I30N vs Golf R?

As mentioned >here< engine has the same base as Lancer Evo; but I don't think anyone can really tell much about mid-long term reliability of engine/gearbox since the car was just launched and it's a first on the sporty side by Hyundai...

Most people here probably have faith in Albert Biermann's input, Hyundai's 5 year no km limit warranty and how high the stakes are for Hyundai not to fuck this up... Plus maybe their former experiences with Hyundai whatsoever...

My future wife drives an I20 and we are very happy with the brand and how it performs until now....20k miles in 1.5 years and no issues at all.

Thank you for posting the link up in regards to the engine it seems that it should be a good engine and strong gearbox for up to 350 hp I would say.

Price difference at the moment between the R and the I30n Performance is around : £4000 pounds which is allot but the VW will depreciate less and hold the value better if there is an intend of selling after 4 years when the warranty runs out.
First of all let's get this out of the way..

1. So. That's 7k difference
2. It's 7k difference for a full N and and empty R.
3. R with equipment close to the N is at least 9k more expensive.
4. If I had 35k to spare I'd buy an S3 if not the R.
5. To sum it up, R it's 10k more expensive. How do you keep ignoring that?

Hi I am aware of what you are saying, the way I priced the R with dsg and wheels and electronic suspension on Car wow the difference was about 4k. And yes if you spec the R to the N spec you probably end up with the difference you have mentioned.
I am not interested in Rear cameras and all these new electronics, that is why in my case the difference is that small. The N comes with all these options and it is a bonus.
The list prices and configurations on all the cars on the dealers website are high anyway and if you use certain sites you get up to 15% discount on some of the models like R , 140i even the N has discount and you would not pay the List price.

I am not saying that the I30N is not the better deal here as we all know that.

I am comparing the two options but not as much from a financial point of view, I am giving up motorcycles (3 off) to have one hot hatch that is going to bring the smiles when i drive on the road and track days.

I am just trying to get feedback and opinions about the car and why other people have decided for the i30N, it is a decision for me to spend the next 4 years in the N or the R .
For me it is a big one and I am not able to borrow the cars for a weekend and see how they are to live with for more than 30 min in different situations so I am trying to get as much information as possible.
My intention is not to upset anybody here so I do apologise if I did.

@Maverick also (at least here and from what I've heard) I think VW is a little more eager with discounts and/or is able to sometimes provide interesting financing... Dunno how much that is the case...

Yes that's true.

I am with @Aleks. It's all a matter of taste and it's simple really. Opinions are posted, ad- and disadvantages are well known, as the prices are too. If you fancy it, and is so cheap as you claim, go for it! :)

Here is the best offer I have for an R with 19 inch wheels but without the suspension.
Add 900 pounds for that and you have the R price.
I still have time to decide as I will be buying one of these cars in August.

I don't think you can go wrong with either really. For me the R reminded me of listening to music on a compact disc player for the first time in the early 1980s. No clicks and pops of vinyl, more detail but somehow less involving. The N is somewhat the opposite. Now I don't have a compact disc player but still have a turntable. I moved from a Scirocco to the N and very happy with that decision, I was never interested in dsg so that could be relevant. I don't even like auto headlights let alone auto gear change.

Common misconception about AWD is there better in the snow, i live NE uk and had some snowy days of the years my RWD skyline was a death trap, my 400bhp subaru AWD better but holy wow AWD mean nothing on OEM tyres /summer tyres, however my poor 200hp Ceed GT with £150 worth of winter tyres can even use boost now and again :)

If you going AWD for the reason there safer in bad weather...there just not with rubbish tyres on

I was never thinking of winter and snow as we don't get much here... Used to have awd with winter tires when I lived in Germany and that was the only option in winter.
Awd for me at the moment is to provide better traction up to 62 or 70 mph and better traction out of corners..

Thats great as former owner of 400hp AWD car i loved launching from the lights with AWD on the dry ......until 3rd gear decided it wanted to live the ford RS behind me :p

I did notice you said you will be doing 3 or 4 track days a year. I am not sure how the warranty work over there, but if you do that here in a VW you will have no warranty for that DSG anymore.
Hyundai's track day warranty coverage was a big factor in helping me decide on getting the N.
