i30 N Steering Noise / Creaking

I have just received my N a week ago the minute I drove out of the yard (22km on the clock) I noticed a creaking / grinding noise coming from the steering wheel and column.. I went back the next day to notify the dealer though they assured me it would go away and to come back at it's first service.

Last week i took my car in (450km) to get assessed. I was told that I require new strut mounts. For one I'm gob smacked how could this be an issue at 22km from delivery. Over the past week whilst I have had it home waiting for parts I can feel to me what seems like a steering rack issue it floats like a boat and jumps around uncontrollably.

Anyone else had the same issues?
Needs different grease in the bearings had mine done under warranty, seems to have cured it

Noticed a noise from mine when on full lock at a car park grinding and a vibration through the wheel like something rubbing

Picked mine up on Friday from the dealer, after having the rack out in pieces. It now drives flawlessly and there is absolutely no noise from the rack after re-greasing it with the correct spec grease (had to wait a week for it to arrive).

Glad you're all sorted, time to return to enjoying the car.

That could actually be “normal” it’s the tyres rolling on the rim due to the gymnastics the LSD goes through. Happens due to 235 35 19” rubber + front wheel drive + proper LSD + slow + tight turn. It’s not an N issue if only occurring then.

I did wonder if it might be LSD related but wasn't sure if it's normal or faulty fingers crossed it only does it then and isn't an issue

Mine was greased and was fine until it seized completely on the drive on Wednesday flagging as “Lane Keep Assist error”, replacement rack now in place.

Sorry to hear about that, must have been pretty annoying. What is the build date of your car if you don't mind me asking?

March 19. I know others with similar dates have had the same problem. Oddly after the greasing all seemed fine no noise or other issues until it went.

Same as me then, let's hope mine holds up. Thing is, there are MY20 cars with the same issue so I doubt a new rack will hold up any better? I wonder what caused it to seize up, did they share any technical info?

No other than confirming it was the steering rack itself that had gone rather than any issues with the sensors in the rack and saying because it had been greased before it was an immediate replacement.

Looks like I’ve joined the club. Hatch build date: June 19.

Had a creak (no thumps or bangs) since day 1, alerted the dealer. Sounded more like inside the cabin, but confirmed (?) as first service as “rack needs greasing” and we go from there. I’d specifically told them about the potential causes besides rack (heat shields / rubber grommet), but they say rack. No idea if the actually checked or just went with the TSB for rack greasing.

Probably ask another dealer to also confirm rack before going ahead.

<sigh>

On the upside, so far:

No headliner rattle
No dash rattle
Slick/positive gearbox in all gears, moving or stationary
No fogged headlights (even after pressure wash in the cold)
Panel fit is good
No media system reboots
Tank fills to full easily
No speaker reset to rear
Bloody fun to drive

If it's inside the cabin noise, just like mine, a squirt of silicon grease top and bottom sorted it. Just try it yourself, takes minutes.

Seems my May 19 build PDe.3 hatch has the problem. A slight creak from the steering when warm that started at about 150km. It's going in for the one month service next week so we'll see how they go. Couldn't be bothered greasing stuff myself.

Mine creaks on full lock and when driving on full lock feels like something is catching a bit like the tyres are slipping with a jolt in the car very odd
but seems to drive fine otherwise
Someone suggested it’s the LSD but I had an LSD on my last car and I don’t remember this
I wonder if it’s drive shaft related

That sounds more likely to be normal - diff as you say on full lock. Before mine was greased it creaked every time you moved the wheel even an inch, hot cold or stationary.

It's been mentioned several time on the forum, it is the lsd giving the driving over a stick feeling, worse in colder weather.
