Exhaust- / Sound Discussion

So barely no pops and bangs, only occurring once in 1st gear at 5k on up shift is normal for this car?

Interesting conversation. I think sometimes there might be too many bangs and pops.

My pespective is influenced by the fact that I live in a townhouse complex where an 18 year old kid drives a Ford Focus with a five cylinder Volvo motor, he has a hole in the exhaust and he revs the crap out of it. He is a tosser. His car pops and bangs as much as mine does in custom mode. That annoys me. Perhaps I’m just a grumpy 60 year.old.

However, the handling is what really matters and the N has it in spades.

I also agree with @simmo777 in that the ECU would protest is some manner at the actuator being disconnected. Might just be a warning light or maybe something more. I know what you are saying about the "use the last setting" feature that would be a good idea and could be done in software I would think. That said, I can push the Flag button twice to N custom mode without too much effort.:)
Yup, and it's not the case with me, but if you'd like to start the car in loud mode every time, it takes more effort than just the double tap on mode selector, you'd need to double tap the start/stop button without clutch to turn the system on, then go into N/N custom, and finally start the engine... That's some significant frustrating delay to taking off...

Here, here! Must be something to do with being nearly 60. 59 in my case.:)

FFS - to everyone who says there isnt a problem because their car is loud, please stop commenting. If you think yours is too loud, by all means, swap it with mine.

I was not suggesting your car didn't have a problem, just explaining the circumstances in which my car will or won't make noise.

@N-Raged sounds like a trip back to the dealer.

I think it’s probably a bit difficult to compare everyone’s experiences as they’re a bit relative to what you expected/had before. I might think it’s easy in my car, but it may not be dissimilar to yours.

Emma, I don't think that someone saying their N doesn't pop/crackle below 5k on full stink and someone else saying theirs does it all the time at anything over 3k without trying are subjective comparisons - they're pretty obviously different

I have aftermarket exhaust and there is no diffrence on what kind of mode my car is - it is poping and banging every single time I will release throttle peddal. It happens even on 1800rpm-s. Downpipe will make huge changes.

What was your exhaust sound like before the change? did it make a massive difference? or was your exhaust already loud and willing to talk?

@Albert Beer-man go to the dealer about it. A question was asked/statement made and people answered, trying to be helpful.

Expectations of it are subjective, and the comments were that it *does* pop and crackle just not the level that was expected or wanted. We also have different roads and driving styles. No need to be shirty at me, people asked a question with how their car pops and bangs and they answered. Because yours doesn’t do what you want isn’t my fault, go to Hyundai about it.

@N-Raged just in case you're doing it wrong (which is the case sometimes).

If you want to test it properly, go for a drive and let your engine warm up properly, water and oil temperature should be at ~90 C for both before you give her hell. Go somewhere where you won't disturb others, and park it. Put it in N mode, and put your foot down on the throttle. Not gradually, all at once and at about 5k rpm pull your foot away, again, aggressively. It should bang, almost every time you do that. Mine doesn't do that always as well, and not always at 4k, and this is normal.

At first when I got the car I thought that it is quieter and doesn't bang and so on, but you really need to be aggressive on the throttle. I can drive all day long changing gears at 5k rpm without a single bang if I drive smoothly pushing gradually the throttle etc..

The same concept goes not only for neutral when you're stationary but for all gears. My advice is not to redline first gear or even more than 4k, not healthy. If you are on full throttle for example in 3rd gear at 6k rpm, go off the throttle, that should go bang bang bang every time. Whatever gear you're in, when you downshift and it goes above 4.5k rpm it should bang, but like I said, sometimes mine doesn't as well, nor did the demo I drove months ago. I found too that at higher rpms the bangs can be louder or more. If it still won't.. then like others said, get it looked at.

Thats exactely my way to start the N. Getting in, Press 2x start button, fitting safety belt, press the N Button and then start. No delay for me and always a good sound :)

Yeah, I meant dealay as compared to someone starting in normal mode. Start engine, buckle up & go. That's why it would be nice if the drive mode was remembered after turning the car off.
I often drive in normal with rev matching on, obviously it's no biggie, but making a short stop for refueling and having to turn the rev matching on again after starting the car? It's a little thing that could be fixed easily, but that's how it is.

Is it therefore possible to disable the butterfly and leave it in the fully open position 24/7, effectively rendering the exhaust system on full time N mode regardless of whatever drive setting is selected?
If it throws errors when unplugged, you could remove the valve inside the exhaust, and leave the module plugged in to do its "job". Theoretically it won't throw any errors and the exhaust will be all the time open. At least if you're serious about it you could give it a try.

Thanks for the advice - I was thinking that would be the best approach. Not sure my mechanical aptitude will allow me to do this successfully, but I'll think about it. It still wont achieve the pops and crackles though (as per my prev posts, I think this relies on timing adjustments from the N mode (but happy to be corrected)). It would achieve the objective though of having the whole exhaust system open all the time.

Thanks again.

@_Emma Didnt say it was your fault, didnt think my post was 'shirty', and only made a factual statement. Sorry you felt otherwise.
