"N" vs "N Performance" Differences

Hi All!

Currently owner of a Merc A-180 (2013) and looking to go for something with some serious performance.

My prime consideration at the moment is the i30N.
I know it's 25bhp less than the "N Performance", but 250bhp is still more than enough for me!

I understand the "N Performance" sounds very snap-crackle-pop (watched vids on YouTube).

But I wanted to know what the standard "N" sounds like, is it really lame and quiet? or does it still produce a sound that'll put a smile on your face?
I had a search on YouTube but all the videos show the performance model, even though they vloggeres quote "N" in the vids.

Any feedback/advice would be great, looking to get one approved-used around November.

I'm sure it does still put a smile on a face, I just believe the 250 version has only one purpose - marketing, and Hyundai isn't expecting much sales of that version. That wouldn't be exactly good news for resale value I guess... And exactly like you say - everywhere you look it's the performance version, someone threw a question on the forum if there is anyone with the 250, I don't know if anyone turned up... there it is: >click<

At first I was considering the 250, but when I got into specs and a couple reviews, I got the feeling the car was designed as Performance version and then slimmed down to make the base version, not the other way around, decided to go with how the car was intended, plus all the glorious reviews are of the Performance version, so chances are that without the LSD and the brace the car might be just, perhaps not as good bang for buck anymore...
My only gripe was the 19 in wheels which I was worried would make the ride too stiff, but I guess I'm a peace with them now ;)

Just things to consider.

Not 100% sure, but I believe all versions of the N sound quite the same?

N Performance offers the following features over N:
• 19" alloy wheels
• 2.0 T-GDi - 6 Speed Manual Transmission 2WD (275PS)
• Active variable exhaust system
• Driver's seat electric adjustments
• Driver's seat memory function
• Electronic limited slip differential
• Performance tyres - 19" Pirelli P Zero
• Seat trim - faux suede & leather (seat facings only)
May vary from country to country.

As far as I know, you can't even get hold of a standard 'N', the dealers I spoke to all said they couldn't order them, so it was an N Performance or nothing. You get that extra bhp, the exhaust, and a few other upgrades, electric seats, 19" alloys, and a few other bits. For the sake of a bit extra it's worth getting the performance, I think, which if you get a good deal, you'll probably get it very close to the standard N price).

Probably not much help - sorry!

I'm one of the few who ordered the base version. Why? Couldn't justify to pay 3.800 EUR more for the performance version (price difference in Belgium) and definitely don't want 19" wheels. Also, I will not often drive it on a track and our speed limits are ridiculous.

Some reviewers find the normal i30 N more playfull and fun because of the smaller tyres, less weight and abscense of the limited slip differential. And that is exactly what I want, it hasn't to be the fastest or most efficient in each corner. I want more drama at lower speeds and control the car myself.

Some of the reviews are in Dutch or German, but if you look at the numbers, the 250 bhp version is not always the weaker brother. It seems to be faster for overtaking! Which might be negative for fuel consumption according to Autobild Sportscars: 10,3L non performance and 9,3/100km performance.

Great info, thanks!

How does the N sound in comparison to the N Performance? Exhaust/Engine sound etc...

I don't see how. The active exhaust has a valve that is 0%, 50% or 100% open. Without that, there won't be the difference between exhaust
NORMAL/SPORT/SPORT+ when switching between ECO, SPORT and N modes.

I noticed the exhaust pops&bangs more when in N mode than when in custom mode with exhaust fully open. Not sure if it was coincidence, but I couldn't get it to pop&bang standing still and revving the engine until I set it in N mode...

The pops and bangs are not directly related to the exhaust valve. They come from the map injecting fuel to the manifold. They may be linked, but that is not essential. The valve alters the tone and volume of the standard exhaust.

If it has the same mapping.
If you watch the video posted by petrolFTW above (non-performance N), then at 3:35 you see there is no exhaust variability on the touchscreen display of options, but at 2:00 the presenter says that the car pops and bangs.

Another review of the 250 bhp model. This guy Thomas also confirms a massive plop from the exhaust, see at 20:34. Good review.
