What car did you come from?

I’ve owned the following beauties;

Passed my test in 1999.

1987 Austin Metro. Rotten little thing from an old ladies fetid driveway but I loved it. I actually drove the wheels off it in the literal sense on a dual carriageway in Eastbourne, it’s spiritual home.

1982 Datsun Stanza. 1.6 litres and the longest throw of any gearbox ever. Felt fast to me. It was owned by no less than four members of my family at some point in its life. It had so many storage pockets my mate once hid a fresh scotch egg in one and it took me six months to find it.

1991 Fiesta 1.1. So rusty I was amazed it got me through my student years. Was capable of four wheel slides via Scandinavian flicks but at amazingly low speeds and only on very wet roundabouts. It died on the A27 outside Brighton, went up in flames the poor thing.

1996 Honda Accord 2.0. Thought I’d made it with this one. Engine felt huge, it even had a spoiler. My mates nicknamed it the Grandad Sport.

1998 Integra Type R DC2. Simply one of the best drivers cars ever made. I almost cried when I sold it for the next car but I just craved more power, the only thing the car was ever short on.

2003 350Z. Loved it although it did always feel like it might kill me one day. Sold it reluctantly to by my first house.

2008 BMW 123d. One of the first low and high pressure turbo Diesel engines. Had crazy torque from about 1500rpm which meant care was needed in the wet. Also the only car I’ve properly crashed. Wet slip road, traction control off after big sideways fun on previous wet roundabout. Squeezed the throttle as the rear end crossed the standing water, no amount of opposite lock was bringing her back from the trees. Turned out I was the third guy that week to have the same accident. AA guy thought that was hilarious. I didn’t. Car was only 9 days old and it took BMW 6 months to fix it.

2011 A6 Avant 2.0tdi. Boring family wagon required.

2013 S4 Avant. Exciting family wagon required.

2015 Golf GTE. Still own. Tax effiecnet company car, compromised as a performance car on account of the weight but does so many things brilliantly, an ideal car in many ways. I’ve done more than 1000 miles on one tank of fuel before in this car and still had some fun along the way.

2018 i30n. You know the score.

2018 XC90 T8 Plug in Hybrid. Due to arrive one day in the near future. 7 seats of pure understated Swedish luxury for a growing family. This will do the long trips (and the short pure electric ones) whilst I thrash around in the i30n during the week. It will also be the ying to the i30n running costs yang. Think I’ll take her to IKEA the day we get her for the semi ironic meatball action.

How does the i30N compare to the cars on that list?

Any jobs going doing what you do? Haha

Brilliantly. I use the i30n the most these days especially on my own. It’s just so entertaining to drive. I picked it after much research and disappointment with the other cars in the market. It’s a true drivers car
That is awesome.
I guess that is what Hyundai have really nailed, anyone can make a fast car, but the real engineering is in making a car that people want to drive over and over again.

Absolutely. It’s very, very entertaining but not compromised so you can carry real people, go shopping but empty the car and trundle down to the circuit or your favourite B road and it just does it. The fact it is toy laden too gives you a value experience you would only get in much more expensive cars. Apart from the higher rent materials it’s no less functional or less comfortable than my Macan which is more than double the price

I'm very jealous. This was my dream car for many years in my early driving days.

They are fantastic cars, 8200rpm vtec redline, incredibly light and so focused, it almost feels like it was made for you. It’s those old happy memories that instantly went through my mind when I drive the N. I can’t say enough good things about either of them.
