My i20N

The shifter looks almost identical to the airtec one,..
Indeed, the two are very similar. In fact I believe the Airtec is a copy of the Foresight design. The main difference between the two is that the Foresight has locking grub screws whilst the Airtec relies on the application of thread-lock. Also, I don’t know if the Airtec is machined or cast but the Foresight is definitely milled from billet aluminium.
 
Today, my mate Dave and I changed the front pivot bushings to the rear beam axle. Initially we thought his might be a relatively easy job as we managed to just drop the arms and get access to the existing bushes. However…. it turned out we didn’t have a heavy enough hammer to be able to remove the old bushes - at least, not with the axle still under the car. So we ended up disconnecting the shocks and removing the whole axle. With it propped on Dave’s garden wall we were able to give the bushes a more vigorous hammering and out they came. The new ones went in easily and, other than having to wrestle the axle back into place, putting everything back together went fine with no damage done. Oh, we took the opportunity to clean up the brake pads and pop some copper slip on the ends. Finally - as far as I can tell there is no impact at all on handling and/or comfort.
 
So each replacement bushing consists of three parts - two Polyflex style parts that push in from either end of the boss and a thick walled steel tube that runs through the middle.
in contrast the Hyundai parts is a single bush that must be pressed (hammered) out from the inside out. Construction is an outer sheath of hard plastic that is filled by a rubber compound and metal elements are embedded where the pivot is. The whole part is made as one and cannot be disassembled.

Nice. I suspected it would be a bit of a hassle getting those bushes out with the axle still under the car, especially if it wasn't up on a hoist where you can get a decent swing with a hammer.

Also, when I did mine, the car was only 5 months old. On an older car there's been more time for the bushing to bond to the boss which only makes removal require more force.

Even with having to remove the beam entirely, I still think it's a fairly easy, and fun, mod.

It would have been significantly quicker if we hadn’t spent so much time avoiding the removal of the axle and trying to get the bushings out whilst still on the car. The issue is the small lip to the plastic shell. In retrospect I think we could have done it without removing the axle but we needed a heavier hammer and a bit of tube to spread the load to the outside of the bush where the hard plastic sleeve is - we didn’t appreciate how the bushes were made until we had removed them (a bit late by then 🤣).

I received the Powerflex gear linkage bushings today - black series to match all my other Powerflex bushes. So, the next nice weather day I’ll be fitting those and also the short shift kit as it’s all the same job. With any luck I won’t have to remove my ITG air intake as it’s smaller than the stock air box and all the linkage parts are really under the battery rather than the air intake.

Will you change also the front suspension bushings? I think there is only one option from Whiteline, nothing from Powerflex right?

Well I’m certainly in no rush. As you say, Powerflex don’t make these bushes; the only ones left from them are those for the front sway bar and if I do the front sway bar I’m more likely to change the whole thing to the Whiteline one. To be honest, I don’t think the front and rear suspension bushes make much of a difference unless they are worn. At present I’m more tempted by KW coilovers.

Sorry mate, I have to stick my bib in. 😅

In my experience the Whiteline bushes have made a difference. A harder bushing has to result in a more rigid and responsive vehicle, but be more noticeable the more you push, other than perhaps roughness and vibration when driving "normally." Front bushes will be more so, due to their effects on steering feel and behaviour. In my case, with both wishbone bushes having been changed, turn in/change of direction responsiveness is better and the double offset I used give a bit more caster and have improved stability throughout cornering and under braking.

Whiteline offer both front-lower and rear-lower front wishbone bushes.
 
Fair enough - I am likely being a bit hasty in my dismissal as I only drove a couple of miles and that was largely in stop/start traffic, so I’ve hardly given them a fair chance.

I’ll have to read your thread again to see how tricky the front bushes are to fit.

I’ve removed the custom centre caps as they are gel badges and two of them have developed a weird discolouration, like a chemical attack, a hazing to the surface. Anyway, I rather like the technical look of the open centrelocks. I‘ve custom drawn up the OZ Racing decals as the commercial ones I’ve found haven’t been specific to 18” wheels. I’ve also done them in a matte vinyl that is a slightly more subdued red than many others.

Today I fitted the Foresight short-shift kit. Foresight have made a YouTube fitting guide and whilst this is helpful it’s not really necessary. In addition, the first third of the instructions describe the removal of the air intake but if you have an ITG intake, as I do, you can ignore this bit altogether as you can access all the screws for the battery tray without removing anything. What you do need to do is loosen the screws that hold the ECU bracket so that it can pivot out of the way enough to be able to access the rearmost screw anchoring the battery tray. You also need a box spanner as there is very little space around this screw. Other than this minor issue it’s all plain sailing and the part itself is really nicely made. Compared to the Airtec version it has copper headed grub screws to lock the main fastening screws. Now I started with the shift set to 40% reduction and that worked fine, but felt a bit strange as the side to side didn’t match the front to back - which is extremely short. In fact, at 40% it is the shortest shift I’ve ever encountered. Anyway, I’ve now set it to 20% throw reduction and that feels like a good balance - for now anyway.
The Foresight part cost me the same as the Airtec one and is certainly very nicely made - I recommend it 👍.

Oh, we didn’t change the gear bushes as we couldn’t figure out how to remove the old ones - so I’ll have to do a bit of homework on that one!
 
I’ve had a search and Powerflex give zero fitting instructions - but I did find this video on fitting them to the i30N and the parts are identical.


so that’s another job to do 🤣👍

1/ I’ve ordered a cheap bearing puller/pusher that should be able to push out the gear link bush and also push in the new one.
2/ The Greek Car Jackals boys have released some pictures of the forthcoming larger rear wing for the i20N and are also working on carbon fibre side skirts and a new bonnet. Now the bonnet strikes me as particularly heavy so replacing that would be a benefit.
