Unable to find a Kona N to even sit in (UK)

I am a bass guitarist and love the 60's colours like, seafoam green, surf green and Daphne blue. Performance blue fits right in there. That's my excuse for loving it.

OK, well they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

I must admit I thought that light grey was one of the nicest I have seen but I must say the black one I have looks more "solid" especially at the front end because, of course, the huge grille and other appendages all are the same colour - maybe could have done without the red striping, but that's just me!

Anyway, when are you likely to be behind the wheel?

They all look great and I think the Cyber Grey would be my 2nd choice. Blue is a radical departure for me when I have been in silver cars since bout 2010, it proves you're never too old for a change !!!

As for when I get her, most likely it'll be early January, long enough to be living without a vehicle in a village with no trains or buses.

The lady at Rallyflapz was happy to let me send back the unused Toyota ones in exchange for a set to go on the Kona. "dirty roads around here" so that's me started with mods.

Any idea if a space-saver will fit under the boot floor, at fist glance it looks like it might?

Snap, although we do get one very intermittent bus service but no pub, shop, street lighting and the road sweeper refuses to process our road because it is un-adopted - funny we pay the same Council Tax as everyone else though!

Ah, it was a Toyota deal that went sour then - I wonder what model? I also have a preference for silver - one of the best for staying clean looking.

I have the Rallyflapz shorties on mine - not too sure how effective they are - not washed the car since I fitted them! I think the OEM ones have a better design (obviously) as they exactly fit the body work and have a slightly channelled/cupped profile BUT they are not long enough of course and they cost a fortune.

If you get an Hyundai space saver (for i30N or Kona N) it should be an 18" and will fit into the boot well - I was lucky enough to do a deal when I bought the car and got the complete OEM kit for a reasonable price although they have still not found me the correct size tool tray insert. Not really bothered as the boot floor does not need it for support and without it there is plenty of room around and in the spare for odds and ends etc.

If you can find a genuine spare for either model it has the advantage of being a slim alloy instead of the "dustbin lid" variety! Have a look at the link quoted above and you will get the idea.

So does anything clamp the wheel in place or does it just stay put ok? I carry loads of junk in the boot so the space instead of the foam will be useful.

Does this i30N wheel fit over the front calipers?

It was GR Yaris that went south and they guy selling an alternative one put the price up after I had expressed an interest, also a dealer made me travel 40 miles to buy a cancelled order only to find that he wanted £7k more than RRP.

As you can imagine I got rather fed up with all this so I threw the towel in. I actually had 3 deals go south didn't I? It was like someone had written "Sucker" on my forehead whilst I was sleeping.

One of the deals did get me in a Yaris for @130 miles, fun but noisy and loads of vibration, but most of this was on the motorway were it certainly did not excel.

The Kona is going to be way more practical and for me and its worth it for the colour alone

Hi all

I am teetering on the edge of a purchasing a brand new Kona-N but without having any chance of a test-drive, I would just like to sit in one to confirm the seat is OK from my creaky old back.

It would appear the N comes with an electric adjustable lumbar support but could someone confirm that it has a 4-way adjustment, i.e. does it go "up & down" as well as "in & out" ??

Thanks in advance
if you suffer from back pain, the KonaN may not be a good choice, because the suspension is rather firm. I suppose it all depends on the state of the roads in your country.

On my Hyundai kit it was the normal large plastic disc with a bolt coming out the middle - probably better to fix it down as you don't want a heavy wheel bouncing around inside the car in the event of any mishaps!

OK on the GR, they are supposed to be very good but they look a bit small - as you say the Kona is likely to be more practical even if, ultimately, not quite so quick - it's just balancing your priorities. The Kona N is more than quick enough for me and yes, the ride is firm, I would not say harsh, and the seats are very comfortable - all to be expected in what is a sports car wrapped in a compact SUV body. Maybe not as hard-core as the GR but you gain an extra cylinder (not a fan of 3 pot motors) lose the 4WD but get virtually all the kit you have to spec up on the GR included in the base (only one for UK) model. Apart from that the GR is only manual and I specifically wanted an auto so the fact that the 8 speed DCT is standard suited me fine.

I've only done a couple of trips on the motorway and the Kona seemed fine, very stable, immediately drops a cog or two when you squeeze the pedal and rapidly picks up speed (easily too much!) and that was mainly in normal mode ;)

My only slight disappointment is the level of road noise - some days seems worse than others?

Well, the 7k over retail just proves the point - a lot of stealers are just that!

Yes, but be careful - not sure that will fit in the boot well as it is actually a larger diameter tyre (689mm) than the normal wheels (671mm) which maybe why they give you a storage bag?

The OEM i30N/Kona N space saver is only 632mm diameter so quite a bit smaller than the normal wheel!

I did look at one of those for the Mazda CX-30 but it would not fit in the well.

As an alternative supplier and slightly cheaper, with more details, have a look at

I would have a look under my boot floor and try and judge/measure if the bigger tyre would fit - maybe if the weather warms up a bit next week! 🄶

This one on eBay has the correct 125/70x18 tyre "I messaged them to confirm", maybe the company you mention or a spin-off of it but I don't need the tools.

I assume there is something on the floor that a bolt will screw into to fix the wheel down?

There is a threaded (m8) hole in the floor into which the threaded bar goes, the cap then winds down the shaft until tight against the wheel. I had to add some PTFE tape to the threaded bar on the item I got from ebay as it didn't feel as 'secure' in the hole as I wanted (it must be a thou or so off of the correct M8 size). I also added my own rubber gasket between the cap and the surface of the wheel as I didn't want any scuffing..

I heard 2023 maybe the last year for the Kona N. What a shame that the Kona N may only be a 2 year production vehicle. This would make it rarer than the Veloster N.

Don't worry guys, I have 8mm & 10mm threaded bar in the garage, just glad it sounds easy enough to do.

Oooer - you did say you had to pack it with PTFE - was it that thick stuff for gas joints? Maybe thick enough to make M8 bolt tight in M10 receptacle?
Nah, not that much! Just a couple of turns to make it 'toight like a toiger' (to quote Goldmember) ..

The more difficult bit to accomplish is a large enough washer to clamp the wheel down with?
I used some thick rubber insulating mat and cut a disc out of it.
