ABS unit replacement

Hi! I am having issues with my i30N (2017). Randomly getting fault codes on the dash (AEB,ABS,ESC etc) flashing, power steering off and RPM not working.... usually disappearing after a while.

I am thinking about changing the ABS unit, basically switching it with my friend from his i30N(2018) to see if the issue still persists (either he gets the faults and I don't so I know that I should buy and switch ABS) or I still have the issue and it is related to something else.

My question is, is the ABS unit somehow "coded" for the specific car (VIN number) and I need to code it before I put it in my car? Or is it just plug and play?

Why do you suspect the ABS unit for this?

Doesn't it mean I'd get "faulty wheel speed sensor" code? I get all sort of codes, but they're CAN-BUS related, but not this one...But I'll check them, good point.

the issue is that all of these codes can come for an unplausible signal the ABS or ESC units are receiving. This is not an uncommon error for the i30N, plenty of threads with similar error codes on this forum.

Usually the checklist (in order) would be:
1. disconnect the battery and leave the car without power over night
2. check wheel speed/wheel abs sensor signals (do NOT check for error codes, but check the actual speed signal reported by each sensor
3. check the cables coming from each wheel speed sensor
4. check the electronic throttle body, sometimes some units can get stuck.
5. check the ABS unit
6. check the E-LSD
7. check the Engine Control Unit and Body Control Unit

In order to check stuff a cheap DIY tester is not sufficient as those only report the problems from the engine control unit. You'll need a professional tester to read all control units in the car for error codes.
Whenever you delete an error code that is not in the Engine Control Unit, make sure to perform step #1 after the codes have been cleared, just to be sure.

I can also only say that it's better to read out the error first. I also had all kinds of errors in the display. Differential, ABS, ESP failed. Front and cross-traffic alert failed. Then even the server failed (recognizable by the red steering wheel in the display and the fact that the steering wheel is difficult to turn )... Well, and all this, as it turned out after the readout, was due to a defective wheel speed sensor.

I had the same 6 months ago. In my case I was lucky to have access to the original Hyundai diagnostic tool and checked all sorts of things. Definitely go through the points Bullet mentioned. It could be that it's one faulty wheel speed sensor, which is easy to fix. Maybe it's also worth checking the wiring on the sensors behind the middle rear view mirror. I was getting some errors with that as well.

However, in my case again, unfortunately it was the ABS motor.

Also, keep in mind that to change the ABS unit, it's a lot of work. We had to remove the downpipe and things like that to be able to access it.

J'ai eu le même problème il y a 6 mois. Dans mon cas, j'ai eu la chance d'avoir accès à l'outil de diagnostic Hyundai d'origine et j'ai vérifié toutes sortes de choses. Jetez un œil aux points mentionnés par Bullet. Il se peut qu'il s'agisse d'un capteur de vitesse de roue défectueux, ce qui est facile à réparer. Il vaut peut-être aussi la peine de vérifier le câblage des capteurs derrière le rétroviseur central. J'ai également eu quelques erreurs à ce sujet.

Cependant, dans mon cas encore, malheureusement, c'était le moteur ABS.

Il faut aussi savoir que pour changer l'unité ABS, il faut beaucoup de travail. Nous avons dû démonter le tuyau de descente et d'autres choses pour pouvoir y.

After checking everything else as Bullet described above, I got a GDS diagnostic tool and checked the ABS and LSD. I checked the individual valves in the ABS first and then the motor itself. Motor was dead.

I mean, a good mechanic would know exactly what to check. In my case, the message on the dashboard was saying to check the lsd. So I guess the dealer mechanic didn't bother to check anything else and straight away told me that my lsd needs replacing. Obviously I didn't want to pay 3k just because they told me to and I have some connections and managed to get my hands on the original diagnostic tool that Hyundai uses. They also helped me do the tests etc and figure out the exact problem.

Good morning. I come back from the Hyundai garage and to dismantle the abs unit and replace it he tells me that they have to take out the engine because there is not enough space. My i30 is a left-hand drive European version. Did you have the same version? If not, what was your solution? THANKS

Ummm what?! I would go to another mechanic. You only need to remove part of the exhaust system (down pipe etc).

I have the same version European LHD

In total I had the car at the mechanic for 4 days. The car was ready from day 2 however.

I also have the same issue. Ive been advised to change the wheel speed sensor and possibly the wiring harness. Would anyone have a oem part number for what I need. Its left rear. Thanks in advance
