Gearbox Oil Change

Forgive my ignorance on the subject but I am struggling to actually locate a suitable oil that complies with the specification in the manual. It requires API GL-4, SAE 70W which I believe is very low viscosity.

Using the oil recommendation tool on the manufacturer websites yields further confusion with the following suggestions being made:
While both lubricants are rated at the correct GL-4, neither complies with the 70W viscosity and strangely the Motul recommendation is actually for DCT transmissions (although it says it can be used in some trans-axles).

While I have no doubt that either oil would work well and that 75W is incredibly similar to 70W, I am very conscious that any deviation from manufacturer specification could result in trouble if my gearbox grenades in the future.

It seems that the Shell Spirax S6 GHME MTF (H for Hyundai) can only be bought directly from Hyundai themselves and there is next to no information about it. Even Shell do not seem to offer any other 70W for general sale.
Thank you for looking for the right oil spec.

I see Honda MTF3 oil is compatible too.

Just to confirm i take it the below oil will be fine to use as well as this is GL4 / GL5 and 75W90 .

MOTUL 1L TRANSMISSION GEAR 300 75W90 – SYNTHETIC ESTER, MOTYLGEAR 75W-90

I believe that that oil would work no problem however the manual states 70W so using a 75W-90 is technically out of spec. I'm sure it would be fine but there is always that risk that they refuse to complete a gearbox repair under warranty if you haven't used the correct oil.

That being said, using millers, Motul or redline may reduce wear as they are higher quality, but you take that risk in case something goes wrong.

I guess that if you did have any gearbox problem you could just keep the old stock oil and then refill with this before taking the car in :)

For anyone that's interested, I was quoted £40 from the dealer for the gearbox oil change in addition to the normal service. That's a much better price than I was expecting.
Is it advisable to change the gearbox oil in which interval? 10k, 15k ?

Good question to which I don't really know the answer. All I can say is that mine will be changed every 20k km - but I am really big on fluid and filter replacement over and above factory recommendations (every 5k km for engine for me). Will also depend on how hard you are on it too, of course. If I tracked frequently I'd replace every 10k. I make these statements with zero scientific knowledge though :D. Manual says every 120k km - no thanks!

You replace the engine oil every 5k and you don't bash or track the car? Jesus, that's commitment :)
Gearbox oil wise, 120k seams fair enough...... for a FORD MONDEO of 2001 not a performance car that, whether you want it or not, has a gearbox that needs to be cared. January i'm definitely be booking the gearbox oil change.

Oh it's tracked (but rarely - it's still my daily) and bashed (quite occasionally) but I always look after my machinery whether it be a fountain pen, a set of beard trimmers, my lawnmower, my bike, my firearms, or even just the household plumbing. PMPPPP - Preventative Maintenance Prevents Piss-Poor Performance.

Good move - do it.

That is quite catchy on your ear ;) Shame on me for not live by PMPPPP rules, unfortunately.
You get that oil change yourself or it "collides" on the services?

Hahaa. Mate, that is just me - not everyone need abide. I get the 10k change done by dealer to maintain the relationship (and because of reasonable capped price servicing charges), and the 5k change done by a friend who is a qualified mechanic with me supplying the consumables. Anyone can change oil and filter, even this idiot (me ;)) but if it is done by a licenced tradesman and properly documented they can't deny me warranty. I try to play fair.

Amen to that! Nicely planned. Appreciate the feedback mate.

Peugeot 308 GTi 270 has a gearbox oil change every alternate service - first one at 10k first service. I presume because it has a Torsen LSD it needs more regular oil changes. Peugeot also change brake fluid every 2 years so it's either gearbox oil or brake fluid on top of engine oil, filter and spark plugs every service. I guess if you are getting the highest production BHP for a 1.6L you might want to make sure it doesn't eat itself.
Cheap servicing too considering how much they are doing each time as because it's a fixed price setup for all 308's so I paid the same as a 1.0L 90BHP 308.
The brakes are 380mm 4 pot Alcons on the front and fantastic stopper but you certainly don't want to be replacing discs and pads on those. Around £2100 including labour and Alcon will not sell you the discs or pads direct you are stuck with buying them from a Peugeot dealer!
