Hello,

I recently bought pre-FL I30N hatch with 100k KMs. Steering seems way to heavy, is it just me, or do you think there may be some issue with the car/steering ?

I am not the strongest person, but driving semi-hard through the corners takes a lot of effort even when the steering is set to normal. I have to have both hands firmly on the wheel to push the car through the corners, but nowhere near the limit of the car.

Steering feel/stiffness feels fine at very low speeds (i.e. parking lot etc) and changing steering settings is noticeable at those speeds.
When driving on the roads (lets say 50kmh+) changing steering from normal, sport, sport+ makes a difference, but just a little one.

Driving in ECO mode is the same as above, ok at low speeds, very hard once the car is moving.

I have also disabled LKAS fully in the settings in a case it was doing something in the background.

I know its not a best comparison (hydraulic power steering, 400kg lighter car) but previously I had 2001 Celica GTS for 12 years, which had pretty stiff steering by modern standards and was joy to steer the wheel through all the speeds with perfect response. It was manageable easily in high speed cornering and when compared to I30N its night and day difference. I drove around 20 card through the years, but nothing sporty, so cant really compare.

From all the research and reviews the I30N should be awesome cornering monster, I never had a "wow, that was quick through that corner" moment, just a frustration that something seems wrong, but maybe I just suck.

What is your opinion for this ? What can I do/check before I take the car to the dealership ? I will also try to find someone in my area to have some comparison.

Check the steering geometry first, any decent tyre shop should be able to do that. I'm assuming you do not have any fault lights on?
Check tyre pressure, swap wheels front to rear, are the tyres known makes or cheapies?
I've got a 2019 i30N and the steering is pin sharp

I have the same issue. Have a FL i30N DCT with 30k km on it. It just happened randomly from one day to another. I instantly realized that something is off as I have driven the car daily. In low speeds it's barely noticeable. In high speeds it feels like driving a tank... šŸ˜ž

How worn are your tyres? I have found that as mine get within a mm or two the limit, the steering starts to get heavy.

Good point. I will switch to winter tires shortly and will ask the dealer to take this opportunity to also have a look at the suspension and related parts.

i have the same issue, my steering rack is already new, but had also the issue with the old steering rack. summmer or winter tyres doesnt change something, issue is always present. what are your solutions to this problem guys?
