Has anyone experienced this kind of ticking/rattle sound that follows the engine RPM?

Video recorded with driver's door open (but the ticking can also be heard even with the door closed):

Video from engine bay. With stereo headphones I can hear that it is louder on the right hand side of the engine when looked from front to back:

i30N year 2020.

I guess it could be injectors, timing chain, high pressure fuel pump, evap purge valve? Any ideas?
Note: Mechanic initially diagnosed the high pressure fuel pump as faulty. The HPFP was replaced and the sound did not change.

I have tried to find youtube videos with the same sound but so far there has only been one video where I can clearly hear the same distinct ticking sound.
There are so many videos where I cannot hear this ticking sound so it seems to be some kind of a developing issue.

Another mechanic will investigate this soon.

Current diagnosis: The clearance is too high on the exhaust valve that is closest to the right side of the engine (when watched front to back). This explains why the sound is loudest on that side. Something is worn/broken there.

Take the cam cover off and have a look.
Clearances were measured with cam cover off so next step for the mechanic is probably to remove the timing components before removing the exhaust camshaft to look closely what is going wrong above that one exhaust valve.

Yo maaan, did you find the problem? That was the problem with? I have the same same same problem, I was at my dealer they replace the HPFP but the sound it s the same and now, I want to go back to show the video with your car and maybe with the changing parts that s you changed, at least to make a control at them. I cannot drive anymore ((:)

Yeah problem was found and fixed. The car is running perfectly now.

Lifter buckets were worn on the bottom side. All 8 exhaust valve lifter buckets were replaced. Only a few were worn but the rest were replaced too as precaution.

Timing chain, chain tensioner etc. were also replaced with new parts as extra because those need to be removed before the lifter buckets can be accessed.

Here is a picture for reference:
(this is NOT the exact part for i30N, just some lifter bucket picture from google that seems to be quite close to what the i30N part looks like)

Feel free to ask if you need more details.

Did you make it on warranty or did you pay by your self?

Warranty has ended so I paid it mostly myself. The dealer contacted the manufacturer too but they did not take any of the cost. The misdiagnosed HPFP replacement was mostly reimbursed.
How much did it cost? And how the mechanic did make the test for lifter bucket? Which method did he use?

Initially they just had the camshaft cover off to measure the valve clearances and also looked at the valves inside cylinder with a camera to see that valves are not opening/closing at the same time in the same cylinder.

I don't know the exact methods.

Clearances on 2 exhaust valves were found to be too big. One valve had greater than 1.00 mm clearance when they should be like 0.35 mm for exhaust.

Then they removed timing chain and camshafts. I understood that they just visually inspected the lifter buckets to find a pit under 2 of them.

Cost about 4000€ in total. Including parts and labor. Also an oil change.

Reasonable price for all, but I think where I live in Germany will be more more expensive. This sound drive me crazy, the car run perfectly, no issues only the sound. They tell me it s absolut normal, it s the HPFP but deep in my soul I knew it was not the HPFP. I hope to find the problem, that s sound took me all the happiness to drive the car. I want to make on warranty because I take it like this, I don’t want to pay 4.000 euro for something I didn’t broke.

If you still have warranty left then this should be covered. There can also be some country specific consumer protection things that could help as well even after manufacturer warranty expiration.

This issue did affect driveability of the car as well. Its now more stable to shift 1st to 2nd gear at low speed. Its kind of like there is less engine braking but hard to explain. Also previously the engine did not like RPMs less than 1500. Now I dont need to downshift so often if I just need to accelerate slightly below 1500RPM (like accelerating from 40kmh to 45) in 4th gear.
