Exhaust- / Sound Discussion

Cracks and pops, correct me if I'm wrong, come from additional supply of fuel (and this increase fuel compsumption). As now new cars have to comply with WLTP that reflects real / higher consumption, car manufacturers try to limit fuel consumption and emissions with all available measures... so maybe less cracks and pops is due to this?

Well I have the latest one and its plenty loud enough for Me in N mode, I have no idea if the older ones were noisier, but there's a time and a place for such things, there used to be a moped traveling past My bedroom window at 6 AM at all of 19 M.P.H with an exhaust that sounded like a rally car from the 80's! Very annoying! And its great that We have the option of turning the noise off, imagine the utter disgrace of turning up to the funeral of someone who died in combat with the popping exhaust? (note I didn't say' Poppy' exhaust, THAT would be a disgrace ) Having said all that, I think I have killed at least three pensioners at bus stops whilst in N mode by mistake , not sure, they were specks in the rear view mirror by the time I realised!

I work for a Hyundai Dealer myself and they have not mentioned anything about it, To be fair though Hyundai are quite good at changing things and not telling their staff. We have had a few MY19 sold and they pop and bang as normal still.

You could maybe check the V5 log book and see what the stationary and drive by sound is. It’s 108db and 73db respectively on mine. Registered March 2018.

Can some with more knowledge then me help with question which fits in here, assuming the it's timing retardation on the N does 95 ron fuel pop more then 99+ ron fuel as the higher fuel will have less det or am way off?

*lets stay away from the power debate and more millage regarding fuel plenty on here for that.

I’ve had mine a month now and I’m sure it’s not popping as much as the test car I drove, it only cracks at about 5k rpm, is this the same as the older ones?

That's almost the same as my non performance N, I have to wait until the second orange bar comes up on the shift indicator to get a pop

Not sure I have more knowledge, but my take is that the pop is caused by injecting extra fuel and keeping the exhaust valve open so the explosion flows into the exhaust. Fuel grade is not relevant. If it was some kind of det (and so affected by knock reduction) then it would destroy the engine pretty quickly.

That's pretty much what I heard from the mouth of a Hyundai dealer (one of the main ones in the UK)

The exhaust ‘popping’ or ‘banging’ in my car isn’t as linear or predictable - (for example) when the shift lights are showing half way or whatever.

It happens at lots of unexpected times which I enjoy. Just sometimes on swift upshifts it’ll bang once for example.

Well mine only pops when the shift lights come on around 5k, nothing under that, never had one on a down shift either, I’m just wondering is this due to a later build date or if something is wrong? Can this be fixed? Can’t say that I’m happy with it..

It cant be fixed as it not broken but is defo different, i find i can manipulate to a degree the pops buy the pressure of the throttle for eg a sharp hard jab high revs give the 3 pop loud where as a soft more progression of the gas to the same revs wont be as loud or as many

So do you get pops under 5k even without shift lights showing?

Why don’t you drive at 45-50mph in 3rd drop into 2nd and then just gently tap the throttle and release. That’s very predictable in my car - lots of machine gun fire everybody single time. It’d be interesting to hear your car, as I can understand a little of your frustration given that much has been made of the sound of the car.

Mine appears to be getting louder if anything. Certainly whilst idle.

I picked up my i30N Performance earlier this month and now have 2200km on it - I can confirm the pops are getting LOUDER! Australian release.

Anything over about 4000rpm and you will get pops and crackles with my vehicle, certainly don't have to be anywhere near 5k rpm. I would agree in saying they are for the most part very predictable and you can adjust your driving style to produce more or less loud crackles and pops :)

Hope that helps!

Yeh I’ll give that a go today, it is a bit frustrating tho as this was a big attraction for the car, but at the moment it’s only doing it when the shift lights show up..

Well I’ve only got 1100km on it so far so maybe/hopefully it will improve over time, won’t be too happy if it doesn’t..
