Squeaky noise

Hi everyone!

I've had exactly the same squeaking noise for over two years, even with just a slight press of the accelerator while parked. After all this time, my Hyundai dealer finally identified the turbo wastegate valve as the cause and ordered a replacement.

I don't know how much the part costs, since they're replacing it under warranty for me as the original owner.

P.S. I asked ChatGPT, and it estimates the replacement would cost around $550–$850, including parts and labor.

Hmmm… so this squeak is with the engine running? The engine is running but you are stationery. You have your foot on the clutch and gently Rev the engine and you hear a squeak - and the dealer thinks this is caused by the turbo wastegate. Is that an accurate assessment of the situation?

Yes, that's correct, except my Kona has a DCT, so there's no clutch pedal involved.

I believe the dealer's diagnosis is accurate because after they investigated the issue and identified the problem, the squeaking actually disappeared for several hours. Unfortunately, it came back the next day.

I could hear the squeak while driving, especially at low speeds when there was less background noise. But it was also very noticeable while parked with the engine running. I barely had to touch the accelerator pedal to hear it.

And interestingly, I could hear the exact same squeak when shutting off the engine. It was especially obvious then because everything else was quiet.

Well if it’s the valve I guess it means a new turbo but the valve actuator can be replaced on its own. There’s quite a bit of labour involved - remove the downpipe, the first part of the exhaust, to get at the turbo, then remove that.

The dealer diagnosed the problem as being with the valve itself, and that's what they're going to replace. They've ordered the part and will call me in a couple of days when it arrives. Hopefully, they got the diagnosis right! 🙂

Could you please show the part you are talking about?
I would like to know exactly if your problem is the valve actuator (motor with rod to the valve) or the valve inside the turbine housing

Did you check post #18? Maybe greasing fixes your problem

Here's what the dealer wrote on my service paperwork: "Turbo waste gate valve." That's all the information they gave me, so I'm not sure whether they mean the valve itself or the actuator. Hopefully, I'll have the repair done on Tuesday or Wednesday, and I'll be able to provide more details then. 🙂
