Brakes Brake Upgrade Discussion (Discs / Pads / ... )

Has anybody with the Forge BBK fitted experienced like a humming or whirring noise when braking hardish from a speed on say slip roads coming upto roundabouts etc? I have started getting this sort of noise on my BBK kit which uses the same size pads as the Forge kit and wondered if its just the cheaper pads i have that may now be causing this noise? I didnt have it when the kit was first installed but now ben on over a year the past say 5 months i have been getting this noise and it goes right through you from inside the cabin.

does it only happen when its wet?
is it related to how hard you press the brake pedal?
can you feel it in the steering wheel?

No its not just in the wet.
Yes the harder I brake the louder the noise (as i say its mainly when your coming up to roundabout on slip roads and from speed etc)
cant feel anything through the steering wheel

“A “whirring” noise while decelerating at any speed is most likely caused by bad pinion bearings or loose pinion bearing preload. This condition is typically always diagnosed as a bad ring and pinion gear.”

I should say the above is not my own opinion, it’s just what Google came up with (no mention of being rain related).

Never had any noise from slotted rotors but had a loud whistle from some drilled rotors I did myself under braking at high speed.

I have some molten pad deposit from the DS2500 stuck to my discs.
Has anyone cleaned the discs before with an abrasive material?

Do you run slotted rotors by any chance? That's a typical phenomenon on those. Though it shouldn't be super loud.
I have both slotted and drilled and did think it maybe just the noise from them. or even tyres perhaps. I want to change the Pads at some point to better ones so maybe we shall see when i do that. its just a hard one to figure out.

Not sure what's going on here reading this, never had problems like this even when racing.

I would suggest there are some really crap brake pads on the market and you need to avoid them.

Would suggest sticking with the OEM pads or something like Winmax, I wouldn't bother with the rest for road use.

No, things just got worse. Need to take discs off and inspect :p

Well, sounds strange for me. Maybe like @Carlos said: There are some really crappy pads on the market. Never had a problem with that. OEM, Pagid RSL29, Endless... And my i30N was driven by racetrack-beginners that put the brake pedal down the whole time, trying to melt the pad material onto the brake disc. 😁 After that i brake a few times really hard and the feeling is again as it should be.

a different question:

What is considered to be the best big brake kit bang for bucks?

I've seen may manufacturers make bbks for the I30N however €1000 for a set of spare rotors is quite insane.
Availability of spare parts (pads, dust boots) is another issue.

I guess Forge is the one of the best bang for bucks?

Regarding the cost of rotors it very much depends what kind (single piece - slotted, drilled, two piece, fully floating) and what brand.

in germany we have vmaxx 6-pot for ~2k€. you may need wheels with specific dimensions if you are planning to run 18".

nexd is also working on a bbk kit (4-pot and 6-pot options) which is supposed to use the brembo brake-caliper e.g. from the megane RS (meaning huuuuuge availability of parts). Price is yet to be known but it will surely be above the vmaxx.

All parts mentioned are tüv-certified, meaning no "cheap shit".

Best bang for back is hard to say, heavily depends on the use-case.

Just my opinion but even the stock brakes are overkill for us in New Zealand.

I have take the MR2 Turbo to a track day on the stock 15 inch wheels and the rotors were tiny, the i30N rotors are as big as the MR2 stock wheels ! and the car is not that much heavier.

Depending on how you drive and it its a manual or a DCT then simply a front rotor upgrade will do the job. Will switch when the stock rotors wear out to the Fella ones but mainly due to the weight savings which is significant and the rotors are directional so they now will pump air due to the impellor action. Based on experience I will avoid any holes or slots, both are a pain in the long term.

No need to change callipers or even put in spacers the Fella ones are a direct OEM replacement and are a floating 2 piece.

As as said just my opinion but people out there are wasting a huge amount of money for a setup that mainly just "Looks better"

@Bu11eT Yes, I have noticed this too. It is strange that the i30N is allready 5 years old and only now someone is making work of this Megane RS caliper swap... Should be a huge upgrade indeed!

About Vmax, it seems their BBK is only 330mm?? https://www.v-maxx.com/en/products/big-brake-kits/263

@Carlos I agree for 90% of the owners the brakes are more than enough. However when you track the car on a hot day +25°C you will still get brake fade after a few hot laps. (EBC blanks + DS2500 + cooling plates removed).
A multi piston design is just superior in terms of force distribution vs a single piston. This results in a more even heat pattern too = less prone to hot spots and molten brake pads.

I have contacted Fella. They also have a BBK for the i30N. However spare discs cost €1000 shipping not included 🤣 https://www.ebay.com/itm/125055374997

Can you link me to the discs you have mentioned?
