i20N - Reviews, General Discussion & Info

I don't mind the slight turbo lag - I find it's a good way to keep yourself out of trouble! Plus, it's no less fun dropping from 5/6th @ 50mph to 3rd and very quickly finding yourself near triple figures... if it was any more responsive, we'd all be in the ditches and hedgerows 🤣

Lol! Is the Fiesta ST engine less laggy in reality do you know?

It’s not a big problem, more noticeable to me because I’m still running in and mostly avoiding flooring it.
When you do floor it the response is what you would expect…not great below 2000 revs, but acceptable over 2000,given there is ,obviously ,some turbo lag.
It‘s just that the Octavia has a sharper part throttle response than the i20N but ultimately the latter still performs OK.
If you look at all the reviews out there most say the Fiesta ST has a more “”responsive” engine, but the i20N in fact has similar acceleration times.
Anyway, without going into all the pros and cons I certainly would not want a Fiesta.
What’s ALS?

Fair enough, i just asked that question and it does sound the Fiesta is more responsive then. I'd heard the i20N has Anti-Lag System like i30N.

I've not driven an ST in a long time, but I do remember the pedal feeling like it had a bit more urgency to it. I think in most driving cases, the difference would be fairly negliable - and once on boost and going, the N will definitely offset any immediate advantage the Fiesta had.

If you're driving it mundanely and suddenly floor it without dropping a gear or 2, it's never going to pin you back in your seat, same with the Ford, but keep it on boost, use the rev matching and work the gears and I doubt you'll feel like you need more from it for 99% of roads/situations. 👍

It also depends on 1st and 2nd too. The NISMO RS torque don't kick in properly until ~ 3K revs, and it seems torque limited in 1st and 2nd. So at junctions/roundabouts etc, it don't feel as quick off the mark as 215hp would believe.
The MINI's torque is literally there at idle revs, and feels nippier off junctions and roundabouts as not only is the torque right there, but it don't feel so torque limited in the low gears, either. It's an easier car to drive in more situationsbecause of it, despite being 'slower'. There's literally zero lag.
The ND's an NA engine, so different altogether.

On boost can take building up in some cars though, given 1st and 2nd can also be limited with torque. On boost can mean you're hitting 30 in 3rd gear and the throttle/car feels up for it....but this is far removed from left wanting when one needs a quick junction pull out to find revving the nuts off it in 1st and 2nd kind of don't do so much due to torque limiters to protect the trans

Fiestas engine was made back in 2016 with far less restrictive EU regulations concerning emmisions. Hyundai i20n engine had to pass more strict regulations.
Furthermore european manufucturers have the advantage to "cheat" with emmisons, so as to pass their engines, while korean and japan users are not aloud to do it. *see VW group scandal etc). So the european engines, have more advance and fuel in their engines and less heavy flywheels which give them "character", but when you see the claimed and the real emmisions, you can discover the truth.
If hyundai put a less heavy flywheel, more fuel and more advance in their engines, the engine would have "character" and would be better than fords.
Last but not least, hyundai decreases boost above 6.000 rpms, to 0,8 bar from 1.0 so as to be able to give 5 yeas with unlimited miles quaranty, while ford keeps boost above 1 bar at higher revs and cant match hyundais reliability. If hyundai run 1.1 bar above 6000 rps then it would produce around 225 bhp and could smash ford everywhere.
if and when someone manages to hach i20ns ecu and knows what to do - reflash it, the engine could produce around 250 bhp easily with just a decent jorst and intake.

Decent comparison review of the stalwart vs the new kid on the block. No losers here...

Good review mate, there spot on with the Fords engine, it is a thing of wonder, no need for this boost shit, the torque is on tap whenever you need it, and the new facelift is taking it to 320nm, which is nuts considering how torquey it already is, give that a Revo stage 2 and it'll be a rocket, cant disagree with what they both chose in the end.. they have good taste;)

Fair play, literally every review I've read or watched raves about that ST MK8 engine

How do you find the brakes? They seem to be a bit negative about them?

Yeh mate I agree with them about the brakes, look they are totally fine for road use, ive never had a problem, but if you were going to whack a stage 2 on it or track yr car a lot then id definatly be investing in bigger brakes, I read somewhere Ford wanted bigger breaks but in testing they found it compromised the handling? How true that is ive got no idea?? but If it was true then I guess stopping is not a high priorty for them😂

Sorry mate but this is a ridiculous post, do you have any proof that European company’s are getting a free pass on emissions standards? If that’s the case then why did they throw the book at VW? Lots of European cars have been delayed in the last few yrs because they’re trying to comply with these standards, and Ford is an American company not Euro, so are Americans exempt as well? And if the Fiesta STs engine only passed because it was a few yrs ago, then why has the same engine in the new MK8.5 complied with these new standards? and it’s actually got more power than before as well, sorry I’m just not buying yr conspiracy theory? I seriously doubt Korean cars are being singled out..

His post really N-raged you 😂 sorry I had to

Same here. I believe the function is called 'car greeting' or something like that. Personally I found it gimmicky after 2 days but it took 30 seconds to disable in the settings. With my car in the drive way I walk past the car without entering it all the time on a normal day.

How did you disable the "feature"? can you still press the button on the handle to unlock the car or do you have to use the fob?
I find it annoying when i'm in the garage - i lock the car then when walking past it opens the wing mirrors again as though to stop me leaving

Shouldn't be long before Sprintbooster or DTUK release a plug in throttle pedal response adapter.
I fitted the SB one to a Clio RS200 and it made the car quicker to drive as the response was immediate (had 3 settings) - no extra power but felt like it had

You are too young or at least naive, if you think that vw dieselgate scandal, is the only emission scandal my friend.
Nobody fixed my VW in Greece, or gave me a refund, because in reality pollutes 10 times more than what vw supports. I dont think that any european citizen took a refund for this. But in usa, all customers got a refund, or they fixed their cars as to have emissions as vw had stated. The result was that vw cars lost a huge amount of power and torgue.
Do a search and see for yourself.
