How To: Headunit firmware & GPS navigation maps update

Last time I updated my Kona N (October 22) it took about 20 minutes to verify then start the update before the screen informed me I could turn the engine off and the update would continue.

I have just installed the 221129 update and it required the engine ON ALL the time - so I went for a drive making sure Start/Stop was disabled of course!

I wonder why it was a different procedure?

It depends whether you follow the "generic" instructions on a possibly inaccurate or out of date Web site or the ones displayed by the system which have been specifically included in the package you are modifying?

Which comes back to my original post as to why it was different instructions and methods between both updates.

I just do as I am told - obey the last order first 😁

I take it you have a fl version?
I've had mine since 2018 and it's always been the case that you leave the engine running, and it appears that it's now the case with your model now as well.

No, there is no FL version for the Kona N (OSN) as far as I know and, from what I am reading elsewhere, there is not likely to be!

Anyway, my July 2022 vehicle which I bought in October was fitted with 2021 firmware so I updated it with the June 2022 version and then subsequently with the current one so I did the updates within a few weeks of each other and noticed the differing on screen instructions I got in the vehicle as to "switch engine off - update will continue in background" versus "Do not turn off the engine until update is complete" - maybe not the exact wording but that was the gist of the instructions.

Hence my original post. Maybe one version was updating more modules than the other.

Instead of spending time and energy messing about with different background sounds and cheapening some of the graphics they could add a few really useful functions. For example, actually incorporate some sort of over speed limit warning - that is, when the vehicle is at a higher speed than the limit the camera has recognised from a road sign then flash the icon or show your speed in amber or something! They could take a leaf out of the Mazda system on my wife's CX-30 - apart from the traffic sign symbols which actually flash with an orange halo when you exceed the limit the analogue style speedo actually has a red line marking the limit and a simple push of the "reset" button on the steering wheel will set your speed limiter to the posted value - plus or minus any offset you have selected in the vehicle menu. Simple, useful and very easy to use.

Erm, if you go over speed the the ‘legal speed’ number displayed on the dash does change colour. It doesn't flash, which would probably be better, but it does change colour.

It most definitely does not on my Kona N, unfortunately. That includes the traffic sign in the HUD, Nav screen and dashboard as well as the speedo reading.

How strange, maybe I should try a system reset although I thought upgrading the firmware would have the same effect?

I might try toggling the settings for where the traffic signs are displayed - I think it is optional for the HUD - not sure about nav screen and console though?

The i20N doesn’t have a HUD, just the infotainment/sat-nav screen and the digital dash. The current legal speed limit does appear on the dash but I’m not sure the car actually reads any signs (but perhaps it does); I suspect it uses the sat-nav to provide the info.

it should use front camera for reading the signs: The Intelligent Speed Limit Warning uses the front camera and information from the navigation system to identify road speed signs and display the speed limit in real time.

Trouble is I think that they are using the same core program then tailoring it to suit different models with various levels of equipment which, from previous personal hands on experience with far less advanced systems, is where the bugs start multiplying.

The traffic signs appear in 3 places on mine, map screen, HUD and digital dash but they resolutely do not differ if you are over speed.

I think I read in their blurb somewhere that they use info from both map and camera to display the current speed limit. I would assume (hope) that if these values are different then the lowest is displayed?

I can test it today on my already updated I30 N FL. On my way home are dynamic road signs (meaning digital speed limit signs which are changing depending on the traffic situation).

Any info about the latest update ?
It still have this crappy circles and that unknown car picture if we talk about PreFL ?

Have not seen the circles yet on my Kona N but the car pictures are an absolute bad joke!

Perhaps they needed some extra memory space so downgraded the graphics.

Just updated mine and haven't noticed anything much except for one thing so far - the Bluelink app now shows my odometer as 0km, even though the car itself shows a value when I check it. When I was leaving my friends house after the upgrade it showed as 0km, I drove home and when I checked again it showed the correct reading. An hour or so later and even after refreshes it's back at 0km.
I’ve updated and have the same issue with the Bluelink app showing the mileage as Zero.

Hello,

I own a 2019 i30N and saw that there was an update since this November. I would like to know if you have already done it and if or if it is possible to have videos of the new features (design etc), and photo because nothing is visible on the net.

Good day to all
