Hey @Bu11eT quick question (I checked your previous posts but didn't find any info) - What are those extensions on picture. Did you got those with your seatbelts, or this is some addon? ;) Thanks in advance

Hello!
Just a couple of questions @Bu11eT .
When you installed the KW v3, did you replace the Whiteline Roll Center Correction Kit with the OEM one? I wrote this because the whiteline kit already increases camber.
And also, after having done some kms, do you think it worths losing ability to easily customize comfort of the car with the OEM system by installing KW coilovers?

I run the whiteline Rollcenter correction kit side by side with the v3.
I do not miss the customizability of the comfort level one single bit. The v3 can even be more comfortable while maintaining sportiness if needed.

Hey y’all. Had a few busy weeks, so I wasn’t able to keep this thread up to date much.

Mid of April: Trackday at Padborg Park – Denmark: Shot my Brakes

Picking up from my last post, the first trackday of the season was at Padborg Park in Denmark. It’s a small but braking-intensive track which I learned the hard way. Went there with my Conti SC7 since the forecast was a bit mixed, but it stayed dry, so I was able to get a few fast laps in until my brakes decided it was time to go…

If you recall I had the DBA 4000 Series T3 Discs with the DBA Xtreme Performance Brake Pads on the car. But since the track was so braking intensive (its super short with 2 straights with hard braking points at the end), my disc temps reached 680°C – with my cooling setup that is. Those temperatures combined with my ABS kicking in because of the hard braking was too much for the pads and they were literally shredded away. That marked the end of that trackday for me :D

In the end I had to stop at buddy‘s place to get a set of used OEM pads that could get me home (big thanks to him!). The whole front axle was shaking when braking on the road, since there was no pad material left.

As you can see on the pics the pads were totally shot, but I was positively surprised by the DBA discs, since those looked waaayy better than I anticipated after such a bad beating.

AP Racing Brake Upgrade

The next logical step was a brake upgrade. I already ordered it at the end of last year, but didn’t have time to put it on. Well – until now I guess :D
With the next Trackday right around the corner I quickly mounted it and unfortunately only had Ferodo DS2500 at hand which had to survive this one Trackday until I would switch to a different set of pads.

Some facts:
  • 4-pot calipers
  • 355x32 2-piece discs
They do fit 18” wheels, although I had some very light scraping on my Autec Clubracing wheels where the balancing weights were placed. This won’t be an issue as it was only very light touching and I will upgrade the rims to ProTracks either way, which have a bit more space in that area.

The full brake kit does have German TÜV.

Mid of May: Trackday at Bilster Berg – Brake Testing

The next trackday was then at the Bilster Berg and it was more a shakedown of the brake. Since I was not happy with the OEM brake at any given time, I was very cautious with the new one. But after a few laps in I noticed the improved brake performance and especially how reliable it was – mainly because the temperatures stayed way down. Just for comparison, with the OEM brake I was only able to do 3-4 push laps on the Bilster Berg before the pads were at its limits and the braking performance would degrade. With the DS2500 pads on the AP Kit I did only experience super light fading after 10+ continuous push-laps (which you normally never do as the tires would overheat).

Beginning of June: Trackday at Bilster Berg – New PB, Shot my Tires

After the successful shakedown test the next visit to the Bilster Berg was in June and for that one I got the pads I wanted: Endless MX87. This is not a hardcore-track-focused pad, but it’s the “Street+” pad from Endless. But still, the braking performance was night and day compared to the Ferodo, unfortunately coupled with the improved braking performance came the temperatures. 10+ push laps were no longer possible but I now had to do a cooldown lap after 5 push laps already. I don’t even want to think about the temperatures pads such as the N39S would cause. Maybe I need even more cooling, maybe I am thinking about something already – who knows :D

Still, on this trackday I was able to put down a PB with 2:01:90 which is still slow compared to others, but it was fast to me. I’d say the car is easily capable of doing sub-2-mins, but on that day the tires were shot and I was not driving very well. Either way, shows the performances gains a BBK can give you!

Had a few mishaps on that day too: My ATH diffusor was tired :D

So I had to remove it. Looks like shit now 💩 :

Tire was tired, too. Gonna now switch to Nankang AR-1, since the Zestino's are not produced anymore.

Thermostat- and Coolant-Hose Party

During those two Bilster Berg Trackdays I noticed that my coolant temps were a bit too high for my taste. 30-mins stints usually resulted in 102°C max coolant temp, longer sessions even had 105°C max coolant temp. Luckily I had a buddy who regularly visits South Korea, who could bring a VN South-Korea-Thermostat back home for me!

For those of you that don't know: The VN's thermostat has the identical measurements of the one in the i30N, since its the same engine.

But: Each market Hyundai sells those cars in has a different thermostat installed. The part numbers are identical, the thermostats are still different, depending on in which market you buy them.

The European (or German) version starts operating at 88°C coolant temp, the south-korean version starts at 82°C. Part numbers are identical between both versions - only way to get your hands on such a thermostat is to buy one from Hyundai in South Korea.

The coolant temps stay now at ~85°C during normal driving instead of 90°C. So it should give me a bit more time before the coolant gets too hot. With the time-limit on the stints it should fit the bill - I hope.
While the coolant was drained, I also swapped in the Forge Coolant Hoses with a buddy - thanks again for the help!

Next steps

This week I am gonna visit Stefan from SJ Exclusive to put the AP BBK in the papers, to retrieve my widened fenders and the new Protrack's with 255 (front) and 235 (rear) width Nankang AR-1's. I am still waiting for my carbon hood. If that arrives I can send all the parts to the paint shop and to PPF straight after.

This might be a stupid question but where is the thermoset on our cars and is it possible to open it without losing fluid?

Aaaand a new post about the last changes that happened on the car :)

Wider Fenders + Rims + Tires

Was lucky to be able to get the old set of Mücke widened fenders from Stefan from SJ-Exclusive. He actually did to the fenders what I planned to do either way and he wanted to get rid of them because he now runs the SpeedEngineering widebody kit. So it was a fair price. Had to visit him either way to finish up the TÜV-procedure for my AP BBK, so we went ahead and installed them.

Besides the widening, Stefan also cut out a hole on the fender and the liners. This way the high pressure air in the wheel well can escape easier.

Small disclaimer: They are not yet adjusted properly, because they will go to the paint shop in a month.

Together with the widened fenders came new wheels: Protrack One in 9x18 ET35 in the fronts and ET50 in the rear. In the front I upgraded to Nankang AR-1 tires in 255/35/18 and in the rear they stayed 235/40/18.

6-Point Harnesses

On the last trackday I was annoyed by my TAKATA 4-point harnesses not fitting properly, so I got a set of Beltenick 6-point harnesses to solve this issue. Since I am only running them on-track, TÜV was not an issue, so they were way cheaper than the TAKATA ones. Mounted the lower part of the harness to a custom bracket a buddy made for me. The bracket is still not perfect, but good to start off with. Got a HANS system, too, since the harness supports it.

Gearbox Cooling Tests

Since the time I installed the analog gearbox temp sensor, I became unhappy by the high temps measured in the gearbox. The oil easily reaches 120-130C, depending on the stint length - a temperature plateau is not in sight. This only happens on the track, but I wanted a solution.
As a first test I designed some cooling ducts for underneath the car, gonna verify the tests next time on the Bilster Berg end of September.

Carbon Hood + Meppen Trackday + Fuelpump issues

After an awful lot of waiting time, I finally got my carbon hood. Stefan was kind enough to bring it with him to the Meppen Trackday and we mounted it on site. Looks really nice imo! Will also go to the paint shop, so its also not yet adjusted.

Also experienced some fuel pump issues on my way to the track and on-track as well:
When trying to do a full pull with only half the tank filled with fuel, the car just won't pull but stutter instead. Filling up the tank again resolves the issue.

On my way back home the issue was gone again. Reason enough for me to check the LPFP before the next trackday and see if there's anything wrong with it.

DIY Clubsport Net

Also got my DIY clubsport net completed. My mom did the stitching, I did the printing of the adapters to mount it :D

The struts will also go to the paint shop with all the other parts.

Not for improved rigidity, but for looks, as well as to prevent stuff from flying all over the place.
Cost me ~100€ compared to the 500€(?) Stern-Performance asks for theirs. Was not at all willing to pay that much money.

Canchecked Replacement: Plextuning Dash

I finally had enough with my CanChecked Dash. For normal usage in terms of just showing pre-configured values it is fine, but as soon as you want more, its software is just annoying. Not user-friendly, buggy as hell and some of its software-components just show plain wrong data.

(Expensive) Solution: The Plex uSDM-200 Dash. Similar formfactor, waaaay better software, more capabilities, standardized CAN-Interface, and so on...

I am loosing the nice mounting solution, but I prefer the new position since my hands are no longer in the way. Will create a more rigid mount in the future, currently its just a simple phone-holder which is a bit wobbly at times :D

I also now found the can-values for gear, driving mode and tire temps on the C-CAN and I am working on getting the revmatching and brake pressure to display in the correct format as well.

Trackday at Bilster Berg

Another trackday at the Bilster Berg - another PB!

This time I was able to break the 2min barrier - a big step for me as a beginner! Super happy about it!

88Lr7jT.jpeg

I still need to figure out the AR-1 tires and which pressures to run. I am getting closer to a sweet-spot but still not super happy as of now.
Also, my prototype gearbox cooling seems to have done its job:

Blue: Gearbox Temp, Orange: Vehicle Speed, Green: Ambient Temp
The chart above shows the gearbox temp without cooling, the chart below is with the prototype cooling.
You can see a more stable temperature and an average drop of about ~5C. For just a bit of additional airflow not too bad!

Here are a few pics:

Fuel Pump Issues

During the last stint at the Bilster Berg Trackday and on my way home I had the good old fuel pump woes again. Luckily, since I am logging as much data as I can and since I am now able to log computed data fields inside the ECU, I was able to quickly pinpoint the issue: The fuel pump's dead. So off to my dealer getting a new fuel pump, luckily delivery times were short and I combined it with a quick service visit.

Padborg Park Trackday at Night

This one was special. A trackday at evening times - and the last 1.5hrs in the pitch black. The track is only partially lit, so I had to rely on the shitty LED lights of my car. Although I had code-brown moment when a gravel trap appeared out of nowhere because I missed my breaking point in the dark, it was still a super interesting experience and it definitely gave me much more respect to the N24h drivers than I already had :D.

Plans over the Winter

- Refresh the KW v3 suspension: Already removed the suspension from the car and packaged it up. Will be sent to a specialist for inspection and a refresh - I lost a few adjustment screws somewhere on the road and I wanna make sure that the dampers are still working as intended.

- Paint the front fenders, the carbon hood and a new front bumper: One fender is already off, the other one will follow in the following days. Need to adjust them correctly and do a bit of cutting here and there to make them fit properly.

pCbogaY.jpeg

- Nicer front fender vents: Working on nicer front fender vents. Had just a grille there previously - didn't like that as much, so planning something like this to fill the hole:

ceL787n.jpeg

- Gonna switch the lip to a new one: Since my Maxton Lip destroyed my front bumper by ripping out the screws, I am gonna replace it with a different one. Stay tuned.

- Looking into tire temperature monitoring: Since I had a few troubles with finding the correct tire pressures as well as dialing in the camber setup, I am looking into multi-channel tire temperature monitoring. That should allow me to collect multiple data points from a single tire to get info about geometry setup as well as live and more accurate tire temperature data ontrack.

- Looking into improved brake and gearbox cooling: Since I am now running RSL2 pads in the front, which I absolutely like in terms of bite, my brake is in need of more air. The temperatures ontrack are not good for either the caliper, the pads or the disc in the long run. Gearbox cooling could also be improved, the cooler, the better.

I run AR1's at 33psi hot which is about 26/27 psi cold. That is with stock suspension.

yep, running 2.1bar (~33psi) hot which for me is on the limit of what the tires can handle without sliding too much. Still not sure if its supposed to be that way, for the AR-1 every N-Driver I ask about the pressures says something completely different ranging from 2bar (29psi) to 2.5bar (36psi) hot.

Thats why I wanna include the detailed tire temp monitoring. The system I currently use only refreshes every ~30s and is not super accurate as it uses the temp reported by the TPMS sensors and no the surface temp of the tires. But at least the current system gave me some rough hints on what pressures keep the tire temps in the optimum operating window.

Thanks for that , I have gone through about 6 sets of AR1's I am currently trying out some Kumho V730's 200TW rated tyres size 235/35R19

Switched to Kumho V730's as they are only $195 as opposed to AR1's that cost $360 , ran the V730's the other day for 4 x 20 min sessions , gave the same grip as the AR1's and stayed consistent for the 20 minutes . They like hot pressure of 35psi as they have a softer sidewall than the AR1's . For the price I will stick with the V730's for the time being.
