Gearbox 3500 miles in - Gear 2, 4 and 6 got stiffer..

I just got back from the Dealership. Sat down with the General Manager and the Service Manager to discuss the current situation, my options and what will be done to the car. So here is what it looks like so far:

Issue 1: Difficulty engaging 6th gear

- Hyundai Technical Department has got back to the dealer and have advised them to order a synchro and replace it even though they are certain it already contains the uprated part (which is what the original 2018 TSB is for). This has been ordered and arrives tomorrow (Friday 13th).

Issue 2: A lot of resistance when trying to engage 2nd, 4th and 6th gears. 1st, 3rd and 5th are butter smooth.

- The dealership has identified this as being faulty shifter cables and have ordered a new pair. These also arrive tomorrow (Friday 13th).

Issue 3: Squeaky gear shifter when moving left to right, previously greased by dealership

- This will be investigated and remedied when the gearbox is back in the car.

Issue 4: Alloy wheel pitting/coating damage from potential underspray (see this: https://n-cars.net/forums/threads/oem-wheel-pitting-paint-defect.4398/ )

- I have sent pictures over to the Service Manager and have advised him of the thread above and the solutions people suggest. He informed me that they will try with Brake Cleaner but if that fails, they are not willing to use anything stronger (in case they damage the clear coat) so they will place them through as a warranty claim. Not sure how many wheels are affected but will try and push for a new set.


So far I have been given an estimated collection ate of next week Wednesday (18th). If the car takes longer or certain parts become unavailable/on back order they will give me an i10 or something to run about in. I already have a second car so not too bothered.


So that is the outcome for the issues themselves, now as far as the vehicle and my experience with it we have come down to the following conclusion:

- If I am unhappy with the car even after the above work has completed, I have to get in touch with Hyundai UK and file a claim after which speak with Hyundai Finance and do the same. They will want to know the whole story from start to finish and will deal amongst themselves and the dealership in order to get me my money back so I can move on.

I have not decided if I want to chase that decision yet, I think I will give it one last chance and see how it feels when I pick it up. But who knows, I am so indecisive sometimes and this situation is not helping lol.
Mate, I have seen worse soap operas on tv lool. Jokes aside, 18th will be a turning point on this matter, and you’ll be an inspiration to those who have the same issues.
 
The 6th gear thing was like that form new.

The sticky 2nd, 4th and 6th only developed a week before I took it to the dealer, which as mentioned is shifter cables related and not the gearbox.
Mine's done just over 100miles and 6th is pretty stiff, I also find 1st hard to get in from a standstill if the stop/start has kicked in.
 
Yeah I also get the occasional 1st gear issue but that has happened on almost every single manual performance car I've had.
I was going to say the same thing. I don't use stop/start but I've noticed that 1st can sometimes be a bit reluctant to engage, but I've had this on every manual car I've owned. Putting it into another gear and then going back to 1st always sorts it.

But it's also undrivable so I guess it's broken again :) this is great...

Right let me explain I guess:

5th/6th Gear issue is now gone, they replaced the synchros and it's perfect.

2nd, 4th and 6th gear stiffness is also gone, they replaced the shifter cables. (not sure how these can develop a fault after 3k miles ffs!)

gear shifter squeaking is also gone, not sure what they did to fix that, potentially related to the cables above or they just re-did the grease?

So far so good right? Yeah well no, while they did replace the shifter cables, they did not adjust them properly so now my car pops out of gears R, 1, 3 and 5 and when it doesn't pop out it feels like it is just hanging in there by thread.

There is also a weird smell inside it, smells of oil/coolant but I have not reported that since it could just be some spillage that will wear off around the engine bay.

I don't know who this Master Mechanic is that is the only "qualified" person to work on the N's, but he would struggle to get a job elsewhere I assure you. I called the dealership an hour after picking the car up and explained the issue, it is now booked in for next Tuesday morning to have this remedied.

Unfortunately this was the last straw for me, I have filed a complain with Hyundai UK, Hyundai Finance and the dealership is now aware of my intentions to get rid of this POS and never touch this brand with a barge pole. What a waste of time...

It feels like Hyundai don’t know what they have got with this car.Its such a step up from the other humdrum models.I suppose with time it will get better.I suffered with poor build quality and numerous trips to the dealership which didnt have a clue when it came to the N.

I've yet to hear many positive reports about Hyundai "service". It's worrying tbh, I'd be scared to take mine if it develops an issue.
 
I believe it has more to do with the dealership technicians, then Hyundai or the car. It's sad to say, some technicians are not conscientious as they ought be. Get it in, get it done and get it out. Don't follow up or QC the work.

I know sometimes it harder to change a service center, when it's about convenience. Not saying this is the issue here but if I was having this much problem from the onset with a dealer, I'd find another dealer service.

After listening to the ongoing saga and surmising; it's more about the service center, then anything else.

I'm really concerned to hear about this situation and how it's unfolded. I'd suggest taking it to another Hyundai dealership, as they're not all alike. I'd also file a customer complaint against the dealership as Hyundai needs to know the problems their having with one of their dealerships service centers.

I've seen and heard of drastic turnarounds in some dealerships service centers after customers complain about the service. Some first hand and some even here.

*On the next episode of CSI N, iiNNEX will try to recover his car from the dealership while the mechanics disguised as thugs puncture all 4 tires so that the N remains captive at the dealers for another week (tires “sold out”). Later on the episode, iiNNEX finds out he is being sabotaged, and furious, gets on his i10 (courtesy car provided), pays a visit to the dealer and shoots everyone around including the cleaning lady and some poor old man that was just getting his ionic from the 10k service. The police gets there quickly and arrests iiNNEX, giving the N to charity.*

It has nothing to do with the dealership, this last incident is the only "bad work" they've done, where it was not QC'd or road tested properly. All the problems till now are to do with the vehicle and the Manufacturer.

This is by far the worst built car I have owned regardless of what anybody says. It's going and I can't wait for it to go!
 
I'm sorry about all the issues you've had, but, I'm perfectly happy with mine, won't let it near a dealer though, I do all my own servicing, that's on every car I've ever had. I find the build quality to be really excellent

Does that void your warranty if you do your own servicing?

I understand but isn't the is the same dealer you bought the demo from?

Have you tried another Hyundai dealership service department?
Does that void your warranty if you do your own servicing?
If you engage in self-service or have another garage do the servicing it needs to conform to Hyundai's specifications and properly documented by you or the garage of your choice.

This also means keeping receipts and documentation specific to the performed mileage service.

It is the same dealer yes and their Ex-Demo was definitely not looked after. However they had no control over the New Car I purchased after that. Who could of predicted all of these issues?

I am not saying they are saints, however I cannot place the blame on them since the product is not fit for purpose and their sloppy servicing makes the whole experience even worse.
