Brakes Squeaky brakes

Hi all,

Just recently joined, had my Kona N for almost 2 months now.

One thing I noticed pretty much straight away when picking the car up was the brakes are pretty squeaky at low speeds. More so when braking gently on coming up to a red light, for example. Not all the time, but annoying/embarrassing nonetheless.

The only way I’ve found around the issue (and to save myself the embarrassment of heads turning to look for the noisy bus) is to brake a little later (and therefore slightly harder) which results in no brake squeal.

I mentioned it to the dealer when it went in for one of the tyres slowly dropping pressure (‘loose schrader valve’ apparently) The tech’s advice was it was likely due to the car being sat on the forecourt for a while and a build up of crap. A bit more driving should resolve it, if not, bring it back. Unfortunately, it has gotten progressively worse and is pretty much constant when braking.

It’s booked in again for them to have a look but that’s not until early September. I remember reading somewhere that squeaky brakes are a characteristic of the Kona N, but surely not to this extreme?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
K.

That sounds about right! If you have a quick search for brake squeal, the threads will point you towards how you can reduce it - bit of copper grease or equivalent helps.

The EN Owner's Manual actually mentions low speed light braking "squeal" and attributes it to the HP Brake/pad combination. There is also a TSB confirming it's normal in the EN. Check your owner's manual.

I keep hearing of brake squeal on the Kona but I can honestly say my 22 model, which I have had for 18 months, has never made any noises from the brakes at all. I wonder what is different?

I’ve been doing a bit of digging and note a fair few posts elsewhere about brake squeal on the KN.

Some relate it to the material the pads are made of with some mentioning ‘semi-metallic’ and ‘ceramic’ pads.

I don’t profess to know the technical nuances of either but it’s certainly good to know.

They all do it (different models), might be the garage you bought it from sorted it before you picked it up?

If they can then why don't they fix them all when people complain to their dealer
People do? 😂. My first one was fixed by the dealer when it was serviced. Lovely jubbly. DCT and i20N the dealer wants £160 + VAT inspection fee or something daft even though it’s in for service, and after the business I’ve given them, I won’t be paying that!

I know this is a bit old, but was the same. They keep referring to them as "performance brakes" and this is a normal characteristic. I noticed it happens a lot more when they are warm/hot weather.

Never too late to revive an old thread!

As you can see from all the posts here and elsewhere it seems to be a common problem although I can honestly say I have never heard any squeal from my Kona N brakes - after damp weather you can hear the surface rust getting polished off for the first couple of activations but that is all.

As for "performance brakes" they do work exceptionally well - the guy in the tyre shop even said to me "those are bl**dy huge discs on that" - and the GY Eagle F1 Assy 6 fitted all round improved the breaking "feel" as well as curing the slow speed sideways hop which was embarrassing with the OEM Pirellis!
