Checking the engine oil level
1. Follow all of the oil manufacturer’s precautions.
2. Be sure the vehicle is on level ground.
3. Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature.
4. Turn the engine off and wait for a few minutes (about 5 minutes) for the oil to return to the oil pan.
5. Pull the dipstick out, wipe it clean, and re-insert it fully.

some cars (Subaru for example) have two marks on a dipstick - one for cold (lower) and one for hot (upper) measurings

I suspect it is to decrease the chance of over filling which can do a lot of harm. Also cold in a very hot climate and somewhere freezing could be quite different, having the engine at operating temp removes this variable.

Fluid expansion. Same thing with automatic transmissions. Always check oil level when at operating temp. Years ago I was a motor mechanic and fluid dynamics does not change even after 40 years. :) Need an old wrinkly emoticon / emoji

I picked my car up yesterday and got he salesman to ask the mechanics there what oil is in the car they said 0w30 Fuchs

This is a question for all the people who have done this.

Has anyone found any metal particles in the oil?


Would be interesting to hear from anyone using an independent garage?

Just hit 1000kms so looking to do my own oil change.

I purchased an oil filter and “sump plug” from Hyundai

But the sump plug is just a metal ring? A little different to the sump plug from my MK7 Golf R.

Anyone know where this goes?

Surely that ring is just the new drain plug gasket. Sorry if I am stating the bleeding obvious here.
Just check with your dealer that changing your own oil (DYI) won't cause a potential warranty issue down the road.
No issue if a qualified mechanic / service company does it but please check if DIY is OK. I have seen something on this recently that indicated you should not do it but do check yourself. :rolleyes:
 
Its a use once washer/gasket. Goes onto oil sump drain screw. Washer get squashed by the nut.

Look at the washer closely, what do you see?

Usually they use SQUASHABLE washers.
They have a gap

Doesnt really matter as long as it doesnt leak/drip.

Just the squashy ones are use once and leak easier if re-used.
 
I looked on line and got what I think is a very good deal as Halfords is charging over £50 for 4 Litres of 0W-30 motor oil. I got and was able to purchase the proper Shell Helix OW-30 FOR 5 litres for £26 and free postage

What did you pay for your 5 Litres.

So far, my car has 7800 miles and the oil level is down to half way mark so decided it needs topped up so ordered the oil on Monday should be here on Thursday, it was then I found out this oil is pretty damn expensive on the other hand the 5W-30 oil is nice and cheap but very few garages even stock the 0W-30 type oil and if they do, they can order alternative brands even then they are quoting over £45 for 5 Litres some only supply 4 litres but I was able to order the Shell Helix in 5 litre. What amazed me a small 1 litre bottle of Castrol out of Halfords costs a whopping £19 so for £7 more I can order 5 Litres doesn’t make sense really.

So, have you had your car serviced at 10,000 miles and if you have what price for the service and what is it they actually do to the car I can always look in the hand service book I suppose but just curious what you all say and come back with.
 
You can look in the service book, but it doesn't tell you what items are required at each service. @Manted posted the service check list they were given, which did itemise the service schedule. Link.
