Aircon not working

Hey all

Put the Aircon on the other day and no cold air.
Switch blue light goes off and on but there’s no sound of the compressor clutch engaging, which I’m presuming means it’s low on gas. (Or something’s broken or leaking)

Car is just over 3 years old and not used much. I do put the Aircon on most times I’m in the car just to keep the seals lubricated and system working.
Already booked it in to be investigated (having fuel pump recall done, so 2 birds with one stone)

Just wondered if this is an issue with the i20? Anyone else had issues with their Aircon?

I’ve heard that A/C systems can lose up to 10% of gas per year, but I’ve never had to regas in my life?
 
I suppose a 10yr old car is going to struggle with AC, but yours seems too young for that.

I recall someone going in for service or MOT, etc and being recommended to regas their AC, and I thought it was just another example of a service upsell, but perhaps its indicating that we need to share our experience more on this as a group.

I find that when I start my i20n with AC on I can hear some bubbling in the pipes behind the dash for the first few seconds, but it didn't concern me. Does anyone else hear that in their i20n? Perhaps the system hasn't been topped off properly somewhere from the factory and I should mention at the next service so that I don't get told it needs regassing in the next year or so.
 
I expect either you have a leak so no gas at all in the system or could be a high pressure sensor that has gone faulty. If the car isn't getting the correct signals from the sensor it basically locks the compressor off.
 
If it’s leaking then the usual symptom is that it doesn’t work very well, not that it doesn’t work at all. In other words, the air isn’t very cold even when set to the lowest temperature. For it not to be working at all suggests that it is something other than a leak.

I was told by the service centre that they recommended a re-gas and air-con service every three years. However, it is worth bearing in mind that the service department of a car dealership is, by far, the most profitable department.

I honestly thought it was the sales financing department, but service upsells and service shortcuts definitely make them a contender. It shouldnt be anywhere near the most profitable if they are [properly] doing only the work that needs doing.
 
Just to close this off, and as I suspected, it was low on gas. Had it regassed and it’s now working fine. They found no leaks. They did say regas recommended every 2 years! Wtf? One of my other cars is 15 years old and has never needed a regas.
I have never had to regas an Aircon system in my life before. Progress, eh. lol.

Also had the recall done on the fuel pump. No issues.

Physics would like to speak to the warranty department.

The only conclusions would be that either someone didnt do their job properly, or they have enshittified the AC build to use inferior hoses and seals, as the metal parts wont let gas out, so it has to be seeping through the most porous areas in small quantities.

hehe. I’m way ahead of you.😀

I said all that and they agreed to book it back in a months time to pressure test it foc and see what happens. If it’s losing gas, then it’s a warranty job for sure.
 
Another update - I don’t use the car much so haven’t needed the Aircon for ages (have it “on” pretty much every time I use the car, but not really aware of whether it’s actually ‘working’ as it’s normally on 20 degrees or so.)

Anyhow, recent boiling hot weather expecting ice cold air and, nope, it’s not working. Again.

Back to dealer, who says they put a dye in the system last time to make any tiny leaks evident if there was any.
Turns out it’s leaking very,very slowly and they’ve found it.
New compressor and seals being replaced under warranty in a couple of weeks.
