i20N - Reviews, General Discussion & Info

Review sponsored by Ford lol. Not as agressive? Those Spanish reviews showed how much more agressive the car is as a track tool compared to the Fist..

I think it's a pretty fair review overall. I've seen a fair few of his reviews and they are generally fair. He often focuses on hard plastics in many of his reviews, so it was inevitable he'd comment on them. The engine don't seem to move him, i reckon. Its 'response ' in the section where he's demonstrating the weird rev jump thing seems very iffy, and he's warranted to mention it. I've never tried that ST 1.5 ecoboost, but it doe seem to have the i20 N's lunch on that area. And he's also very complimentary on the ride quality, something which many a review are not. Funny though, hear the 'wack' of something about 17 something mins in when he goes over a pothole or similar.
I wouldn't say it's FORD biased. I think he loves the ST (going by his review) and maybe was not a 'overwhelmed' by the i20 N in comparison?

I appreciate the Ford is a very good car but from the reviews i've read the i20N is the more agressive sharper driving hot hatch which is what i'm after..

Hi
i have only done 600 km in my i20N but straight away I have noticed the revs increase when you come off the throttle, I recently read of a Hyundai out of control acceleration increase occurrence in 2011, which caused a number of traffic accidents.
Anybody have any thoughts on this anomaly in the i20N ?

Does it actually speed up a touch too, when it does this? Albeit briefly?

My Mrs used to have a POLO diesel which used to do it and I took it to have an MOT for her (I actually hadn't diriven it beofre that) and it did it and i said to the mechanic to take it off me as it's freaking me out lol. She also used to say it'd catch her off turning corners sometimes, too.

Hi
i haven’t driven it enough yet but I’m going to say it does speed up, you have to allow for this in traffic I should imagine in close proximity stuff

By the looks of youtube reviews, I only thought it was at the higher rev range though? If so, I guess that wouldn't mean close proximity stuff.

MInd you, sod all that in any instance. I'm not going from a free revving naturally aspirated drop-like-a fly engine to that. I've seen too many reviews now which mention the engine negatively for it not to be a taste thing.

i knew about it and I picked it up straight away and I’m only driving my first 1000 km slowly
its a strange sensation when you expect the revs to fall away as expected and they go in the opposite direction.
I’m a aircraft tech and and if I saw that response in flight controls travel or engine operation I would report it

I found another similar incident where yet another Hyundai Sonata Taxi suffered from the same acceleration issue in Korea. This time around, the car’s RPM’s shot up while in gear, and the driver wound up plowing into another car. It took the taxi almost mounting the car it hit, to settle, and actually stop moving. All the while you can hear the engine revving out of control. This only means the driver was able to put the car in neutral, so as to maintain some type of control.
this is the article I found on RPM surge 2012

What the car is doing is nothing to do with the reports you've found from over a decade ago - they were very obvious faults/malfunctions.

I've never noticed any unwanted increase in speed in the 700+ miles of driving mine when changing gear - do the rev's hang slightly? Yeah. But have I felt like i've needed to cover the brake pedal to compensate for it? Not once.

Maybe I just naturally ease out the clutch slowly enough to compensate at lower speeds?

This sounds like rev hang. It just doesn’t drop off for a second to too. It doesn’t run away or anything though

Does it have a purpose? Or is something your meant to be uncomfortable with when it occurs and you just live with it

It's Greta emission stuff. That's it's 'purpose'. Here's a bit of a description: https://uk.motor1.com/news/448317/vw-golf-manual-rev-hang/
Huge apologies though for even reading anything VW, let alone linking it.

Your last sentence is correct about living with it.
The last KIA Ceed GT version had it badly in the manual.

It’s just the way it is

That’s pretty bad mate, I’d hate my engine doing shit like that, I’d say take it back to the dealer but it’s tuned that way?? a proper remap would easily fix it, but it might be a while before one is available?

Yeh I don’t like engineering that has hidden traits.
my last car was my 20 year old 1999 sti 2 door coupe.
I owned it for 20 years, rpm went up and came down as required, no system run aways there
