to the right. I think that's what @Hoodoo_Op. is alluding to. Or maybe your gearbox is more buggered than everyone else'sI don’t understand - you shouldn’t be pushing to the right.
