Optimum would probably be a big inlet in the front bumper/hood (or maybe even headlight?). Though as I see it (and as @TarmoT has stated a few times) the stock intake is good up to like 350/400 hp but the intercooler is already suffering stock.

The wise thing would be to replace the intercooler, but i think most of us here are focused on the sound/cheaper upgrades first :p

Fair enough, makes sense. But surely it would be more advantageous (even if only slightly) for it to be sucking air that hasn"t been through a hot radiator first? Or am I just clutching at straws here :D?
I'm not saying it's not beneficial to have cooler air entering the intake, just that it's not as important as the cooler compressed air entering the intake manifold. This is why anything you can do to provide cooler air prior to entering the intake side of the engine, is far more beneficial ie, (intercooler air/water, intake & TB spacer plenum, water injection, etc). These will be far more important for producing hp & tq.

The compressor/turbine will add additional heat to the air flow due to its inherent function and location but a proper sized intercooler, will quickly cool the compressed air moving thru it.

Now, does a higher volume & velocity cold air intake help? Yes, as there is more volume of air entering the engine. Larger volume of air in and out, thru a more efficient intake and exhaust scavenging, produces better performance. Everything on the intake & exhaust side, does its part and add to hp/tq production.

This is why ram air systems were developed, first for naturally aspirated engines and later for turbo/supercharged applications. Speaking of this, reminds me to check in with Dan @ Velossa Tech and see how the; i30N Ram Air Snorkel is coming along.:)

After all, the engine is nothing but a complex compressor.;)

Our cars does not need open cone filters, Oem box with snorkel makes whole job required. Also better flowing hard pipe and “bottle neck” elliminator will give additional benefits. In real life we will not live in numbers world and that additional 1bhp what open cone filter gives you over 5000rpm, can’t be tranfered to real performance of car. Most people who install open cone solution, are doing it because of sound and good marketing. Everyone will make his own decision and I’m not telling that open cone soulition is bad but it just does not give our cars more than 1bhp. Our cars need upgrade intercooler, 3.5” downpipe and a well made remap. The rest of performance related upgrades are just waist of money. But if people have money to spend upgrades what will make car sound better or engine bay to look more fancy - do it ;)

Re: better flowing hardpipe

Any thoughts on the airpipe for the stock airbox from here, I keep looking at it but at £275 it seems an expensive luxury. I guess you'd need the elbow as well to make it worthwhile?

I see velossatech big mouth snorkel is now available to pre-order but at almost £170 it also seems a bit pricey tbh.

There will be soon much better air pipes available on market than Gruppenzwang currently is making. The best pipe starts from turbo inlet, has flexible sections and is made from silicone. I have seen one prototype made by TurboZentrum and couple more but yes, they are all expensive and does not give you expected power gains.

I looked at both of those as well last week, basically the way I see it is the platform has not matured yet and anything that is released that claims even the tiniest of gains is usually a lot of money.

We need to either get more exposure of the N platform or just more companies to make products, so we can have competitive prices for stuff that actually makes a difference.

I have seen the one from TurboZentrum as well and if I remember right, it goes from turbo inlet to cone in one stiff pipe with no hoses.

I had gruppenzwang airpipe and the 76mm turbo airinlet and my car pulled 300 rpm longer then before. I have a remap and 319ps and i could feel the difference between oem and gruppenzwang pipe. My car was remaped with oem air inlet.

So what are you pulling off your car right now and about to advertise for sale this time :p?

Nothing now lol.
But if someone would be kind enough to buy my gfb valve in the classifieds that'd be most helpful :D:D
