Exhaust- / Sound Discussion

Im the same N-Raged. I dont get pops unless Im giving it the beans and over 5k. Usually only on the first to second change and nothing afterwards. Im pretty underwhelmed.

Yep I’m the same mate, took it out today to try all different things but can only get one huge crack in 1st at 5k, in 2nd it’s like a gurgle but nothing after that, also not a single pop on a downshift yet either, I’m hugely disappointed, this was a big selling point for me with this car and I hardly get them, when most others are getting pops and bangs with hardly trying, surely this can be rectified? If Hyundai can’t then maybe proper tuning place could do something, it can’t be that much of a problem to fix could it? Because technically speaking it’s not the same sounding car that I test drove and paid for, that sound is part of the car, so I feel a bit ripped off!

I little dissapointing to hear another person not getting the famous noise!

I just got back from an after dinner hoon - I can 100% confirm that as soon as you hit 4k rpm in my Australian release i30N performance you get that distinct 3 pop/crackle sounds. It is extremely loud if you give it some up until 4k and then release the throttle or upshift.

I thought the car was little quiet UNTIL I stood outside the car and had a friend take it up the road... You really don't hear how loud it is within the cabin :D
Mine is a July 2018 build and there are plenty of pops when the revs are greater than 3000 rpm. Lots of sound when in N mode or Custom mode.

This makes me also little worried, car should be arriving around march and pops and bangs were one of the main reason for this purchace. Hope I won't be dissapointed. Also changing exhaust system is not an option since it's gonna cancel warranty?

Mine was registered Dec-17 and is very noisy in N mode, 1st gear not great, weather is S**t so just spins the fronts up all the time.

2nd, 3rd under about half throttle a nice deep rumble and over half get big bangs. Can get them in 4th if on full throttle as well. Also seems to work better when just lifting off rather than changing gear. Anything over about 3.5k revs.

I just went out and played in the rain for a bit (Michelin Cross Climates stick like sh.. btw).
I did some tests on mine. I generally get a single bang at 4k+ in low gears, but about 4 bangs if I push it past 5k (sounds like two fast bangs repeated). This is in N mode.

You exhaust should "season" and get louder over time, but I don't think time will effect the bangs. I could be wrong.

How can I tell if I have a my18 or 19?

Got my UK N in October, pops at 5k

Pops on downshift 3rd to 2nd, dropping into 2nd at about 50 MPH to force high revs. Did it this morning as a test, also did it loads on track 4th to 3rd too.

I've read somewhere that the fuel cap cover of the MY18 is round and the MY19 has a square shape. But dont know if that's the way to tell wich one is.

My understanding is that the N mode setting for the exhaust activates a butterfly valve in the dump pipe on the RHS after the muffler box.

My general frustration is that the car reverts to normal mode after every start up and I want the exhaust setting permanently on 'full noise'. Is it therefore possible to disable the butterfly and leave it in the fully open position 24/7, effectively rendering the exhaust system on full time N mode regardless of whatever drive setting is selected?

You could turn it to "open" mode and then disconnect the valve/butterfly controller potentially? But I think the electrics in this vehicle might throw a hissy fit about that o_O I thought the butterfly valves were much further along than the dump pipe but I could be very wrong.

I would be interested in a function that allows the car to remember the last mode and stay that way between start ups as well :)

As far as I know you still won't be able to get the 3 crack/pop backfire noise without N or Custom mode with sport+ exhaust.

Someone else may have a work around!

I also agree with @simmo777 in that the ECU would protest is some manner at the actuator being disconnected. Might just be a warning light or maybe something more. I know what you are saying about the "use the last setting" feature that would be a good idea and could be done in software I would think. That said, I can push the Flag button twice to N custom mode without too much effort.:)

So the only way to fix it is an aftermarket exhaust that’s voids my warranty? Wonderful..

I'm no expert, so someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the pops and bangs are a side effect of the Anti Lag System, right? So if you're not getting this, then maybe there's an issue with your ALS?
There's a good video on the forum that explains how the ALS works.

Fwiw I think everything has to be nicely warmed up. Once the exhaust is hot, the oil is up to temperature its impossible to stop it popping and gurgling away even at pretty low revs. But from cold, I have to really push it to get any cracks. Concerns over the gpf affecting noise was one of the reasons I picked an ex demo from pre-wltp.

Sorry its very possible, me and a few others on here are not getting the pops like we should be, ive had everything running hot and have slammed this thing to get some cracks but like ive said, only occurs in first at 5k, nothing shifting down either, not impressed..

@N-Raged sounds like a trip back to the dealer.

I think it’s probably a bit difficult to compare everyone’s experiences as they’re a bit relative to what you expected/had before. I might think it’s easy in my car, but it may not be dissimilar to yours.

She is going back to the dealer, I've talked to them about it and they said its not right and they'll look at it for me, like templeguy just said in previous post, its probably something to do with the anti lag system, I would find it hard to believe that this was something they couldn't sort out..
