Brakes Brake Upgrade Discussion (Discs / Pads / ... )

News from EBC!
After working with myself, EBC are developing a braided line kit and a big brake kit.
The BBK uses a 4-pot caliper, 355x32mm floating disc with 48 curved vanes, and boasts a weight saving of 6.5kg per corner despite the increase in disc thickness and diameter.

Watch this space, it shouldn't take them to develop the kit as it is all made here in Northamptonshire.

The biggest disappointment about the brakes for me, is the fact they look like they were painted with a 4 inch brush... in a farmyard... on a windy day... and the farmer dropped the brush a few times!

Truly awful finish.

You mean the quality of the paint finish? If so, yes - inclusions everywhere I look on my calipers... dust/grit, longer items, one bit that does actually look like a bristle or similar.

Mind you, also found a couple of inclusions in the channel around the boot too (and one on an alloy wheel), so I think Hyundai had a bit of work to do on their paint lines!

To be honest, I think the paint is okay....Remember the car is cheaper then market equivalents for a reason. Still an amazing car though!

Just by aftermarket and improve it :)

Oh I appreciate the cost differential, but the inclusions in the caliper paint especially really look like some chap painted them in his garage on a windy day and left the garage door open.

As/when/if funds permit, I may get them tidied up or powder-coated. I don't really need to upgrade them, as the performance is ample for my driving - it won't see a track in my ownership.

Why to develope so expensive details for pretty cheap car? Full carbon ceramic kit is almost 15% of new car value. I don’t understand why nobody makes brake pads for oem brakes? 800€ for Pagid pads is maybe ok for German people but for me it is total overkill (I dont have TCR racing car). Car has been on market more than 1-year and still nothing :(

Hmm. If 58101 S0A10 is a correct part No. for i30N Performance, it seems JSN has a different code for the pad (58101 K9A10). Also, the price of 58101 S0A10 in Europe (EUR 124.34) is lower than the price of 58101 K9A10 in Korea (KRW 194,150), which is kinda unusual. I can think of some explanations but no idea which is right.

  1. JSN and PDEN use the same K9A10 pad and the S0A10 pad is for 250N (I heard 250N has FF grade pads, while 275N has GG grade pads. I also heard there are small difference between calipers, such as piston diameter, finishing, etc, as well as diameter of rotors. But I’ve never seen 250N, so I’m not sure about those).
  2. JSN and PDEN started to use the same K9A10 pad recently and the S0A10 code is for older pad.
  3. JSN and PDEN use the same pad but they’re coded differently for some reason.
  4. JSN and PDEN use different pads for some reason.
  5. Currently at #4, but become #2 eventually.

#1 The brake discs are smaller diameter on the 250PS version. Therefore it is quite likely that the pads are slightly different.
250PS 330/300 mm: 275PS 345/314 mm diameter.

There are several OEM replacement pads. Pagid, Winmax, Dixcel, Hardron, DeFigo, etc.

Wave brakes look good but check with this company before purchase does he have a copy right and r & d research to back up claims.
Cheap does not save live
Think if looks a good deal research it first
P.s. there is only one company world wide that have the copy right for wave discs.

Do you have any suggestions for something that might be available in North America by chance? I'll be looking to upgrade to track pads for the summer season.

Regarding the OP;

High performance brakes
Drilled rotors

Pick one, you can't have both. Drilled rotors are garbage, unless you like making a modern art piece from the cracks that form in between the holes on the rotors after a few hard braking applications on the track. They serve absolutely no purpose other than to look cool. If you want actual increased performance (although it's still arguable if they're an improvement over blanks) get some proper cryo-treated slotted rotors.

I think Winmax is available in the US. And I saw some European shops selling the Winmax pads for i30N, so even if Winmax NA distributor don’t carry the pads for Veloster N yet, you can mail order those from European shops at least. You can probably do the same with Japanese or Korean shops but UK/EU shops might be easier to deal with for you.

For the choice of compound(they got multiple compounds ranging from W1 to W7 and WN1 to WN3, WE1 to WE2 for the international market), W3 is about the minimum you can use on your front for track duty. I got the W5 and most Koreans use either W3 or W5. And I saw RSRNurburg using W6.5 or somewhere around that on some of their Asian fleets.

Thanks for the info. Would you happen to have any part numbers for the pads I could look up? I can't seem to find them via google sadly, although it seems as though I can order some versions of the Winmax pads through Amazon Canada thankfully.

Also, has anyone else figured out exactly what vehicle the N's brakes are based off of/taken from? I can't find a definitive answer, and that might help with parts availability if we can figure out a more common vehicle that uses the same pads/rotors.

I’m not sure about mine since I dumped the box long ago. Also, those Winmax pads currently circulating in Korea are basically coming from one dude who sent some sample stock pads to Japan and placed some orders accordingly, at least for certain Korean cars. So they’re basically some sort of custom order variants and there might be some difference. I found one UK shop listed i30N pad as WMP1518 but I have no idea whether it’s correct or not, or whether it’s the same or not.

https://www.part-box.com/WMP1518-winmax-front-brake-pads-hyundai-i30n-performance

EDIT - bought another Winmax pad and the box said WMP1518-19.
