Hello everyone,
Currently, I am preparing for CompTIA Security+ exam, and I see that there are many Performance-Based Questions (PBQ) in this exam. It is worth noting that such questions are significantly different from ordinary multiple-choice questions. In the case of multiple choice questions, I am able to eliminate some of the offered options by knowing the theory, but PBQ requires me to use my theoretical knowledge in practical situations. One of the challenges, I face when working with such questions is how to start in a situation where there are multiple security problems in the scenario. Thus, the question may have something about network traffic analysis, wrong access control settings, possibility of malware attack, or configuration of a security control. Although I may know the theories of these problems, putting them together and determining which step should be taken first may take some effort. I try not to take any actions before analyzing the symptoms and the task itself. Another issue is that I want to be able to remember the purpose of a certain tool/control rather than the definition of it. This is important to me because I would like to be able to use my knowledge about the topic when answering the PBQ and know in what cases I should use a certain measure, what problem it solves and how it interrelates with the other security measures. To help myself, I will look at the objectives of the exam and try to find out in which areas I need to work by looking at comptia security+ certification exam questions. At the same time, I will try to use a security+ practice test to see if I am able to apply my knowledge to the scenarios I have never seen before. In case if I do not answer the question correctly, I will analyze why my choice was incorrect and which part of the information from the scenario led to that choice. I am also attempting to balance the time I spend studying in terms of concept review and practising how to apply them together. There may be some areas of study such as incident response, network security, access control, threat detection, and security configuration that may all come into play within one scenario. I am hoping to gain confidence in being able to analyse the situation, identify the issue, and determine how to respond without being sidetracked by information that is not essential. For those who are studying for the CompTIA Security+ SY0-701 certification exam, I would be very interested in hearing from you regarding your strategies for preparing. Do you practice PBQs through lab exercises, scenario-based exercises, or by reading the explanations after each attempt? Are there specific types of PBQs that you find more challenging than other PBQs? I would like to know what works for others. While looking for ways to practise these scenarios, I came across this page for the CompTIA Server+ exam: I thought I had share it here in case it helps anyone else who is preparing for the exam and looking for additional practice.
