Gearbox Issues

Hello,

Picked up my 72plate 20N around August last year with just over 12k miles on the clock, and as of today, 19k. Recently, the car seems to struggle to go into 1st gear, and there is now resistance between 1st and second which feels slightly strange.

The clutch feels like it vibrates under my foot more than it previously did, and finding the biting point has become a little harder...

I don't have any clutch slip (tested this on a flat road in 5th gear), but it does now feel harder to get a smooth start when I am driving, but not consistently. The pedal underneath my foot almost feels like it comes back slower than it used to.

Hoping someone on here may have an idea of any issues, as the car is already going in next week for the footwell aircon to be repaired under warranty.

(Side note: has anyone also experienced the paint on the brake callipers chipping and falling off? :( It is worse on my fronts but affecting the rears)

I do love this car, and I think that may partially be to blame for being so picky about it being right!

Sounds like the clutch may be on the way out.

Painted calipers are all a bit prone to this issue. The aluminium oxidises and the paint flakes off.

As YNwaN says sounds very much like a clutch issue, mention it to them but you may struggle to get anything on warranty as they may class it as ware and tear and or clutch abuse.

I’ve not even tracked it yet 🥲 I drive it to and from work with the occasional day trip…

presumably if I could claim warranty will be up to how nice the dealer feels that day 🤣

Well you bought it second hand with 12k on the clock and we don’t know how the previous owner treated it. If they did a bunch of ‘launches’ the clutch will have taken a battering. I’ve never encountered a garage replacing a clutch under warranty as they are a wear and tear item. If they had only just fitted it then you may have a case but not after 19k miles.

You think? I mean, a clutch shouldn't be failing at 19k miles, especially on what is classed as a high-performance hatch.

I mean, technically speaking, buying from a dealer means they have to sell a car of satisfactory quality, and it must last a reasonable amount of time. Not sure if I would consider 7 months very reasonable...

(The only reason I know that is that my last car was full of never-ending problems to the point of contacting the ombudsman :( )

Yep, you can kill a clutch quite easily in just a few months. I’m not saying you did but the previous owner is another matter. Let‘s see what the dealership says but my experience suggests they are unlikely to offer you much.

I think given you've bought it used and havnt put those 12k miles on you might be granted a new clutch as they cant quite prove you've destroyed the clutch in your brief ownership. That said i do recall a few owners on FB (from new) who killed their clutch being denied under warranty

2nd hand car from dealer will perhaps get you 3 months warranty from the dealer on abnormal wear and tear.
Otherwise they will refer you to the factory warranty, and as said, clutches can get hammered by the driver, so unlikely they would cover it.

Well, been to the dealer. Believe the issue was down to some air in the clutch system, as the car runs on a hydraulic clutch.

They did not charge me and looked over whole car so safe to say im pretty impressed!

Unfortunately, the factory paint quality is really poor. I had the left side replaced under warranty, and the replacement brake caliper already had paint chips right out of the box... o_O
This was actually the one thing they couldn't do much about... I have a wheel refurb/caliper painting shop about 10 minutes away from where I live.

If it gets any worse, I think I will pay a visit, as it's beginning to annoy me 🤣
