Wing mirrors

Hello everybody,

I am about to remove the mirror housings to put vinyl on them. I would like to know if any of you have done it and how?

Do I first remove the mirror by pressing it out with some leverage, leaving the interior open and accessible to the housing or try to remove the housing directly?

I think these are the only options

I also want to wish you all the best in this difficult situation and take care of yours.

I've had a go at attempting to remove the covers (i have a spare busted up housing to experiment on) and got as far as removing the mirror glass.

Thats easy, carefully prize the glass up from the edges and it'll unclip. Unclip wires and fully remove glass, then you have full access to the inside of the housing.

This is where i got stuck as I could not find any obvious tabs/clips to unseat and pop the black cover off, it almost seemed bonded on......and I ran out of time.

I'll have another go and do a "How-To" if I manage it.

This ^ the only way to access the inside of the wing, rear view mirrors. Even if you break the mirror reflector, they're inexpensive to replace. The upper cover snaps into place and you have to be able to get to the clips to free the top cover.

Hoy he quitado por fin la carcasa, le di al mando del retrovisor hasta ponerlo a tope mirando hacia al suelo queda hueco entre la carcasa y el espejo
Pues bien metí entre ambos una palanca de plástico y salió bien luego quité dos pequeños cables y ya, quité también cuatro tornillos con la esperanza que la carcasa saliera sola, pues nada, no sale, ya me vine abajo porque está muy dura
No quise meter nada para hacer palanca entre la carcasa y el cuerpo del retrovisor, no veo pestañas ni nada que indique como sacarlo.
Dejo un foto donde podéis ver la ubicación de los tornillos

This ^ is exactly where I got too as well.
Removed the screws and no dice. Will have a go over the weekend to see if I can make more progress.
 
Si es un poco frustrante llegar hasta ahi y no poder quitar la carcasa pero tampoco es cuestion de romperla

Today, I have finally removed the housing. I hit the mirror control until it is fully facing the ground. There is a gap between the housing and the mirror.

Well, I put a plastic lever between both and it came out well. Then I removed two small cables. I also removed the four screws in the hopes the housing would come out by itself, nothing. It doesn't come apart. I've already stopped because it to difficult.

I didn't want to stick anything between the housing and the body of the mirror. I don't see any tabs or anything to indicate how to take it out.

I posted a picture, so you can see the location of the screws.

It's a little frustrating to get there and not be able to remove the housing but it's also a matter of not breaking it.

This is the schematic for the VN. What your showing is the actuator assembly and is removable. The scalp mirror cover, is what you are needing to remove.

There are four basic clips on the underside of the scalp and the rest are guides. If you look at the mirror, you'll find there is a rim piece (black 1mm edge) around the mirror, the scalp cover fits into. Once the actuator assembly is removed, you can then remove the screws inside the mirror that hold the rim assembly rim piece in place.

The whole reason the interior won't come apart is, you have to remove the actuator assembly. Once the actuator assembly is removed, you take out the screws and remove the rim assembly, which allows access to the locking tabs on the scalp cover.

Clear as mud right! :p

What a ***** of a job but it's off. Full guide and pics to follow but for now......
1) remove glass
2) remove centre screw from actuator and unclip it.
3) this reveals a tab which you push out and it releases part of the cover.
4) use lots of trim tools and CARE to release the cover from the outside.

Do I need to remove the mirror glass when I just want to change the mirror cover?
And is the cover just with clips or glued?

Yes, glass and actuator assembly need removing.
Cover is clipped on very tightly.
