Tuning i20N Engine & ECU Tuning Discussion

I’ve done a little asking around and some research and the world of car tuning is a fascinating one. Essentially the various elements of the process are quite seperate. In this case the raw ability to access the i20Ns ECU is being sold by these guys:

but as I understand it you still need additional software to do the actual tuning and there is an element of groping in the dark. The number of people able to do this level of work seems very limited and this is the stage we are currently at.

Yeah I've learned more about tuning in the last month than I thought there was even stuff to learn. And I'm barely scratching the surface with knowledge. Being a recent unlock, there's nothing known about this ECU, a lot of the map files are still being figured out, there's still a map hard limiting boost across the board that no one can find by the sounds of it. On the plus side, a lot of it has been worked out and tuning is absolutely possible now with a few neat little add-ons like: RPM Limit increase, Pop and Bang adjustments, full exhaust valve control across the rev range and different drive modes.

I personally don't have access to any of these tools but as far as I can tell the main ones being used are this, the BitBox/BitEdit software, although I think K-Tec had a bit of a nightmare with this on a demo car. And the flash tools being offered by N75 and SXTH Element. I think AUS and German companies have had a much more success than UK companies too. There isn't really any dedicated Hyundai tuners though here in the UK except maybe Courtenay but they're primarily Vauxhall.

Early numbers (based on Cherry Performance and MT Tuning's posts on the i20N tuning) for "Stages" (I hate that term) are looking like:
Stage 1: 235-240hp/360-400Nm
Stage 2: 255-270hp/400-460Nm

Yeah, I’ve seen that from Cherry. The problem, as I see it, is that once you change the turbo does that mean you need a BOV and a clutch and plugs and intercooler and……

i think intercooler, clutch, plugs is a definite yes, the stock wastegate recirculates in to the inlet pipe so maybe a recirc pipe change will be necessary

That is to be expected. Around 270-280 hp at the crank (not wheel hp as the video describes), with a hybrid turbo, downpipe, etc. I see the limit of the stock turbo around 250+_5hp at the crank with all the bold ones included and with perfect ecu tuning. What i didnt expect from a hybrid turbo, is a drastic drop of power from 6400 and up!! Also tuning does not include a higher rev limiter (rev limiter remains at 6600 rpms) so as to take advantage of the big turbo.

time for a hybrid turbo, i do wonder how much power and torque the engine and clutch can take before needing reinforcing :/

Klasen Motors in Germany have managed to remap a i20n up to 255ps and 388nm.

Only intercooler upgrade and open pipercross intake.

if you check my earlier post, this is exactly what i said!! i strongly believe 250-255 is the stock limit of the car without a hybrid turbo

Do any of these companies own their own development car or do they just rely on Guinea pig customers? I know that Courtenay Sport own their own car, but do any other tuners?

MT in germany i think it's their car,

TRS used a guinea pig and big fish garage used multiple cars, ktec were using a guinea pig and had a bit of trouble writing to the ECU. autotuner have a pretty terrible flash map out that i'm sure multiple mobile tuners will offer.

I don't think a lot of them own the car

MTT and Klasen own the development cars.

Cherry have their own car afaik.
Ah, do they. I don’t think any of the U.K. guys do, except for Courtenay Sport that is. As far as I’m aware all current remaps require removal of the ECU and connection directly to the board so it’s not something that can be done remotely.
