Squeaky noise

Hello everyone,

I've had my I20N for about a month now, and I started to notice a little squeaky noise (like a bird singing briefly) a while ago. At first I heard it only on poorly surfaced roads when at very low speeds. I thought it could be the suspension making a little noise. But I recently realised the noise is also here when on smooth road.
I really don't understand where it could come from, I am able to somehow "provoke it" by driving at around 25/30 km/h, accelerating a bit and lifting the throttle. Thing is the noise is more noticeable when I do that while steering left...
Do you guys hear a similar noise, is it "normal" ? Could it come from the turbo or something ? Or from the steering ? It does not seem dangerous or what, but I would like to know where it comes from and I did not have a chance to talk to the dealer yet.

Thank you guys.

I have a squeak but I think it’s coming from the passenger seat possibly not screwed down properly do you hear the noise when someone is in the passenger seat ?

Thanks for the answers !

If it comes from the turbo/wastegate/diverter, should the noise be audible when the car is parked and I rev it a bit in neutral ? I haven't tested it but I'm not sure the noise is here when I'm not driving.
About the passenger seat, yes the noise is there no matter if I have a passenger or not !

isnt it when you took the foot off the pedal you would hear it?

Well, I can hear it more often now, for whatever reason. I made a little video where the squeaky noise can be heard, if it can help, here it is :
You can hear it directly when starting to rev and after I stop revving.
I've talked to the dealer, I have to go back next week to make an apointment with the workshop.

Hey, were you able to find out the reason for that? I have the same issue with my i30N, but comes and goes. Only when warm engine, in N-mode and when in gear/driving every time i press throttle and let go off it just enough to have some torque...

Sounds like some exhaust movement or the active exhaust spring is bad.

It’s hard to distinguish or diagnose.👍🇺🇸

Hi.

I've the same sound in a i20n, but less agressive, any updates?

Regards.

Hi all,

Here is the FIX

Note: Symptoms include, chirp or squeak noise when applying or letting off throttle.
Does not require much throttle and can sometimes be achieved with just a tap or feathering.
Whether in gear or parked, seemingly only in N mode or some variation, and for me, only once the car is at operating temperature.
Easiest to hear at low speeds and in a town due to how sound travels, or while parked.

With the engine off (and cold), pop hood and locate wastegate actuator, shown in images, at the back of the engine, atop the turbo.

With a bit of force, attempt to move the rod and listen for any sounds, this wastegate actuator probably needs some lubrication, and often gets hot. It will produce a different noise when it is hot but regardless, is there noise?

Some spray on penetrating lubricant, or whatever you have handy, work it in by moving the rod by hand, or start the car and give it a couple Rev's because face it the car sounds gorgeous, and you are looking for any excuse.

Squeak should be gone, although might require more or different lube and probably at regular intervals.

I also sprayed the exhaust valve on the right-hand exhaust pipe. However, I am quite sure it was the wastegate actuator as discussed above.

Thankyou for this fix. I had the same issue and because of your post found where the squeak was coming from. Sprayed Wd40 on it and will keep an ear on it. Thanks again
