Exhaust- / Sound Discussion

It is not at all quiet. It is quieter for you in the cabin because of the turbo spool. The people in your rearview mirror will hear it LOUD

That's what I learned this day. Thought "hm. Never heard my car from the back" so my girl gave me some pops and bangs. Loud. Really. :D

Just done my first 1000 miles, a smallish amount in N (I’ve been ‘running in’) and have yet to hear it pop or bang. Is 4000 rpm the ‘magic’ number or am I doing it wrong??

I’d say so. Even a bit higher. Try a pull in 1st gear to around 4500rpm and shift up and it should pop.....

I find fuel makes no difference nor does ambient temperature.

Bang = fart/pop/crack coming from exhaust

Change gear too fast and it doesnt bang
Change gear too high up the revs (ie near redline and it doesnt bang)
Change gear slowly above 4.5k and it bangs
Only bangs when coming off the throttle once

In one of the reviews I read, the author claimed he learned to tell when the engine will bang and pop based on the boost level display, maybe that is the main relation...

The type of fuel will probably not make a significant difference. I'm not going to explain how the process works, as there are lots of articles the explain the process better than I can, but it's caused by unspent air/fuel mix entering the exhaust. So it is very temperature dependent, if the exhaust is not hot enough it won't ignite the mixture. This is why in very cold temperatures (-20C or below) you probably won't get any ignition in the exhaust, which is what many of us experienced during the winter.

Nope, creep the revs up or go full throttle. boost makes no difference

Surely its just fiddling with the timing, a bit like the old days in a fiesta when you turn the key on and off and it cuts ignition.....

Although artificially induced in the i30N, the pops and bangs are real. You still need fuel, oxygen & heat. My main point is that if you run the car in low "ambient temperatures" you won't have enough of the heat element required to ignite the air/fuel mix. I would not be surprised if the ECU will also reduce the effect in cold temperatures since it knows that the fuel will probably not ignite (though I'm just speculating).

Although yes the noise is 'real' its nmpped in so fake, like all manufactures do. It is far more realistic in the N then other makes. Having to bring my monaro to a meet to show the difference:p

Yes I agree ambient will have an effect but only if the operating temperature is severely affected however most pops and bangs like this are done by changing timing on zero throttle therefore basically over-fueling (ever so slightly), pretty much what all Evo owners to do say that they have antilag when they dont...

Honestly, drive a 80s'90s car and drive down the road, whilst still in gear turn the ignition on and off again and itll do the same thing. Same as Bee*R rev limiters

My understanding is that there is an injector in the exhaust manifold and fuel is directly injected, just to burn, the engine management side is not altered.
Other than being completely artificially induced through timing, this has several advantages, e.g. not overpressuring the engine internals, and no danger of borewash.

Hi,

I'm test driving an i30N Performance this weekend and I'm keen to get behind the wheel and see what this hot hatch is like :)

I like the sound of the exhaust in all the videos I've seen but think it might be a bit much for our neighbours (and the Mrs) when it comes to parking so I was wondering how the different settings actually affect the sound of the exhaust? Are the pops and crackles limited to Sport and N mode? How does it sound when reversing?

The guy oposite me has a VXR Astra, I've no idea if his exhaust is standard but it's grumbly racket when he's reversing onto his drive. I'd like to avoid that if possible and I'm not sure if I'll get a chance to fiddle with all the settings on the test drive.

Cheers,
-Jim

In normal mode the car is basically just a loud normal car, nothing obnoxious and moderately sensible, shouldn't be any problems parking or anything, although cold starts can be a little noisy sometimes.

On your test drive remember, that its YOUR test drive. If you want to fiddle with something that could be a potential deal breaker for you then fiddle away, and dealer who discourages you away from playing about with the car is a dealer to stay away from!

Pops and crackles appear over 3500rpm when the exhaust and engine are set to sport plus mode or if the car is in N mode, if your wanting it to be quiet when parking, bang it in eco mode and you won’t have any problems ;)

Thanks for the response guys, I'll be sure to check the difference between normal and sport or N in terms of exhaust noise.

Off topic, but Bobo I notice your i30 isn't Performance Blue... you must be one of the only ones!

Went for the clean slate, love the way it changes between pale blue, grey and white depending on the lighting, brilliant coulour to see in person:D, although there is quite a few different colours knocking about on here, take a look in the members cars section or the photos and videos gallery :)

As did I! Performance Blue is becoming less common by the looks of it!
