i20N fuel economy

morning guys.
Quick question for the lucky ones who have their i20Ns!

what’s the fuel economy like? Motorway and town driving..curious to see how ‘economic’ it is!
Hello @Elliot96 my last car was a brand new 2022 i30 Active that would cost me on average 100 dollars a week at the pump here in South Australia.
In Feb 2023 I took delivery of my i20N and it costs me on average $70 to fill up. At the pump a couple days back I filled it up at the new price of $2.29 AUD and when I saw a total cost of $46 thought there must have been a mistake! It is a lot more economical than the 2 litre. I drive around in N and Sport mode only and have the time of my life! It is cheap AF

My long time average is around 8 liters per 100km. I drive small distances with loads of accelerations and also when I go longer I usually drive above 120km/h, which means it doesn't really drop the average at all.

After doing 1000km+ trip on a day it made 7.4L/100km with 98 and average speed of 125km/h (135-140km/h) on cruise control

I really don’t understand this obsession with fuel economy - if this aspect is of such great importance there are many ‘better’ cars.

Because common sense says it’s worth knowing a ball park figure on expenses before investing in one of the most expensive things you’ll own.

Two cars come to mind i30n and rx8,both great affordable performance cars but horrendous on fuel,to the point where they become impractical to enjoy everyday.
That‘s what makes the likes of the fiesta ST and i20n such an attractive proposition,is the level of performance matched to 30+ mpg,so you can actually take them out for a blast without having to remortgage the house.

Especially at £1.50 a litre now 🫠 I daily both Ns and there’s about 15+mpg difference between them.

15 mpg is huge..
used to get 17mpg out of the rx8,would have been cheaper to get a taxi.😂
Haha!! Neither are quite that bad 😂Granted my commute is mainly average speed camera roadworks now, but the i20N will give 55mpg without trying, i30N usually low 40s both in N mode. No roadworks is about 50mpg and 30mpg. It’s definitely a big difference, more so if there’s start stop traffic.

Not sure how you managed to get 40mpg in the i30n,mine was like half of that, although taking into consideration London traffic and short stop start journeys, never got anywhere close to 40mpg..
Will agree on the 20 being way more economical,50% better than the i30,at around 35mpg.

But this is one of the most common threads on the i20N - I’ve seen dozens of threads on this! In my personal experience the fuel economy ranges from mid teens to mid fifties depending on how you drive and what roads you drive on.

The i20N's strong points are performance and practicality at an affordable price. If it didn't have decent fuel economy it wouldn't be affordable or practical.

Well, that’s your interpretation but it isn’t everybody’s. Performance and good fuel economy are pretty diametric to each other. If you drive the i20N conservatively then you get very good fuel economy but if you drive it more aggressively the fuel economy goes down significantly - nothing very revelatory in that!

You need to stop obsessing about the different fuel economy scenarios and just post your average since you've had it.

That's the bottom line that matters in the end.

Mine is 6.75L/100km or 41.85mpg/imp and it's improving with time.

I drive agressively when I get the chance but most of the time you're governed by speed limits and by other road users. Even so I average better economy than the official figure and considering the performance that's exceptional.

Not always the case, power to weight ratio has a huge impact on mpg figures, that’s part reason the i20n is so fuel efficient.
The reason the i30n isn’t so great on fuel isn’t because it’s a hugely powerful vehicle because it isn’t,but rather down to it‘s portly size, probably 200kgs + more that the i20.

You need to stop obsessing about blah blah blah blah
I don't see anything wrong about discussing whatever aspect of fuel economy in this fuel economy thread. If you don't feel like reading or participating, don't.

Now please keep it civilized.

The point in question would be that an uneconomical car would always be uneconomical regardless of how it is driven.

I was just pulling his leg about his 'obsessing' comments previously. There was nothing malicious in it.
