I30N head unit vs. regular I30 head unit

Hi guys,

I recently bought 2017 I30N Performance. Previous owner replaced the original head unit to Android based Radical R-C10HY1. However, I'd like to return to original one due to rear view camera not working, no GPS, etc.

I've found that I30N units have "S" in the part number, and units from "regular" I30 have "G".

Below you'll find the lists for from partsouq.com site:

Units for I30N 2017:

Units for I30 "regular":

Do you know if a head unit from "regular" I30 will work properly with all the N features available in I30N?

Thanks
Mat

I may be wrong but I think the i30n uses a different operating system. Mobis compared to the other i30s

It should be the same, but software is different. There are feature flags which are disabled on regular I30. It is possible to flash it using N firmware, but it's a bit tricky. I did something similar when I had my unit in US locale instead of EU and all the texts were missing. All I had to do was to change password on a firmware files as it is generated from build.props file of currently running firmware, so when you try to update using a file which doesn't match your currently running system, it will fail. But it's a bit tricky. You need 2 USB thumbstick. One with original firmware, one with the one you want to upload, which is from N. First you need to start update with a original firmware as it checks RSA checksums, which are going to be invalid on your ZIP file, after approx a minute, RSA and CRC should be checked and at that moment, you have to quickly swap USBs, right before it starts copying a new firmware. If you do it at wrong time or too slow, it will fail as there is a check for USB removal, that check is not running during a short window, when it is about to start copy process. If you manage to do it correctly, it will copy your firmware and install it into head unit.

//disclaimer: I'm not 100% sure, if units are the same. My answer is bases on what I found while decompiling firmware.

Thank you! So this is one solution (a bit tricky but still) I can use.

I recently managed to find N head unit with a reasonable price (Part number: 96550-S0100).
I called to the seller and he told that there is a component protection on that unit and it will not work plug & play. He said I need some codes from the Hyundai dealer or a capable car electrician.

Was he correct?

Also… on the list from partsouq.com there are couple of part numbers of N head unit. Can I buy any head unit with the part number from that list or do I need to specifically check what p/n I previously had installed?

I don't think there is any coding needed. You can find many people on youtube replacing PFL headunit with a FL one without any coding. Maybe seller meant variant coding? And codes for hidden menus in headunit? You can find these codes on the internet, or I can dig it from the firmware for you if you need it, but I don't think you can change N/nonN variant in engineering coding menu. That can be done only by flashing firmware from N version. I think.

Not sure about part numbers. I think it might be based on car equipment, so they come with correct firmware/features enabled. If you plan to do some "hacking" anyway, I don't think it matters.

But again. I might be wrong, I did not try to reflash nonN unit with N firmware, it's just all based on my experience/observations.

My addition: the N headunits have the N app installed. This is not a variant coding you can activate, hence the difference in partnumbers. I think it probaly also has an extra chip installed to communicate to the chassis canbus.

I don't think there is any special canbus chip. Canbus is always the same and even non-N headunit has to access canbus. It doesn't need a special chip to communicate with a different ECU. It just needs a different software to understand packets with additional settings.

Actually it looks like standard I30 has a completely different model. You can see it in navigation updater software. I30N has Standard Class Gen5, I30 has Compact Class Gen5.
For example I20 has Standard Class Gen5, Tucson, Santa Fe, i40.

Looks like they changed mainboard manufacturer between Compact and Standard class.

Quick update.

Just installed the recently bought head unit (96550-S0100). So far works as a dream. No codes needed. Just plugged the cables and it started.
