Howdy fellas :)

My first post in this friendly forum, however in anticipation of "my" N I think I've read through most if not all existing freds already 😄

So what have I picked up a couple days ago:
  • New FL N Performance Hatchback in Phantom Black (10km)
  • "Fully equipped" = DCT, N Light Seats, Assist Package, Pano
  • Located in Northern Germany close to Hamburg

What's the story behind this car, why did I pick it?

As it turns out, I was without a car for almost 3 years now. Before that, I had an M240i. Yes that engine was a real killer but the rest of the car didn't quite cut it for me. Too perfect and smooth, idk. So now with starting a family (35 y. old), and current crazy gas and heating prices etc., we wanted to have 1 single car that can accomplish all of the following:
  • Daily commute / shopper / all season car incl. winter and often parking out in the open
  • Comfortable to use for my wife (automatic gearbox, rear camera etc.) while still being a sexy car - she had an Abarth before
  • Long Autobahn trips for holiday and family visits
  • Occasional Nordschleife Touristenfahrten 1-2 times per year
I was also considering something like an Audi S4 or so, but my wife prefers smaller cars and also tbh the price tag difference is just "wow". So after comparing many cars, we both came to the conclusion that the FL N Performance Hatchback is the perfect fit for us.

Now why Phantom Black? To be fully honest with you guys, I wanted a grey N. Either Micron Grey or Dark Knight. But, you all know how it is with availability of new or hardly used cars at the moment. And I really needed a car, since we just moved house. So, after couple weeks I saw the "perfect" N for a reasonable price and readily available for us to pick up. So the trade-off was either to go with this one "despite" it being black, or go with a grey N and sacrifice on the seats or the pano roof etc. And as we plan on keeping the car for 3-5 years, we went for the fully equipped one and as it turns out, black suits the car quite nicely :) it will get 19" black winter rims soon as well.

First impressions:
  • yeah baby. Compared to the M240i, this is an emotional car!
  • Even though we take the 1000km running-in-period very seriously, already feels great to drive and has ample power
  • The black painting by Hyundai is really not the best. Paint clouds all over the car and while de-batching, I gotta be honest, did manage to do some micro-scratches to the painting although I was really careful. Will be treated with a nice polishing soon and surely go away through this. But really gotta be careful with that Phantom Black
  • N Light Seats are super comfy and fit me very well even though I am nearly 190cm tall. Pano roof no issue at all!
  • Surprisingly lot of space in the car
  • Music sound system and interior quality is OK for us. Surely not premium but tbh I expected worse from reading all the forum freds so was actually positively surprised
  • I've not yet gotten used to the fact that you have to press the throttle pedal quite heavily to actually get the car rolling in first gear after a stop, e.g. traffic light; will take some time for me to adjust. Would prefer if already a gentle pedal press would be enough to get the car rolling.

What has been done / will be done to the car: obviously for our "multi purpose vehicle" 😁 and also due to cost reasons, I don't plan on making a real track tool out of this.

Mods:
  • Done: black Hyundai logo badges front and rear
  • Done: N side skirt stickers
  • Done: debadging "Hyundai" and "i30"
  • Done: wireless Carplay (Carlinkit)
  • Done: LED reverse lights (Link)
  • Done: black carbon "start engine" button (Link)
  • Done: red door lock covers (Link)
  • Done: black wheel bolt covers
  • Will be done: frameless plate holders
  • Will be done: black carbon key fob cover
  • Will be done: Eibach 15-20mm
  • Will be done: Rallyflapz mud flaps (probably "ShortieZ")
  • Might be done: black "N" logos front/rear
  • Might be done: carbon fiber interior parts (Faserschmiede)
  • Might be done: Stage1 software tuning (MTT?)
  • Might be done: More aggressive brake pads
  • Might be done: front spoiler lip with flaps
  • Might be done: oil cooler (still unsure)
  • Might be done: Wagner intercooler
Will keep you posted on the progress :) Some initial pics in next post 👍

Welcome to the forums from a fellow northern German and have fun with your car!
As a heads-up (dont know how close you look for a clean, scratch-free car) maybe look for some PPF for the front, otherwise the front might look like it has been sand-blasted after 2-3 years.

@Bu11eT thank you for the warm welcome :)

Yes that's a very good piece of advice mate! I was thinking - what is more cost-effective, to have a proper PPF done every ~2 years or have the front painted or professionally "aufbereitet" every 1-2 years. I would guess it will be roughly equal, which then would speak in favour of the PPF... Just in case you or anyone else can recommend a good and cost-effective car wrapping & detailing service around the Hamburg area, please drop me a PM and I'll pay them a visit and check them out 👍

regarding a professional car-wrapper I can recommend @KurvenKrieger's shop called 's Pickerl which is located in Kiel. They've already done lots of Ns.

I'd recommend a PPF btw. With painting the front you'd have to have a good painter as they need to color-match the front to the rest.

Time for a quick update:

Odometer sits at 450km, loved everyone of those kms so far :) though still some time to go till I can/will properly rev her.

One single mishap so far in the form of the navigation system behaving weirdly: pressing the setup/menu button had no effect even after complete restart of the car and also could not get to the home menu screen. However, one press on the "reset" button fixed it. Saw that my car was supplied with an outdated software version so am gonna install the most up to date software tomorrow.

Installed wireless Carplay/AA via the "Carlinkit 4.0" adapter (was around 140 EUR) and have to say it works brilliantly at least with my "N". I chose this adapter because it offers both Android Auto and Apple Carplay functionality (my wife has an Android phone). Installation was super simple: just plug into USB socket of the car, activate bluetooth on the phone and then connect via bluetooth to the Carlinkit adapter. Blasphemy: the adapter is named "Volkswagen xxxx" in the bluetooth menu 😅 ofc I don't yet have long-term experience but today it worked absolutely flawless. Fixed it with double-sided tape above the USB socket. Very quick automatic connection (~15 seconds after ignition or engine start), no hickups, stable connection, good music streaming, did not recognize any change in audio quality. Buttons on steering wheel still work. Auto-reconnected after I left the car for 2 hours and got in again. Very satisified so far, but lets see how it goes in the long-term.

Now onto some polishing over the weekend to get rid of these micro-scratches / factory-painting holograms at the rear.

THAT! I know so many people who drive a lot more expensive or powerful cars. Once I let them drive my N they cannot stop to grin. That car is so emotional. God damn its almost unbelievable :D

Btw black looks soooo damn cool on the car. Especially on the rear with the unpainted part.

Congrats on your nice car :)

Finally treated the car to a proper hand job today  also found a great detailer the other day in western Hamburg, who gave great advice and polished the rear end to get rid of the slight factory paint clouds - can highly recommend.

Some small updates, installed red door lock covers (upside down - each to its own...), LED reverse lights etc., no issues with the car so far, still careful with the throttle atm (just for peace of mind), very much enjoying the occassional n-custom burbles and other sounds the exhaust makes :p starting to like the black more and more - although I know it will be quite a pain to keep clean & tidy especially now during the colder (and saltier) months in Germany.

Some fresh pictures 🌶️

Used the wintery weather conditions in northern Germany (currently sunny with 20 degrees C 😅) to fit her winter shoes. These are Brock B40 rims in 19" with ET53 in satin black matte. They come with ABE. Certainly not the lightest of rims with 12,5 kg but then, I don't plan on tracking the car during winter tyre season. Black wheel bolt covers still to be fitted.

They'll certainly look even better with 15-20mm height reduction springs so am looking to fit these next, but will probably have to wait a few months. Fun fact: during wheel balancing, my dealer seriously used white balancing weights ("Wuchtgewichte") on these black rims. 🙄 Immediately exchanged them with black weights.
