My i20N

Yeah, to be fair to the CanCoat it has beaded well and the only sign it had rained was some droplets on the roof - everything else had rolled off.

I used this on my wife's car, which is always parked outside, so far it's holding up really well, seems to stay cleaner for longer, and easy to wash. Feels very slick

Does it really do 4.8s 0-62mph now?
Honestly, I don’t Know. I got that figure by asking Ai - I told it what the standard O-62 and hp and torque were and then asked it to extrapolate the O-62 with the uprated figures. Initially it gave an even better time but that was assuming four wheel drive and it became 4.8 once I specified front wheel drive. I suspect it’s more like 5 to 5.2 seconds though.

My car is coming up for its 4th service and 2nd MOT test - both are due at the same time and booked in today at my local Hyundai dealer.

I was driving today and, for once, I wasn’t listening to music and I was really struck by how loud my car is 🤣. I’m not complaining but the exhaust is loud and throaty - but even more than that is the sound of the turbo spooling and the air intake shrieking when I lift off the throttle. Then there is the extremely loud cracking sound the exhaust sometimes makes. I’ll have to do a recording for you guys because it is quite entertaining and extreme! 😁😝.

Watch this to see how astonishingly clever and complex the engine in our i20Ns is!

Now the presenter states that this engine is in the Sonata, but it’s also true that it’s in the i20N - but not any of the standard i20 models (not even the N Line). It’s also not a unique idea but it is the first time it has been achieved purely mechanically and not rely on electronics.

Alpine A290 GTS - my test drive thoughts…

IMG_2967.jpeg

Today I drove the very car pictured above - the ‘hot hatch’ version of the current Renault 5. But you won’t find it in your average Renault dealer because Alpine is a separate entity (sort of) to Renault - in the same way Mini is to BMW and Abarth to Fiat. This is the more powerful of the two available options at 220 HP, but then, as an all electric car, it does weigh 1.5 tonnes…. apparently the equivalent electric Mini weighs an extra 300 kg! 0-60 is quoted as 6.4 seconds - but more on that in a bit….

Inside - I liked it - very modern but real switches and very clear screens. Nice quality materials and quirky fun design details. Seats are very comfortable, as was the driving position and you acclimatise to it in a matter of seconds. Obviously, being electric, it’s an automatic and there are no gears. Oh, it’s 100% electric, it’s not a hybrid of any kind.

Driving - it’s super easy to drive - ridiculously so. The accelerator is smooth and well judged and the brakes are really good - a touch over keen at first but you soon get used to them and when going at speed you don’t feel you are stopping a heavy car (which you are). In fact it hides its weight extremely well and the suspension is fantastic - firm and flat through the bends but very kind over bumps and uneven surfaces - obviously quite a posh set up (it rides on 19” wheels). The steering… well it’s direct and accurate but there’s no feel. The i20N isn’t exactly faultless in this regard but it’s better than the Alpine and has much sharper turn in (but then it has sharper turn in than most cars). The Alpines steering is probably not as dull as the Golf GTI I drove. The sound is a muted electrical whine but as you approach 100mph the sound changes and becomes more like you are entering hyperspace - which is fun. Apparently it’s the real motor noise but electronically adjusted and fed back into the cabin!

So it sounds as if I liked it - yes?…… well, sort of - but no. Suspension A+, steering C+, acceleration…. C-. Yes, despite driving it in ‘Sport’ the whole time the acceleration left me distinctly underwhelmed. Its initial pickup is pretty good - nothing surprising though. After that initial lurch it’s absolutely linear and 80 to 90 is the same as 30 to 40, or 50 to 60 and when I say it’s the same I mean exactly the same. Compared to my car it feels much more polished but mine feels (and is) quite a bit quicker and more raw. Having said that, I think this Alpine is a better drivers car than the GTI I drove as that was even more anodyne - despite having a petrol engine!

Thanks to frenchy2475 for putting me on to the detailing (car washing) brand called Bilt Hamber. If you have never heard of it then join the club, me neither. However, the stuff they make seems genuinely excellent. I bough their foam pre-wash stuff and used it the other day. I mixed a really tiny amount into my electric spay gun and sprayed my car all over and then just left the car for five minutes. When I came back to it I rinsed it all off with my garden hose and that was it - done. The next day I gave it a proper contact clean but very little dirt came off and just spraying it with the Bilt Hamber foam seemed to have done most of the work despite me not actually touching the car at all!
